The trip from Huey Xai to Luang Prabang by "slow boat" takes 2 days - compared to the speed and noise of the fishermen seen along the river, the expression seems preposterous: our modernized junk-boat carries from 80 to 120 people. Its shape long and slender, its single aisle, a wooden roof and open windows, rows and rows of what used to be car seats, an exposed truck engine roaring in the back, make the whole thing seem the weirdest trip on a plane from another dimension. In the morning of the second day, I get down to the boat at 7am. Although it is "scheduled" to leave at 9am, I know from yesterday's experience that getting a "bad seat" (a wooden planck so near the next row of wooden planks that you barely can squeeze ... read more

Sánúk The thai word SANUK means "fun" and everything worth doing - even work - should have an element of sanuk, otherwise it becomes drudgery. That does not mean Thais don't want to work, just that they approach tasks with a sense of playfulness. Nothing condemns an activity more than MAI SANUK - 'not fun'. (Thailand's Lonely Planet) Se esistesse una Lonely Planet di Perugia inserirebbe probabilmente la seguente voce sotto il titolo "Cultura Locale": The perugian word ...VIENAROMPICOJONI means "comes to break one's balls" and refers to anybody who comes in any sort of contact or communication with the person issuing the utterance. Everything in life - even work - has an element of ...VIENAROMPICOJONI, otherwise the person who does not recognize this in his or her verbal and nonverbal expressions is looked upon as ... read more

Back to the future (or ahead to the past?) Here's the last one, as I prepare myself for returning to civilization (should I put quotes or not?). In the last month I could not update the site as I struggled with some sort of bacteria which I contracted probably along the way, while eating something on the street or, more likely, drinking tap water....I guess this is how things happen, a small one-time concession, a slight exception to the rule of care turns into a BIG MISTAKE with loads of consequences. In my case, it was one night where I woke up in my guest house room at 3am with an incredible thirst. As I did not have bottled water, i decided not to use my super url=http://www.rei.com/pwr/product-reviews/Camping-Hiking/Filters-and-Purifiers/Portable-Water-Filters/MSR/p/695265-MSR-MiniWorks-EX-Filter.html water purifier (which saved me several times) and ... read more

I feel this one is deserved -- and it is also a good update on my last injury (the yoga one). Well, after more than two months, the injury is finally fixed (or, at least 98% of it), thanks to (and this is where the marketing comes in, should anyone find him or herself injured in India) Mr. Dhondup, of Tibetan Universal Massage, in DharamLhasa, the Buddha capital of India. Brush and direct, no-frills householder turned 'entrepreneur of health', working essentially alone while the wife sits in the nearby room, with a busy busy busy schedule and lots and lots of people queing to see him, Dhondup is no guru -- yes, he teaches tibetan massage (apparently his intensive ten days courses are good though he's of very few words) but clearly he's not necessarily looking ... read more

After being back from Nepal, I can finally state my feelings of uneasiness about what is supposedly "the best place to go if you want a rest from India". All along, I could not really figure out the reasons why I didn't really enjoy Nepal as I was supposed to, but now that I'm back in Hindustan, I think I have pinned it down. NEPALI SCENES (I): WHERE YOU CAN TELL WHO IS WHO Kathmandu is a beautiful city -- the scene alone of Durbar square at sunset is worth all the trouble to get there. One little detail is that Kathmandu, one of the only two flatlands of a country where 80% of the population leaves in mountainous areas, is incredibly polluted. Literally, half of the vehicles of the city are pieces of crap, scrappy ... read more

..while I carefully carry E.Coli along, like a good mother (f*** makes me think of Sigourney Weaver in Alien!), here are some anecdotes, collected here and there along my wanderings. THIS IS INDIA (I): 150 RUPIES FOR TO-DAY On entering the 18 miles of the Ganga National Park, the start of the trekking for the sources of Ganga, a kind but decisive Park officer asks for my documents and 150 rupies, the entry fee, and asks about the length of my stay. As I reply that I might come back the day after tomorrow, he immediately replies: "the entry fee is only for today, so please pay another 150 rupies". Quite baffled, I ask: "Why is it so?" and he answers "the fee is only for today, so please pay". Sadly, I resort to my wallet, ... read more

The karma of yoga What a better opportunity to update the blog than a forced stop due to the universal inevitable law of karma? The law, which I lately discovered, states: "In Yoga, whatever pose you take, once you make a mistake its consequences will show up (re-incarnate) in your next _ lives " and, indeed, this is what happened, when a few days ago while finally) practicing with success the in-famous Wheel pose (Chakra-sana) I heard a crack which was followed by a collapse of my body on the ground. Nothing serious, I thought, but when I woke up this morning (at 5am, as "this is India", and this time of the morning is particularly enjoyed by the locals for listening at full volume to the radio, shouting and screaming at the children, smashing pottery, ... read more

Perils of the extra step... Hello from Oooom land! This entry will be about the inconveniences of this enchanted land traversed by the Holy River Gange (as conveniently shown by the pictures I've uploaded), and above all, the inconveniences of going the extra step with one of the activities which are so diffused here, namely Yoga. As a matter of fact, I am still recovering from yesterday's accident -- after celebrating two days ago the birthday of a big Swami here with lots of chanting on a boat in the river (which left me already with quite some neck pain for the humidity and the sun), I decided to put renewed effort the following day. So, at 4.45 am I bravely got up, did one hour of meditation and chanting (while sitting in the awkward lotus ... read more

Namaste! I finally got my photos developed, printed, re-scanned, and posted. When I told the developer that I had Black and White film he looked at me as if I was from Mars (bobbing his head left and right, obviously). So this is the first set, with Delhi, new ones are coming from where I am now, in the bosom of mother Ganga, which flows down the Hymalaya and is incredibly strong, large and coooold. Except for the garbage, this is no Delhi. Oh, yes, and except for the Vikram, three wheeled collective taxis which fit 10-15 people at a time with their daring drivers and mechanics. The other day, I took one to go uphill for the third time to ask if my clothes were found by the laundry lady (apparently she lost part in ... read more
