Yesterday morning, after a swim with the sharks off Wayalailai, I again boarded the Yasawa Flyer and travelled further north through the Yasawa Islands. I’m now staying on the island of Nacula at Oarsman’s Bay Lodge. It’s now my second day here and I’ve got three more nights here ahead of me. It’s pretty quiet at Oarsman’s. Not too many other people. And generally, there’s not much to do. But that’s okay. I am here for the beach! I’d read and heard a lot about the beach here, that it is one of the best in Fiji. I’ve been to many beautiful beaches in my years working on the cruise ships so I was eager to see just how good the beach here is. It is pretty awesome. I can see what the hype is all ... read more

Swimming with Sharks . . .

This morning, after breakfast, the backpackers resort where I’m staying offered an outer reef snorkeling trip to see the reef sharks. I eagerly signed up - it was one of the things I most wanted to do on Wayalailai (the island I’m on now). A group of 8 of us piled into a small motorboat and headed out to sea. It was about a 20 minute ride out to the reef. We jumped into the water and swam alongside the reef. I still can’t get over how clear the water is in Fiji. The visibility is incredible. I swam along the reef taking in the coral and fish and various critters. Then I spotted the first shark! It was headed in the same direction as us, but traveling more quickly. We reached a sort of opening ... read more

This morning I boarded the Yasawa Flyer - a passenger catamaran that transports people around Fiji’s Yasawa Islands. I’ve purchased their two week pass that allows me unlimited travel between the islands they cover as well as my accommodations. I had about a two hour ride before we reached the first island I’m staying at. Wayalaiai or “Little Waya” is south in the island chain, between the islands of Kuata and Waya (or the “big” Waya). A large volcanic rock named Vatuvula stands at the top of the island, towering over the backpackers resort and beach where I’m staying. It is an impressive sight up above you all the time. After checking in and exploring the property, I lounged in a hammock on the beach, reading until lunchtime. After lunch I took a stroll along the ... read more

This morning I packed my bags and left Taveuni. Before I left, I spent time just standing on the hillside at the end of Makaira’s property, overlooking the ocean with a 180-degree view up and down the coastline. Then the staff sang me a farewell song. Lucy hung a floral lei around my neck. I went off to the airport, waited for my plane to arrive, then boarded onto another small domestic flight. There were only 8 passengers this time! As we took off, I said goodbye to Taveuni. The flight back to Nadi was just as incredible. This time I had the opposite view of my flight there. Taveuni could be seen out my window for the first 20 minutes or so, until a cloud rolled across and covered the view. After an hour and ... read more

Today is my last day in Taveuni. Last night, when I was trying to figure out what to do with today, I felt torn. I thought I should be “doing” something with my last day, but at the same time I’m pretty worn out and didn’t feel like a big trip and also didn’t want to spend too much more money here (these 5 nights in Taveuni are costing me almost as much as the next 2 weeks will). I flipped through my guide book and my accommodation’s binder of things to do. Eventually I settled on going on a tour of a black pearl farm. The spot to meet the boat is only about a 3 minute drive from where I’m staying, the tour is less than 2 hours and it’s inexpensive but I’d see ... read more

On the Rainbow Reef . . .

Taveuni is world-renowned for its reefs. The Rainbow Reef is particularly one of the most stunning so it was high on my list of must-dos while in Taveuni. I decided to go out snorkeling on the reef. I’m certified to dive, but I’m out of practice and I’m a very nervous diver and many of Taveuni’s dives are drift dives; all of it had me increasingly anxious about going out diving. But I knew I’d regret not going out to the reef. Snorkeling seemed like a good middle option and I was thrilled yesterday when I called one of the island’s dive operators that a snorkel trip was going out today. I was taken partway down the island’s West Coast to a water jetty to meet the dive boat. We had two instructors, then an Australian ... read more

Today I ventured down the other end of the road, along Taveuni’s East Coast. Paul, who drove me yesterday, drove again and Pela, who I’d met yesterday, came along. Both of them are from villages along the East Coast and Pela has worked as a guide there, so I had the perfect hosts to show me the way. We headed to the far end of the road to Lavena. The road only goes about halfway down East side of the island - after that there are too many rocks and streams and waterfalls in the way so a road has never been built. While the road on the Western side of the island is paved, on the Eastern side it is not. Although it’s only about a 20 kilometre drive, it takes just over an hour ... read more

The day before I arrived, the area right in front of Makaira (where I’m staying on Taveuni) was designated a Marine Sanctuary. Roberta, one of the owners of Makaira, and some other local people had been pushing for this for awhile. She is thrilled that it has been approved. She spends a lot of time on the reef right in front of her property. This last March, a big hurricane hit Taveuni - I’ve been hearing a lot from people here about what the island was like before the hurricane hit. I think it’s beautiful here, so I can only imagine what things were like before the damages happened. The reef took a big hit. Roberta and some of the guys who work for her, frequently go out onto the reef to do some coral gardening ... read more

It’s my first full day in Taveuni and I’m eager to see this island I’ve been dreaming about! Today, being Sunday, is generally a quiet day in Fiji. Most shops are closed, some tour companies don’t run. Many people head to church. The Catholic church on the island is in the village of Waikiri. I’d read and been told that even though the service would be in Fijian so I’d have no idea what was being said, it would be a great experience to go - the singing is incredible. So I went to church this morning. Many of Makaira’s staff (where I’m staying) are Catholic but don’t often get the chance to go to Waikiri for services because of the time and expense. So since I was already going to be paying for a van ... read more

Flying over Fiji to Taveuni . . .

Today I finally made it to the island I’ve been dreaming of for years - Taveuni. This morning I packed my bags, said some goodbyes and checked out of the Beach House. I caught the express bus on the main road, right in front of the resort, and took it back to Nadi to the airport. I had a bit of time to kill, so I browsed the few shops, had lunch in a café and read a bit. Then it was time to board my flight. The flight was with Fiji’s domestic airline. Being a domestic flight, I knew it wouldn’t be very big . . . but I had no idea just how small the plane was going to be! There were only 13 of us on the flight - and even if it ... read more
