I have just gone through the last of our photos from Las Vegas and found some of the foyer at The Venetian, hope you like them as much as we liked staying there. I have also included photos of Vicki's birthday card from me and some souvenirs, including Vicki's new Vegas Princess coffee cup. After a really nice light breakfast at our guesthouse we caught the "muni" to downtown San Francisco, the city bus network. Once again we were impressed with the efficiency and ease of use of the transport system in the states. There are so many lessons we could learn from the Americans including how to build roads and transport systems that simply work through to how to politely service customers and make them feel special. This morning we bid farewell to Las Vegas. We really enjoyed the stay at The Venetian, apart from the poor service at breakfast yesterday, the whole experience was just first class the whole way. The hotel is outstanding and amazing in every way. As I type the first part of this blog we are at McCarran International Airport at Las Vegas. It really is like a scene out of Total Recall, complete with a driverless tram to get you to your departure gates and the constant monotone security announcements. We arrive in San Francisco around 3:00pm local time and we are both looking forward to the experiences that await us. We are already booked for a sunset tour of the bay and Alcatraz on Thursday and on Friday the highlight of our trip will be our ... read more

After our first experience of ordinary service, by American standards (normal service by Australian standard), at breakfast this morning we hopped in the car and headed to the desert. We drove out to the Valley of Fire and then on to Lake Mead. A round trip of around 160kms and more photo opportunities than poker machines in Vegas, nah that's impossible. Once again the roads were first class, even the windy scenic drive through the desert where the roads people have very carefully laid the roads over the natural countours of the desert were smooth as silk and the interstates are just so easy to drive on. In The Valley of Fire State Park we stopped at The Beehives, Visitors Centre, White Domes and Elephant Rock taking around 130 photos. I have been through and tried ... read more

We caught up with the rest of our group, plus some extras, last night. The extras are Vicki's brother in-law Brian's family who live in Bakersfield near Chicago. Lovely people and it was really nice to meet them all. As a result we had 20 people for dinner last night. We had pre-dinner drinks at the Tropicana Hotel and ate at the Rainforest Cafe at the MGM Hotel and Casino. It is a rainforest themed eatery complete with live size elephants, gorillas, apes and snakes - really cool! Really nice food and yet again excellent service. Breakfast this morning was at the Grand LuxeCafe here at The Venetian. Without sounding like a broken record the food was amazing, I think the best breakfast I have ever had (eggs Benedict), and the service was also excellent. To ... read more

Sadly we left the Grand Hotel at Tusayan on the South rim of the Grand Canyon this morning. We enjoyed the hotel nearly as much as the canyon itself. I have included a few photos of the lodge type hotel the Grand Hotel is. On the way we saw Smokey the Bear and made our way for one last visit to the Desert View Lookout on the North East end of the South rim. We arrived pretty early to an almost empty carpark, in a lot that would comfortably park 300 cars, and took a series of photos in near perfect light and under crystal clear blue skies, While Sammy the Squirrel was picking at lightening speed! Temperatures still hovering at or just above zero. The drive from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas is stunning. ... read more

We have just come back from our sunset photo session of the Grand Canyon. The temperature remains where it has been, barely above zero, all day. The snow and rain has gone but it remains cloudy with occassional clear patches. All the photos in this blog entry were taken during the sunset, a fantastic time of day to be photographing. Enroute to the lookouts on the South Rim of the canyon we saw a large group of deer. And later on when we visited the Grand Canyon village we saw deer walking along the railway tracks and young ones grazing on the grass nearby. Tonight we had dinner at Sophie's Mexican Kitchen at the village of Tusayan just down the road from where we are staying. The food was amazing and the service was fast and ... read more

After a fantastic dinner at the hotel's restaurant we settled in for the night and a great nights sleep. It rained a fair bit of the night and at times heavy enough to wake us up. After a hearty buffet breakfast Vicki and I drove up to the visitors centre. the first thing we noticed was how bloody cold it is outside. It was barely above zero and drizzling with rain. While at the visitors centre we were greeted with a very excited announcement from the rangers "we are having the first snow of the season". As Vicki had never seen snow before we neaded outside for a walk back to the car and it was bucketing down snow. It was now time to find out what this Grand Canyon thing is all about. Wow! We had a very interesting and another fantastic day. If you saw my earlier post from LAX the problem I had at security was the passport carrier I wear around my neck wasn't removed prior to screening so I got frisked and had it searched. No big drama but a bit confronting at the time. Flight with Delta to Las Vegas was very smooth but much like a local route bus, but then again what do you need in a 40 minute flight? Bit of a queue at the Budget counter at Las Vegas but we were well looked after. We have been driving a brand new Hyundai Genesis, which is in our fleet as a luxury car. Leather upholstery and all the bells and whistles similar in size to a Statesman. We went to the ... read more

Sitting at Maccas at LAX as I type this on the IPad. Security here is extreme to say the least, I did expect it but gee whiz are we glad we got here in plenty of time. Check in with Delta was easy, very friendly and courteous staff - quite impressive. Our first experience of US rain this morning as we drove through a heavy shower in the cab to LAX. Another extremely friendly cabby, probably the best on our trip so far. A very fast talking Mexican guy who really cracked us up. All that at 6am just what we needed to start our day. Vicki is meeting an old school friend in Vegas when we get there then we have our first solo road trip. A 5 hour journey to the Grand Canyon, Nevada ... read more

Another fantastic day in sunny California. We are still adapting to US time, traffic and my sense of direction is upside down which is killing me. We are both awake between 3 and 5am, around 9-11pm at home, which is around the time we would normally go to bed. It then takes that time to get back to sleep. Other than that no real jet lag as such just some sleep deprivation from the flight over. Today we took the roofless double decker bus tour around LA/Hollywood/Santa Monica. For $40 you get to hop on/off as often as you like and commentary the whole way. We were able to get a shot of the Hollywood sign among our photos today. Vicki got to see Rodeo Drive, Melrose Avenue and Beverley Drive among the many famous streets ... read more
