My last day in New York City. What to do? Eat, of course! I have a later flight, so I have plenty of time to visit two places I've wanted to go since I arrived. First off, a bakery in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn called 'Baked.' I saw the owners on Martha Stewart and have wanted to go ever since. They have such an interesting menu, great website, and now it is finally time to see the space! I took the subway as far as I could, but it doesn't go into Red Hook, a former industrial neighborhood by the river that is an up and coming arts district. I walked from the subway so I could see more of the neighborhood, and I liked it. Baked is close to the water and very ... read more

My blisters were feeling much better today thanks to my Tevas. They're not pretty, but they sure are good walking shoes. MoMA was going to be my first stop today. MoMa is the Museum of Modern Art on W 53rd Street. It is one of the few museums open on a Monday and the entrance fee is about $12 I think. It was included in my NY Pass, which I was trying to my money's worth out of in the three days I had to use it. I ate breakfast at a place called Lindy's on 7th Ave and I don't recommend it. This was my one food mistake in NYC. Overpriced, unfriendly service, and my bagel with bacon and tomato was not even mediocre, but it cost $8.50! I knew when I sat down it ... read more

Not really an early start today. I had booked a Food on Foot Tour that started at 11:15AM from Penn Station. I went a bit early so I could walk around that area. There is a huge post office across the street (see previous entry for photo) and lots of shopping and restaurants and a Borders that is going out of business, as they all are, but I didn't buy anything because I didn't want to carry it. My tour met inside Penn Station and there was one other 'single' so we were paired together and everyone was told to share, otherwise we wouldn't have room to taste everything. Food on Foot was started by Cory who lost his job three years ago. He is the CEO, the tour guide, the scheduler, the secretary, the janitor, ... read more

Woke up bright and early today feeling like I had a lot to see and do! I went to breakfast at a place near Park Ave and 42nd Street. It is a landmark NY restaurant called Pershing I think, but I didn't know that at the time. It was pretty pricey, but good. I walked over to 5th Ave and headed north. My first stop was the Metropolitan Museum of Art which is just inside Central Park on 5th Ave. I walked a long way with Central Park to my left and then there it was in all its glory. The Met. I walked in and looked for the ticket window. Didn't see it. I had my NY Pass all ready to activate, and then I just walked in. No ticket. No nothing. What? Could this ... read more

Well, finally!!!! I made it to New York City after five years of finally having money to travel. When I booked my flight to come home to Kentucky, I had a 22 hour layover in NYC so I extended it to four days knowing that 22 hours is a just a teaser and four days is at least a small bite. And a bit it was! I have a new favorite city in the world and it is fondly referred to as The Big Apple. I arrived on a Friday afternoon and took a taxi to my home for four days in Brooklyn. When I was looking for accommodation, I discovered a website which will forever change the way I travel. It is called www.airbnb.com and this is where people all over the world list their ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Eastern Anatolia » Kars » Ani July 13th 2011

The bus ride to Kars wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but I didn't drink anything and didn't use the bathroom the entire 10 hours. I don't hate the bus ride nearly as much as I hate the bathroom stops. The woman next to me was quite large too, but I slept almost the whole time. I was feeling pretty sluggish by the time we got to the Kars Otogar (bus station). I got my bag and a taxi driver approached. I got a good vibe from him, so I agreed to let him take me to the hotel and come back two hours later to take me to Ani. Altogether he cost me 120TL and I wouldn't have saved much if I had waited to go with the service from the ... read more

After visiting Sumela Monastery, we drove back to Trabzon and it was early afternoon so we decided to use the car to see Aya Sophia before returning it. On the map, it looked like Aya Sophia was further away than it really was. It is actually in the city, just 3km from the city center. It sits on a hill overlooking the sea and is pretty easy to spot. We found free parking close by, totally by accident, and walked up the hill. We had to walk around to the back to get in (3TL). Aya Sophia was built between 1238-1263 and its original name, Hagia Sophia, means Church of Divine Wisdom. This church-turned-mosque is well-preserved and has beautiful frescoes and a mosaic on the floor that was once stunning, but has clearly had pieces removed. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Black Sea » Uzungöl July 9th 2011

Had a traditional Turkish breakfast, of course. at the teacher apartment. The guy who runs the place wrote his complete name, email, phone, and address on a map and gave it to Megan. Then I guess he thought maybe he hurt my feelings and as an afterthought, did the same for me. I left mine in the room and eventually, Megan's ended up in the trash. So after a long breakfast, we headed to Uzungöl, which means 'long lake.' This quaint little village on a small lake gets its fair share of tourist buses, but it has not yet been completely negatively influenced by tourists. It is still quaint, even though it has a lot of pretty good size hotels, and the local eateries are still local. There aren't too many shops and the shops that ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Black Sea » Rize July 7th 2011

My new friend Megan and I decided to visit a small part of the Black Sea area of Turkey this summer, and I am really glad I did. I am leaving Turkey in two weeks and after living here for a year, I realized I hadn't done any traveling within Turkey, and that is a shame. So we took an evening flight to Trabzon, rented an economical Fiat for three days, and drove the 70km or so to Rize. We stayed in an öğretmen evi, or teacher house. These apartment-like hotels are all over Turkey and are for teachers to stay in when they travel, and some even live there while teaching. Megan had a teacher card, so I could stay as her guest. These apartments are inexpensive and convenient, and a great idea!!! When we ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz » Marrakech February 27th 2011

We had a lot of sightseeing to pack in today, so we got up fairly early and had breakfast on the terrace. We were overtaken by honeybees! We sat by the roses and when they brought out the orange marmalade, the bees just kept coming! Finally we got up and moved and left them happily slurping away in the marmalade. We survived breakfast without getting stung and decided our first stop would be the Bahia Palace (10 MAD). It took Morocco's top artisans 14 years to build starting in 1860 and later on it was further embellished. Many of the ceilings have inlaid wood. Much of the palace is closed, but at 10 MAD it is worth a visit and is pretty impressive. We went the wrong way in the beginning because there were quite a ... read more
