Asia » Nepal » Bhaktapur » Durbar Square March 25th 2013

After a fairly interesting bus ride to Bhaktapur (1100 NRs), we got off the bus less than a block from one of the entrances to the old city. Dru walked with me around the old city, pointing out the significant sights, temples, landmarks and telling me about each one, but not in too much detail. I really appreciated that. I had been here last year, but didn't get an actual tour, so it was great to come back and get more information. There are over 1000 temples in Bhaktapur. This time it was much more lively than it was before. Lots of shops were open, several tourists were roaming around but nothing was crowded. I'd like to say I remember all of what Dru told me about Bhaktapur, but I don't. It is a great place ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Nagarkot March 24th 2013

I was relieved to find out yesterday that we would not have to leave too early this morning. Rabi's brother-in-law, Dru, came to my hotel at 10:00 and we took a car to Changu Narayan to start our walk to Nagarkot. Changu is also a World Heritage Site (100NRs) and the brochure says it is 'The most ancient pilgrimage site of Kathmandu Valley.' Dru is a tour guide, so he knows about the temples and sites in the cities, but I told him he didn't have to tell me everything. Hindu is such a complex religion, and I've been to many Hindu temples, so I knew I would just go into overload if he told me too much. He was totally fine with that, so he gve me enough information to keep me interested and I ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel March 22nd 2013

I left Kuwait at 10:00 AM for a much needed holiday outside of the Arab world, and was glad to be heading to Nepal for the second time. I went at this time last year with a friend, but this time she couldn't join me, so I am on my own, which is fine with me. Like most of Asia, you're never really alone when you're there. I made it to Kathmandu around 8:00PM and actually got through the visa line in about 5 minutes! I knew what to expect, so I rushed off the plane, rushed to get my entry form, and rushed to the front of the foreigner's line. I thought I could pay in rupees, but I couldn't, so I had to actually go exchange rupees back to US dollars. But the guys ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Izmir January 11th 2013

I went to Izmir to visit my friend, Megan and since she was going to be working all week, I decided to take a cooking class! But more about that later. I used to live in Selçuk, near Izmir, but I didn't see all there was to see, so Megan and I decided to visit the ruins at Bergama, about 100km north of Izmir. The Acropolis at Bergama is yet another example of extraordinary Roman ruins in Turkey, although I was a little surprised that it was 20TL, which is the same price as Ephesus, yet it is definitely not on the same level. What made this day great was spending it with my friend and two of her friends who I enjoyed getting to know. I have a lot of pictures of the Acropolis at ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul » Sultanahmet January 8th 2013

I must admit that on this trip, probably my 6th or 7th to Istanbul, I didn't wander far from Sultanahmet. I stayed three days and there were a few sites I wanted to see in Sultanahmet, and a friend I wanted to visit, but mostly I just wanted to wander the streets a bit and relax and have some good food and drink. I accomplished all of this and then some. This trip to Turkey was bittersweet for me. There are many things I love about Turkey, and many things I don't. But after my experience of living in Selçuk for one year, in a relationship that was bad and ended badly, I wasn't sure I would ever want to come back. I have been to Turkey twice now since I moved from Selçuk, and both ... read more

Middle East » Kuwait » Salmiya January 5th 2013

This is my fourth year in Kuwait. I teach at a private university here. I'm here for the money, I won't lie. But I do have a very good job that I like and there are some cool things to see here. If you live here. There is absolutely no reason to come here as a tourist, although I did meet some rather naive backpackers last year who thought there was. They looked like fish out of water walking around in 40 degree heat with huge backpacks on the Gulf Road. I bet they got more stares than a blond woman in a ankle length skirt and modest t-shirt. I took some pictures over the last few days and though I would share them. I'll add more when I have more. Pictures tell just as good ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Kyrenia June 23rd 2012

When I left Lorraine and Roxanne, I got on a bus headed for Lefkosia where I would cross over to The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. I was very curious to see what it was like and how it differed from the Greek side. I will start by saying I preferred the Turkish side! I only stayed three days on my own, but it was so lovely and I had many chances to use my very limited Turkish. I stayed at a beautiful hotel called The Ship Inn for 30 pounds a night. This was also a British package tour kind of place, but it wasn't really noticeable. My room was beautiful and clean with AC and a balcony overlooking the pool. It was easy to catch the dolmus (mini bus) into Kyrenia to see the ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Paphos » Aphrodite Hills June 17th 2012

I am just going to write two blog entries about my trip to Cyprus. This one is about my week in Paphos with my lovely friend, Lorraine, and her lovely daughter, Roxanne. We actually didn't do a whole lot in Paphos, so I won't bore you with a day-to-day account. Paphos was not exactly what I expected. I think I expected it to be more like Greece. It looked sort of like Greece on the coast, but the architecture was just modern buildings and shops and Starbucks and McDonald's. There were no white, domed roofs or blue doors. There were loads of resorts housing loads of British tourists and restaurants catered heavily to the Brits. Nothing wrong with that I guess since so many Brits vacation there and own homes there, but I was a little ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel April 6th 2012

We were supposed to fly back to Kathmandu around 9:20AM. Rather than hang out at Hotel Yeti, we decided we would skip breakfast and go to the airport around 8:00AM which was early. In Nepal, 45 minutes is enough time to arrive before a domestic flight. When we checked in, they said our flight would be delayed 30 minutes. No problem. At 1:00PM, we were still in the Pokhara airport. Our frustration was visible, especially Megan's. This was her last day in Nepal. I at least had all day tomorrow. Our flight had a mechanical problem. No one bothered to update us. No information was provided. No announcements were made. This is the way in Nepal. So we waited. Our flight finally arrived around 1:30 and we made the short 45 min flight to Kathmandu. Nabin ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Pokhara April 5th 2012

Was supposed to sleep in till 7AM today and of course, I couldn't. I hate that. I was up by 6:15. Nabin came to get us at 7:00 and we went to take pictures of Annapurna South from the other end of Ghandruk where the view was amazing. I have never seen a mountain like this one. I have never seen anything like the Himalayas, and I've seen a fair number of mountains! We were taking pictures next to a hotel and there were two young girls who lived in the hotel with their family. They must own it. I got some great pictures of the little girls. After we took pictures we stopped at the Old Ghandruk Museum (75NPR) which is small, but has quite a collection of artifacts. There are two museums in Ghandruk, ... read more
