We left Hervey Bay, first calling in to the Seafood Festival being held along the harbour front. There was a crowd of people, mostly sampling the seafood of all types, buying raffle tickets to win more seafood, trips, etc, listening to the music, or viewing the boats, and fishing gear on show - it was all there. We didn't stay long as we had some kilometres to do. We had decided to have a few days at Bargara, on the coast from Bundaberg. It's quite an interesting coast in that it mostly consists of black scoria rocks with a few small sandy beaches between the rocks. Around Bargara there are quite a few holiday homes and units .. it's no doubt a popular spot in summer. In fact, it was popular in winter too as the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay August 12th 2011

From Byron Bay, we had a night on the Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise and then three nights at Tewantin. We caught up on all the Noosa things, Eumundi markets, the beach, the shops, and some nice time with Kenda and John. Now we are at Hervey Bay and today was magic. We were picked up after lunch and driven by bus to the boat to take us out to search for whales. We were taken about an hour out of the bay when we were told lunch was ready so we joined the queue to the food. I noticed that the lady about three in front of me seemed familiar .. it was schoolfriend and bridesmaid, Betty, doing the whalewatch tour with her Probus Club. What a surprise for us both. We spent the rest ... read more

We have had a great couple of days here at Byron Bay. Yesterday we did our usual stop at our favourite little town of Bangalow before driving here and setting up. It was such a lovely day, we spent most of our time in the sun watching the waves and .. a whale not too far out breaching and coming quite a way out of the water. We walked around the shops and had another 'sit and gaze to sea' time .. this time on the verandah of the Byron Bay Hotel, once owned by Paul Hogan's sidekick, Strop .. just the place to enjoy a g&t and soak up the atmosphere. Today was fabulous. We were up and out of the caravan park early and headed to the Arts and Industrial Estate, to the end ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Woolgoolga August 1st 2011

We are back at Woolgoolga at our favourite beachside site .. unfortunately, though, for just one night, tomorrow we must move to a site further back. It is very nice sitting watching the waves and walking the beach. We spent our first night at Tuncurry, at a caravan park we haven't stayed at before but one we will stay at again. It was right on the water, where the river runs to the ocean, which meant a nice walk along the riverfront to start the day. Around Taree and Kempsey there is evidence of the heavy rain and local flooding they've had recently - quite boggy paddocks and full brown creeks. Once we reached Kempsey, we took the back road .. now quite bumpy due to the trucks from the roadworks for the new highway and ... read more

It was a cold morning but sunny as we packed up and left Forbes, first stopping in town to buy a few staples of food in Woollies. It was another pretty drive to Parkes, known for it's giant telescope and the annual Elvis Festival where Elvises from far and wide are spotted around town, swivelling hips and being all shook up. On to Orange where we found a sunny spot to park and have lunch, saw a shop with underwear on sale so took advantage of that, and then left Orange for Bathurst. Orange and Bathurst had both had snow during the week but thankfully there was none left on the ground. We did get out and have a walk around but spent a lot of the time inside shops because of the cold wind. The ... read more

As we drove from Griffith, the huge paddocks continued as far as the eye could see - under cultivation and ready for wheat planting. Each town had the inevitable big silo and the spilt grain on the road brings all manner of birds - flocks of galahs, corellas, and rosellas that take to the air in a colourful cloud as we drive towards them. Small hills appeared, changing the flat landscape we’d had for a few days. We had lunch at Narrandera by the river, then decided to turn off the highway to have a look at Ariah Park - the sign ‘town of Bowsers, Wowsers and Pepper Trees’ had us intrigued. The main street was indeed lined with pepper trees and there were quite a few old petrol bowsers dotted along the footpaths. I suppose ... read more

I have had a lot of trouble with blogs lately. Rather than put as my latest, this entry was put at the very beginning of my blog entries. I deleted it from there, and tried to send it again, but wasn't able to do so. I'll try again for those who tell me they missed seeing it and apologies for those who've already seen it. After our second night in Castlemaine, we drove to the city of Maryborough. For a city of under 8,000 people, it has some grand buildings, and the grandest of all is their railway station .. it's huge! And there's a tale of how it came about ... To quote the Station Antiques site 'Alfred Outtrim (local Councillor) while on a visit to Melbourne called in to see the Minister of Rail ... read more

We had a drive around Junee before leaving next morning, driving up to look at the old homestead of Monte Crisco, a large two-storeyed building with many sheds surrounding it. A lot of the land has been sold off, there are quite a few new streets and homes around it now. Our next stop was an interesting town called Coolamon, with old shops and wide main street. There was an old grocery store at the top of the street, built 1906, and with the original long counters, shelves and trolley rails for the money to be carried to the office up above. Nowadays, it's used as a hall by the locals - there were a couple of men unpacking antiques for an upcoming auction. We were in pretty countryside until Narrandera, (on the Murrumbidge River) but ... read more

We left home yesterday morning and drove over the Blue Mountains. It was lovely up there, the air clear and crisp, the day sunny, the trees in their autumn colours of russet and golds. We drove around Cliff Drive where there were wonderful views over the 'spectacular blue-hazed beauty, dramatic cliffs and deep canyons' of the mountains. We drove on to Bathurst and then through lovely countryside to Orange. Thought it doesn't grow oranges, Orange does grow a lot of stone fruit as well as apples and pears. We spent the night at a park nr. the Showground. Bathurst has their agricultural show this weekend and Orange the weekend after, but, as is our way, we are missing them both! Today was another lovely sunny day driving through beautiful countryside, mostly large grey-green gums edging paddocks ... read more

On leaving Tamworth, we decided we'd once more head for the coast and turned off the New England Highway onto the Oxley Highway and over the Great Dividing Range. There were many big hills to climb up and travel down. We discovered the Apsley Falls .. well, originally they were discovered by that intrepid explorer, John Oxley, but we hadn't known they existed till we followed a sign to them. The main fall drops 65 metres down a steep slate-edge gorge and then down several more hundred metres to the bottom of the gorge. The hills got steeper .. we were travelling down to Mt. Seaview where Jason had been to a school camp many years ago. I don't think the camp is there anymore, perhaps taken over and the name changed. We drove into Wauchope ... read more
