We woke up at 7:00 ready to tackle the trek at 9:00, Too-soon said that we would have others join us on the trek so we would just wait for them to turn up. As we waited Poo-ma brought out his guitar and started to play. He had only been playing for two years and played quiet well. We sang along to the first and only English song he knew (Stand by me). He was reluctant to play anymore because he only knew Lao songs, we said that we would love to hear him play a Lao song and his face lit up and he played half a dozen songs for us. He liked us so much that he invited us to his brother’s wedding on the Sunday that we would be kayaking down the river. ... read more

We waited until the morning to pack for our three days cycling, trekking and kayaking including two nights home stay in a village. We quickly packed and squeezed in everything we need for the trip. We had to sacrifice allot of things just because we could fit them in the bags, we also checked out of our hotel and headed for the tour operator shop. We left our packs their reluctantly and hopped into the van and as we drove away I notice my knee was quiet sore and I realised that the scratch that I had on my knee from mud volley ball was infected and very red. We arrived 2km up the road and made a last attempt to find some bandaids. There was nothing around and with Jacinta’s brother in-law recently bumping his ... read more

We got up at 6:15 to witness the offering for the Monks, we knocked on Fabian and Arthur’s door but they had got word that it takes part at 5:30 and we would have missed it. The local hotel owner also said that we might just catch the end of the offering so with all the disappointment of possibly missing everything we took a risk and made a brisk walk 1km up the road in the misty dark road. We arrived expecting to have just missed the offering but when we checked around it hadn’t even started. So with no one actually knowing what time the event happens we just waited around as you so often do in Lao. Slowly the crowd grew and grew until the road was chocked with tourist vans and tuk tuks. ... read more

We all didn’t sleep very well and by the time we got going and had breakfast it was 12:00 and time to checkout and then check in to a cheaper hotel costing 80000kip. We all meet out the front of Annette and Marte’s guest house at 1:00. Fabien and Arthur stayed at our guest house only 30sec walk from the girls. With the lonely planet as our guide we all went walking tour around the town. We started off on Kingkitsarat rd walking north east and heading around the point Luang Prabang walking back South West along Khem Khong rd. It was an awesome sight to see the mighty Mekong river and it was only the dry season, I can only imagine how massive this river would get when in the wet season. Our group came ... read more

We woke up dehydrated with massive headaches and sever bruising and muscle tears everywhere. My back had one big bruise from shoulder to shoulder and Jacinta had bruising on top of bruises. Marte had a massive black bruise right across her bum and legs from jumping of the tower and we were all sore in our own little way. We meet up with everyone again and had to organise our trip up to Luang Prabang. Feeling bad that we haven’t seen Vang Vieang we all agreed to hire a tuk tuk driver for half a day to see the caves and lagoons, yep that's right there is more to do than just tube. It was great to see the real Lao as we drove through the limestone mountains. Our driver was Steve who spoke very good ... read more

We got up late again and agreed to all meet each other at 11:00 at the front off the hotel to tube down the river and by the time all six of us got sorted we were in a tuk tuk getting dropped off at the river. We left Dave and Nick behind because they were so sick from drinking all day and night they just couldn’t function. Jacinta, Arthur and I decided to walk up 500m to get a better tubing experience before hitting the first bar. Our goal was to have one drink at the bar and then tube down the rest of the river. We meet up at the first bar and all sat down feeling tired and lazy, it took awhile to work up the courage to have a beer and we ... read more

I'm starting a new blog called Where's Dan. The aim of the game is to find me in the photo. I will try to put a new photos one once a week from our two years travels around the world. My aim is to get as many people around the world to join my blog. Pass the word on and you may even come across Where's Dan walking down the street some day. One quick hint for finding me, I will always be wearing my Aussie Hat in the picture.... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng January 17th 2010

I woke up late feeling very dry and seedy, we didn’t emerge from our hotel until 11:00 and had breakfast at 12:00. We started to go for a walk around the town to get an idea of what’s around. It’s such a quieter town than what we are used to so far and with massive limestone mountains in the background it makes for a stunning view. It was clear right from the start that Lao was a special place and we immediately fell in love with it. We headed down to the river to have a look and bumped into the gang, within a split second we were getting board shorts and swimmers on to go tubing on the river. The cost of hiring the tubes are outrageous and with only one business with tubes they ... read more

We were picked up at 7:00 from the front of our guest house for our day tour, and after picking everyone else up we started to drive out of Bangkok and hopped to get away from the pollution. The pollution was more evident than ever when we gained some height from the city overpass. It hung like a thick blanket everywhere and the visibility was lucky to be 1km. We drove for around 1 ½ hours until we got to the war memorial where over 7000 men were buried from the second world war against the Japanese. We only stoped for an hour before we were back in our van flying down the highway. After ½ hour we stop at a war museum which is only 100m from the Bridge on the river Kwai. We paid ... read more
