I woke up at 4:50 only 5 minutes before the carriage guide started to wake everyone up. “Butterworth, Butterworth” he yelled out. I drew Jacinta’s curtains back as she was sitting on the other top bunk from me. She didn’t sleep very well and looked terrible. We managed to gather everything ready for the stop. We waited for the train to stop as was ready to make a quick exit. The train had been stoping letting off and picking up passengers all night so we were ready for the quick exit. As soon as the train stopped we jumped off in a hurry, I scanned our dark surroundings and realised all our effort were a waste of time anyway as the train was at the end of the line, Oh well better to be safe than ... read more

We ended up bumming around the whole day, we had a good look at the shops again and I tried to buy a Canon battery for my video camera which was an impossible task, everyone was out of stock and won’t have any for 1-2 weeks. We gave Glen’s unit a clean and made sure everything was packed and ready to go. It was so handy having the unit as it was a stone throw to everything and I knew it was probably our last bit of luxury we were going to have for some time. The view from the balcony was amazing and at night the view was incredible. Every afternoon a storm would roll in to cool things of a little and it was great seeing a heavy blanket of rain slowly draping over ... read more

Tody we hopped off at Pasar Seni train station and walked over to China town for breakfast. Jacinta had Chinese dumpling soup and I had wonton soup, it was a nice light meal to start the day at 10:00 in the morning. We walked through the rest on the China town markets, I ended up buying a pair of sun glasses for $15rm $5Aus, I somehow lost my new pair the day before. I also bought a wallet and a purse for Jacinta. The same bargaining applies to KL China town, you ask how much and then half it, you stick to that price and when they give up and say “no to cheap no profit” you walk away and more often than not they say “OK Mr OK”. Never be afraid to walk away from ... read more

We had to catch a bus from KL sentral to go to Genting, It cost us 38rm (ringits) for the bus trip, sky rail and a buffet dinner at the Coffee Terrace. We didn’t know what to expect from Genting because we were told that we have to go and have a look. It is situated up in the highlands and the temperature is cool. We were looking forward to the cool weather as it would be a big change from the humid heat of KL. Within 15min of the bus trip we started to climb and the forest started to turn into jungle. Within 30min we saw monkeys on the side of the road and within 50min we were at the base of the Skyrail. The bus pulled up, let us out and once again ... read more

We got up at 6:30 to start a big day. We caught the train into KL sentral station we were going to take a teksi but decided to save our money “and NO, it’s not a spelling mistake”! They spell words how they sound, and I think that is the best idea I’ve ever heard. I can’t stand the stupid English language. A quick train swap and we were off to the Petrona towers. They are twin towers that pretty much dominate the skyline where ever you are in KL. They both are 88 storeys high and stand 452m high, they are built out of steel and concrete and the external cladding is stainless steel and glass. Petrona is the main petrol company in Asia, and rivals BP, Shell and Mobil and judging from the size ... read more

The next day I ended up going with Glen to his new unit 10min walk away. He was getting a shower screen installed and slowly getting the kitchens, furniture and electrical installed. He is going to rent it out for $250/week Aus and The unit cost him $140KAus. There is no tax paid on the income which goes into a Malaysian bank account, and he will use that to live on when they come over on holidays. Not to mention that there will be property gains as well so if decides to sell he won’t pay tax on the capital gains either. The Belcher’s were all starting to pack and I think they shocked themselves on how much they bought for xmas. They were having trouble fitting everything in their luggage and went over on the ... read more

09The next morning we all decided to go to the Batu Caves. Glen was in charge of haggling for the taxis. They do not often want to use their meter in the cab because they don’t earn as much, so you have to find a taxi that will turn on their meter. We all piled into two cabs, we got in with Glen and showed us a few sights along the way. We turned up at the Batu Caves and gazed upon a huge gold statue of Shiva. Beside Shiva was 272 steep stairs straight up into the caves. The caves were huge. We walk into the other side and I spotted a lady that was carrying her hair on her back. It looked as if she had never ever cut her and she looked to ... read more

The phone rang at 7:00 for the wakeup call. It was hard to get out of bed and you really don’t realise how important it is to have a window in your room until you don’t have one. We quickly packed and threw on the cloths that I washed last night in the shower. They were still quiet damp but it had a cooling effect when you stepped out into the Singapore heat. We caught a taxi to Queen st and tried to find somewhere to eat. It was the first time we actually had to put our packs on and carry everything on our back. With a quick swing of the pack it was on my back and i was doing up the straps. At first the pack felt very comfortable and 20kg’s of weight ... read more

Our mission for the day was to get transport up to KL. Not knowing how to get tickets we were told to catch the train. The train station was on the way to China town so we thought we would catch the bus there and get something to eat. (Laksa). We ended up missing our stop so we had to walk back up to china town for 10mins. We hadn’t eaten anything because we got up at around 10:30 and by the time we got to china town it was 12:00. We had some really nice noodles that only costed $3:00 each. We walked the train station that took around 1/2hour. We managed to find the information booth and took a ticket. 15min late we asked how to get to KL? He said when, I said ... read more

Another good sleep in the morning and also a late start we really didn’t get moving until 10:00. Our mission today was to go to the Zoo. We started walking, not knowing really were we were going because we were outside the maps limit. We ended up walking for 45mins before we realised that we needed directions. We were going in the right direction but the tourist maps scale was out and we didn’t realise how far things were. We ended up catching the bus to the Woodlands area, we thought we might be able to walk or catch a short bus from there. A really nice old lady started to talk to us because we looked so lost. She was also a Catholic teacher and she started telling us were we should go and how ... read more
