I left Bridgeport, Texas with everything going fine. As I pulled into Oklahoma City the motor home backfired and lost power, then it picked up again and off I went. I figured I had got some bad gas (petrol). I met up with Tony Neeves for a very pleasant afternoon in Guthrie, which is about thirty miles north of Oklahoma City. Tony retired recently and has just bought himself a BEAUTIFUL Mercedes, which I enjoyed seeing. We talked about the backfiring and decided that a tank full of premium gas might be just what the vehicle needed. So the next morning [View Full Entry]

I was born in 1947, so the first American President that I can recall is Dwight Eisenhower. I know that the British were very fond of him, but didn’t realize that he had developed life-long friendships with Winston Churchill and Field Marshall Montgomery. Eisenhower’s Museum is located in Abilene, Kansas; which is in the middle of nowhere; because he was raised here. He was actually born in Texas but spent his childhood and youth in Abilene, so I guess this was “home” for him. He was the third of six boys born to David and Ida Eisenhower. From what I understood [View Full Entry]

After a successful visit to Holiday World, the dealership where my motor home gets it’s annual maintenance or MOT as my mother would say; (Ministry of Transportation road test); I checked into Stephen F. Austin State Park in San Felipe, Texas for three nights. The park is about twelve miles from Bellville and was one of our favourites. Set in a very peaceful rural area, there is an abundance of deer and other critters, which although are still skittish meander around the campground. I took the opportunity of being so close to Bellville to visit with some very dear friends, doing [View Full Entry]

Living in Abita Springs, Louisiana The time has come to get back on the road but I really wanted to add a look at the area to my travel blog. I arrived back in Texas just after 1 p.m. today; it felt a bit empty, I have done the drive so many times—but with a big difference I was always coming home to Wally. I have stayed at the Abita Springs RV Resort for the past six months while I worked in the tax office of H&R Block in the small city of Covington, Louisiana, which is just six miles away. I spent the final two weeks of my marvelous 2007 Trek on the Gulf Coast. Camped in Styx River, Alabama I enjoyed sitting on a beach in both Alabama and Florida. This is a glorious area—if you enjoy a beach, which I do. The sands are the texture of sugar and are that pristine white. The communities that enjoy the asset of a beach also take great care to make sure they are clean and have all the facilities to encourage the influx of a tourist. Gulf Shores was hit by Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, fortunately they did not receive a [View Full Entry]

Back in April Debbie and Bev took me to Memphis for my 60th birthday. Wally was a big Elvis fan and the Graceland trip was one of our planned destinations. Our trip included him on our fun weekend. When I started to plan my trip from Hot Springs to Gulf Shores, Alabama I realized that Tupelo, Mississippi—Elvis’ birthplace, was just a short “jog” off my direct route. An opportunity not to be missed and because I travelled through Memphis on my way to Tupelo I am including some photos of Graceland along with the photos of Elvis’ first home. I [View Full Entry]

The past weekend I flew to Austin to visit with Bev. Debbie and Bobby’s Alma mater, Kansas State was playing an American football game against the University of Texas. We are all K-State fans and although Bev and I were sorry that Debbie and Bobby couldn’t join us, we were determined to have a good time anyway. Being a college town (as well as the Texas capital) Austin is a great town for young adults, they have a very active social life, lots of bars and places where young people can get together. There is also a lot of facilities for [View Full Entry]

Lots of pictures with this, please let me know if I over did it. My drive from Tulsa was uneventful. In Oklahoma some of the interstate highways are actually toll-roads, the income gives the State of Oklahoma the funds to ensure that the roads stay in good condition. My trip from Tulsa south was on one of the toll-ways, and thank-goodness, because I had been driving for about 20 minutes when I suddenly thought “oh, what did I do with my tea-pot.” There it sat on the counter, with at least one cup of tea left in it! Needless to say [View Full Entry]

My trip from Kansas City to Tulsa was pleasant. Quite a few of the fields lining the highway were flooded in the southern part of Missouri, I have been lucky to avoid some of the record rain fall that has been experienced in the American heartland. The TV station in Tulsa said that they are more than 11” ahead of normal rainfall with four months still to go. One of the draws to visit Tulsa was to visit our good friend, Tony. Wally first met Tony when he went to college in Stoke on Trent back in 1964. Tony had moved [View Full Entry]

I had a great week with Debbie, Bobby and family. We swam a lot and played a lot of games! Bev came through for the long weekend; it was of course great to see her too. Bobby’s folks came through on Saturday and we all enjoyed a shrimp and crab boil. Madisonville is located on the Tchefuncte River which feeds into Lake Pontchartrain; on Sunday we took the kids down to watch the boats and have an ice cream. I flew back to Kansas City on Wednesday. Kansas City really is a nice city. Just big enough to still feel friendly, [View Full Entry]
