I am a big fan of the television series LOST. I watched the first season when it debuted on TV, but then started travelling and haven’t really been able to follow it on the air. Working on ships creates a great opportunity to watch TV shows on DVD however, so I’ve watched the subsequent seasons that way. Important note: I am NOT watching the current final season on TV, so please don’t tell me anything!! So what’s all this to do with travel? LOST films around Oahu which is where we are currently in port. A couple girls that I work with were interested in seeing where LOST and various movies had been filmed on the island. We found ourselves a tour and today was the day for it. We spent this morning exploring on our ... read more

The ship is docked in Honolulu, Oahu today. Myself and a couple girls had planned to go to Pearl Harbor, then in the late afternoon do a tour of some film locations. You can’t make reservations at Pearl Harbor to see the USS Arizona Memorial; it’s just first come first serve tickets. We’d heard that the wait time at Pearl Harbor could be long, so we rented a car to enable us to get around the island more quickly. As soon as we were able to get off the ship, we were out and off to the rental car company. We got our car and headed to Pearl Harbor. I dropped the girls at the gate to not waste time with parking. We did everything possible. We arrived there by 9:30am. The tickets we were given ... read more

Before arriving in Hawaii, I’d asked a lot of friends who’d gone before what were the not-miss things to do. Everyone I spoke to said I had to see the sunrise at Haleakala Volcano in Maui. Yesterday, I did the drive along the Road to Hana followed by an evening at a Luau. After the Luau and some visiting, we returned to the ship to nap. I tried tricking my body into thinking I was going to bed for the night, rather than just 2 ½ hours. Not sure how well that worked, but at 3:15am, the alarm went off and me and my roomie (Emina) were getting up and ready to go. By 4am, six of us were packed into the van and heading off towards Haleakala National Park. The drive from the ship took ... read more

One of the obvious recommendations I’d been given for my time in Hawaii was to go to a Luau. During our 2 weeks in Hawaii, we have 4 overnights. However I’m working during the evenings for 3 of the 4. Seeing as the Luaus happen in the evenings, tonight was the night for my Luau. Like with everything else I’m doing in Hawaii, I did a lot of reading about where was the best place to go. My pick for the Luau - The Old Lahaina Luau in the South Shore town of Lahaina. Earlier today, I’d driven a group of crew on the Road to Hana. Late this afternoon, we returned to the cruise pier to drop off people who had to get to work and pick up our little group who was Luau-bound. Then ... read more

Today’s Hawaiian adventure was set in Maui. A car (well, van) load of us set off to explore the Road to Hana. Again, I was the driver. The Road to Hana is 42 miles long and is literally carved into the North-Eastern side of the island. Friends who had been to Maui before recommended this trip and I’d read a lot about it. The Road to Hana has been called the Road to Heaven. The drive was meant to be both beautiful and challenging - 50 one lane bridges, cliffs crashing down to the sea, countless hairpin turns - we were up for it! I’d managed to borrow a copy of an audio guide for the Road to Hana. It was quite good - you timed it with different spots and mile markers and it provided ... read more

Today we are docked at Hawaii’s island, Kauai. Of all of the Hawaiian ports we’ll be visiting in our time, this is the one I was most excited about. Kauai is Hawaii’s Garden Isle. When I did my research on the island, I read about lush jungles, green mountains, deep valleys, flowing waterfalls and stunning coastlines. It sounded like a mystical and majestic place and I couldn’t wait to explore it. The guidebook I read said that the not miss thing to do in Kauai is to drive along it’s North Shore. It said that especially the Na Pali Coast is gorgeous, but you can only truly see it by boat, helicopter or multi-day hikes. A multi-day hike obviously doesn’t work with a cruise schedule. I tried to find a boat tour to go along the ... read more

Six days ago, we left San Diego and sailed south to Ensenada Mexico. In Ensenada we embarked passengers and headed out into the Pacific. We’ve spent five days at sea, going halfway across that massive body of water. Today, I am in Hawaii!!! Even after spending today outside in port, I still can’t quite believe that I’m here. Of the Carnival ships, only one (the Spirit) goes to Hawaii. Even then, the Spirit only does 4 Hawaiian cruises in a year. It’s a pretty big deal to be a crew member on this ship - especially in a position where there is only one on each ship. For the last six-plus months of this contract, I feared something happening to change the plans for me to be on the ship for the Hawaii cruises. But now ... read more

The combination of working spring break and being sick has had me stuck on the ship this week. I’ve pretty much just been sleeping or working. Today however, I made it a priority to get off the ship. Otherwise, it will be another nine days before I’ll be on land again - next cruise we’re off to Hawaii! So, after a good sleep in, I got off the ship. We’re docked in La Paz, but the pier is actually quite a distance away from town. Thankfully, free shuttles operate from the pier. I took the one that went to the beach. Compared to the Caribbean beaches I’ve gotten used to seeing, the ones of the West Coast we’ve been going to have been rather underwhelming. Today’s beach was really nice though. The sand was quite rocky ... read more

Spring break is in full force on the ship. This means I have hundreds of teenagers onboard to entertain yet somehow control enough to please everybody else on the ship. The first day of this cruise also marked the 6-month point of my contract. I am tired. I am worn out. And it all caught up with me this week. I woke up the first day of my final busy cruise, sick. The next day, a day at sea, I was worse. I went to the infirmary hoping they would give me something to make me feel better. I ended up signed off work to rest. The next day we were in Cabo San Lucas. I’d never been to Cabo and had heard it’s supposed to be great so I was really looking forward to it. ... read more

Today we were in Manzanillo. It is our final time in this port and our final time visiting what has been our regular ports. Starting next cruise, we’ll have different itineraries for the next couple of months. For our day out, I went with a few friends to a resort. They’d gone last week (when I was working) and really enjoyed it. I quickly saw why. It’s unfortunate we discovered it so late - I would have come more often had I known of it earlier! There was no fee to go to the hotel. We purchased our food and drinks - and it was really good food and drinks. There was wireless internet. I was able to sit in their lobby for a bit and take care of a few things I needed to catch ... read more
