Hey there, and thank you so much for all my birthday messages, internet is super expensive here (as is everything) so I prepared this blog from the comfort of my room and will email you all back as soon as we get to the mainland, or in fact to Indonesia, where we'll be next week... I am sitting on the balcony of a wooden chalet up in the trees, surrounded by large geckos, above a pristine white beach as the sun sets. I just saw a yacht sail by not too far away, and in the distance are the few hilly islands surrounding this one. We have the French windows open and bob is studying for his dive exam tomorrow so that after then, we can dive together freely and look at all the little fishes. ... read more

We've been in Chiang Mai for about a month now, and for some reason I've found it really hard to keep my blog. We've been staying in Liz’s beautiful house in the middle of loads of bamboo greenery, looking after her bonkers dog Molly. So it's been a lot like settling in for a while. Taking the dog for walks has weirdly made us feel like we are properly living here as the neighbours smile and wave, or pat Molly on the head. I've also become rather good on the old moped while Bob's been working on his project and we've done lots of nice touristy things like go to Doi Suthep, the Buddhist temple on the hill. We decided to go there by sangtheaw (a red van with 2 sets of seats in the back ... read more

looking down on Bangkok

We seemed to suddenly move on so quickly from Bangkok that I didn’t have time to post my last photos or write anything about them, but here's a few. We went up to the highest point in Bangkok, maybe in Thailand I'm not sure now, but they have an outside platform at the top which revolves in a slightly unnerving way. They also have a rather dated restaurant one floor down where you get a free drink but it doesn’t really feel all that posh sipping a cocktail while looking through dirty windows at the city below, while all around is the smell of stale smoke and dusty blue furniture...... read more

We left Auroville finally on Wednesday night. It was just too damn hot, even sitting still in the shade broke out a sweat. It was hotter than when I cycled down the Nile during an Egyptian heat wave for goodness sake, so when people asked 'are you sure you want to go to Thailand now, just as the monsoon's beginning?' we said yes, bring on the rain. Wow we're here in Bangkok. It's utterly a different world, and therefore so very, very exciting! We met up with Liz, a friend from university, who took us to an Irish bar and treated us to fish and chips and Guinness - wowwwweeeee what more could you ask for after Auroville? She found us rather entertaining as we were SO excited at being in Bangkok. Honestly, it feels like ... read more

A final farewell

We planned to be in Auroville for 2 weeks at the most, and have ended up being here for 2 1/2 months. It's such a crazy place of juxtapositions and contradictions, crazy loons and the most sane down to earth people I've ever met. It's really inspiring and really frustrating but whatever you need to face, will somehow present itself to you. We spent an intense month working with the Colours of Nature, to help them launch their brand new line of jeans - 100 percent eco friendly, hand dyed, hand loomed etc etc. I ended up doing a lot of writing, writing press releases and writing the entire blurb for the website. It was a great experience, working alongside Jesus and Ruby who run the company, Simar, Jigme and Sahil the designers and Anita who ... read more

Going where the wind blows

I just discovered I never published this for some reason so here it is now... We're starting to really get into this whole idea of coincidences and things cropping up just as you want them to. So many people in Auroville have told us to trust that things will happen if you really want them to. People say they ask the Divine for what they want and they get it, somehow, in some form. It sounds really ideal, and a little unlikely, but then this does seem to be happening here. Whenever we have doubts or questions or quandaries, within a day, we seem to find ourselves talking to someone who answers us, without us even mentioning it to them. The whole point of our trip around the world was to go where the wind blows, ... read more

Did that make you curious? I didnt know what else to call it but we spent all day at the biggest gathering of women in the world - it's in the Guiness book of records and everything! We read about it last week in the paper. Bob being a festival photographer was determined to go and I, being a woman, couldnt possibly miss out on something that sounded so crazy - 2 million women (as it turned out) would descend on the town of Trivandrum and cook offerings to a mythical deity. 2 million women! can you imagine? well neither could we so we decided to try and get the train down the day before. We thought it would be pretty packed but when we got to the platform it seemd rather fine. There were a ... read more

Okay, there's 4 months to go, but following on from a conversation I was having with Ellie before I left the UK, I cant help but wonder what on earth I'll get up to on my birthday. I dont even know what country I'll be in! But given that most people get to spend their 30th partying with their friends, and that that won't be entirely possible for me, has anyone got any other suggestions? I think I want to do something quite new to me, try something new maybe, trek somewhere special, or maybe just get drunk somewhere new! I dont know, but I'm tempted to take any suggestions you make - regardless of if I know you or not - and draw them out of a hat. But then if noone makes any suggestions, ... read more

We went to a festival yesterday which was full of elephants and really lovely, but before I talk about that, I just want to say congratulations to Sam & Alex, and Bruce & Steph, who have just had brand new babies within a week of each other (though the two couples dont know each other) and I'm really sad I cant be there to see Adam and Annie in person - I hope I get to see lots of photos soon! So anyway, the festival- we heard about it the night before when we were trying to find out about something else. Apparently it's the biggest festival in Varkala all year so we were told we really should get going to it. We bumped into a couple from Sheffield over breakfast and all headed off together ... read more

PHEEEWWWWWEEEEE, we were on a train for 49 hours!!!! and we covered a distance similar to that between helsinki and madrid, but do you know what? it was one of the best train journies of my life. Nothing much happened, but it was so relaxing I was really amazed. Bob and I started this trip not really knowing where we were going - we knew we were going somewhere, we knew we were heading for Indonesia at some point, but we were very much in need of going where the wind took us - and our trip so far has been exactly that. We planned to head to Goa (a mere 25 hour train journey) but when we were told that there were no normal tickets left for a month, we decided that rather than faff ... read more
