Quite Lush Here
Quite Lush Here
Compared to what I would see a few miles on. This is the main road from southern California to Las Vegas so is a great four lane road all the way.
I left Bass Lake on a beautifully clear Sunday morning heading towards Pahrump, Nevada where I would rendezvous with some of my SOLO friends. (The SOLOs Group is a chapter of the Escapees Camping Club, we all travels alone due to one reason or another.) The first 50 of the 450 mile trip, was still up and down and amongst lots of trees. By now I was really ready for some wide open spaces and the sight of Interstate 5 was more than welcome. At Bakersfield I left the Interstate and took the road almost due east towards Barstow and the [View Full Entry]

Who doesn’t know a song about San Francisco that comes to mind? I’ve had Tony Bennett in my head for the past week. There is so much to do here but I decided to go into the famous city and take a cruise over to Alcatraz Island. My first attempt was on Wednesday---ugh! I didn’t want to drive into San Francisco because a driver never sees what a passenger does. I found out that San Francisco has a great transit system (BART—Bay Area Transport) so I went to the closest station. NO PARKING anywhere…..on to the next station, same story. I [View Full Entry]

The Delta is a very attractive area, scenes like these are around every corner. This was taken at the end of the driveway at Delta Shores
I had reservations at a park called Delta Shores, in Isleton, California, about 40 miles east of San Francisco as the bird flies. Actually, this is an island surrounded by waterways, so although it may look close by the time you have navigated around and over the water it is about 65 miles. It is certainly a very pretty area. I have a couple of trips planned for the week. Napa Valley. I am really not a wine drinker, nor do I know very much about wine but I did want to visit the California Wine Country and since Napa is [View Full Entry]

Northern California
Northern California
The desert of norther California was quite a change from the densly forested parts of Oregon and Washington
My trip from La Pine into northern California was really pleasant. The landscape changed from densely forested area of southern Oregon into the high deserts of northern California. I went past a large stand of trees without a single leaf, I tried to take photos but none came out good enough to post here. I breathed a sigh of relief when I joined Interstate 5, but even though I was now on a four lane divided highway the road was very curvy and hilly; too much to use my cruise control! I was staying in Red Bluff which is just south [View Full Entry]

Pumice Desert
Pumice Desert
Up to 50' of ash from the eruption, still very little vegitation
We had read an article about Crater Lake in one of our RV magazines about 8 years ago and had decided definitely to put it on our “bucket list.” Thursday was my day to add to my bucket. I am staying in La Pine which is at + 4000’ elevation. I don’t know what I was expecting, certainly not what I found. The land around the park is very flat so the first thing I saw when I got in was the Pumice Desert. Then I started to climb until my ears started to “pop.” There was a scenic overlook pull [View Full Entry]

My trip from Ocean Shores to Newport South Beach, Oregon was quite pleasant, although the mist started to roll in as I approached the coast and by the time I had got set up it was quite cool. The next morning was the same so I put on my wind suit and went for a walk on the beach, which is just 150 yards away and was lovely. After a shower I drove into Newport and stopped at the Chamber of Commerce for area information as well as the proverbial “where is Wal-Mart?” Incidentally, local folks frequently apologize that their Wal-Mart [View Full Entry]

I had such a beautiful day for the cruise
Debbie and Bobby had to evacuate to get out of Hurricane Gustav’s path, so they went to Atlanta for four days. I had planned to go to Grandparents Bingo with Jacob, Ellie and Ben the following week (September 7th.) Thankfully despite that they didn’t have power they went back home on Wednesday and got their power back on Thursday. So my trip was ON. I was leaving Seattle at 7 AM Sunday so thought I might as well make a day of it on Saturday and left Ocean Shores early. I drove around to the eastern shore of the peninsula and [View Full Entry]

Welcome
Welcome
To Ocean Shores
My parking space in Ocean Shores RV Resort is just great, there are dense spruce forests all over this area, so the sites are cut into the forest; I can’t even see my neighbors although they are only about 40’ away. I spent Friday catching up with some of the things I had neglected over the past three weeks—including my blog! On Saturday I ventured out. It’s a half mile walk to the beach from where I am parked but the town is about 2½ miles and I needed a couple of grocery items so I drove in via the Ocean [View Full Entry]

The Travelblog website has limited the number of photos that a person can include with one blog so I decided to do a separate blog dedicated to Vancouver Island and specifically Victoria. We had such a lovely day there. The weather forecast was not great for Vancouver so we dressed for a windy crossing of the Straits of Georgia over to Vancouver Island. We departed from Tsawwassen, which is named after one of the Indian Bands. Our crossing was breezy but not uncomfortably so and the skies were clearing the closer we got to Swartz Bay which is about 30 miles [View Full Entry]

The Pacific National Exhibition is an annual event in Vancouver. Lots of rides for the kids as well as exhibits for the older folks to browse.
Al and I really saw the sights of Vancouver and area. The first day we went to the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) which is very similar to the Austin County Fair only on a bigger scale. Beverley flew in for the weekend on Thursday so we went to Seattle to pick her up. It was a good chance for me to see where I would be driving when I eventually leave Canada to go to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Needless to say no matter how long a stay -- a game of golf had to be arranged. The next [View Full Entry]
