Today I was in no rush to go anywhere. I spent two hours getting a Khmer steam and a papaya body wrap in the spa at Palm Village. It was interesting, but in the end, I decided it was just too messy for me. The steam was really cool though. I sat in the floor on a cushion and the girls built a sort-of wall around me with two woven mats. There was a clay pot in front of me and it wasn't very big, but when they opened it, steam came rolling out! They covered me with a huge towel and I sat there for about 10 minutes. The steam smelled like tea and lemon, and I think it actually was. If anyone had told me that pot could create that much steam, I would ... read more

This morning I needed a taxi to the airport at 5:15. I had arranged it the night before with Me Mates Place, or at least I tried to. The guy who was working really wanted me to take a tuk tuk, but I preferred a taxi. Apparently this is an unusual request and I was doubtful that I would actually have a taxi this morning. I was right. It didn't come, and neither did a tuk tuk, and it was raining. I was so pissed off. Anyway, the guys who were sleeping in the lobby (they work there, but this is very common that people sleep in the lobbies of hostels I think) ran down the street and found a tuk tuk. I don't think they understood why I was so angry, and I wasn't angry ... read more

I had a four day weekend in April because of Good Friday and Qing Ming Festival, so I decided to go to Cambodia. There were a couple of things I really wanted to see there, and while the flight wasn't cheap from Shanghai (550 USD) I knew it would be cheap once I arrived. I flew down on 1 April after work and got there kind of late. I was staying in a shared dorm at Me Mates Place for about 10 USD a night. They had emailed and said they would pick me up at the airport, but after my experience in Vietnam, where two hotels said they would meet me at the airport/train station, but didn't, I was skeptical. Sure enough, when I arrived at almost midnight, I didn't see anyone holding a sign ... read more

So you may be wondering why I stayed in Hong Kong after Enis left. I had an appointment to get a stress test done this morning. My heart is fine, but I already knew that. That's enough about that. It was noon, so what do I do with the rest of my day? I don't leave until 3:30 tomorrow. Well, first I went to, you know. Pacific Coffee Company. Then I decided to visit Kowloon Park which is a beautiful park on Nathan Road. It has a sculpture garden, a maze, and beautiful scenery. But it's not very big so I didn't kill much time there. I did a bit of shopping and got something to eat and called it a night. I went back to my room to read the 615 page Mao biography I'd ... read more

I thought today would be a sad day. Enis has been visiting me in China for the last 2 1/2 months and he left tonight to go back to work in Turkey. I thought we were both sad. We didn't have anything planned for today, so of course, we went to the Pacific Coffee Company first and had a nice breakfast/lunch, then we just walked around Kowloon along the water, did a bit of shopping, had dinner at Outback Steakhouse, and just enjoyed our last day together. I thought. He got on the airport bus at 9:00 that night. He didn't even say one word to me before he got on the bus. He had no cash on him, so he just took money from me for the bus fare to the airport and didn't even ... read more

We met Pearl for dim sum at 10:00 AM in front of our hotel and walked around the corner to a dim sum restaurant on the 6th floor of a building that I don't think I would recognize again. We ordered lots of different things - egg tarts (very traditional in HK), steamed custard buns (yummy and filled with sweet egg custard), beef balls, beef spring rolls, veggie dumplings and seafood dumplings and other stuff I can't remember the name of. I have to be honest. After the egg tarts and steamed buns, dim sum went seriously downhill. I liked some of the other things, especially the dumplings, but some of the things we ordered Enis and I were not too keen on, but we ate them because of Pearl. We didn't want to disappoint her ... read more

I was really excited about today. Enis and I were having afternoon tea at the Peninsula Hotel. We woke up late, went to Pacific Coffee Company for coffee before tea, then we went to the Peninsula Hotel right at 2:00 and only had to wait about five minutes before we were seated for afternoon tea in the lobby. I believe it costs 368 HKD for two people, and it is totally worth it. No sport shorts or flip flops allowed. The hotel itself is a stunning piece of architecture and it is one of the few hotels I saw in HK that wasn't ugly on the outside. I thought this building was beautiful inside and out. Afternoon tea consisted of two truly bottomless pots of tea (you can also have coffee) and the best scones I've ... read more

Hong Kong Day II - Victoria Peak here we come! We actually got up early and I forget now where we had breakfast, but I think we ate at Pacific Coffee Company. This place is great and we ended up going here every day. Their coffee is so good (I recommend the caramel latte!) and even the food is good. They have lovely pastries, and it is about the same price as Starbucks, maybe cheaper, but so much better. After breakfast we took the metro across the river and walked to the Peak without the use of a map since the signs are so good. We wanted to take the tram, of course, so we followed the signs for Peak Tram. To ride the tram costs about 36 HKD each round trip, unless you want to ... read more

Most people make Hong Kong one of their first destinations after moving to China. Somehow, it ended up being one of my last. There were a few things I really wanted to see in Hong Kong, and I was really glad I got the chance to see them with Enis the Kurdish carpet dealer, at first. Once I realized how expensive Hong Kong is, and that I was expected, as usual, to pay for everything, my enthusiasm withered somewhat. We got up early and after figuring out we needed to be at the brand new Terminal 2 of Hong Qiao Airport instead of Terminal 1, we were finally on our flight and on our way. Terminal 2, by the way, is nowhere near Terminal 1. Don't be fooled into thinking you can walk. They may as ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Temple of Heaven February 18th 2010

We were in no rush today. Our train was leaving at 9:30 tonight and we only had one thing left to see - the Temple of Heaven. We slept in a bit, had breakfast at our hotel again, and then took the metro to the Temple. Beijing is handy that way. Nearly ever major tourist attraction has a metro stop named after it. It was crowded. Surprise, surprise. The Temple of Heaven is not an active temple. It is a museum now. A huge museum that is larger than the Forbidden City if you include the gardens. The actual buildings are not quite as impressive though, but it is well worth a visit for only 35 RMB each. The gardens are beautiful and so is the architecture. The Temple of Heaven was originally built in the ... read more
