It’s been five weeks since I got home from Fiji and other than the weekend in Memphis, they’ve all been spent at home (well, around Southern Ontario – which is home!). It’s been so great to be home because there have been some exciting things happening . . . starting with – Alexis and Kevin got married!! And it was a surprise wedding!! I was “in” on the surprise. They actually told me in early August, when I was still at camp. Because otherwise I wouldn’t have been in the country! I’d planned to go to Fiji and New Zealand but I couldn’t miss my sister’s wedding so plans changed. They were married on 10/10/10 – one week after I got back from Fiji. I spent that week staying at their house playing wedding assistant running ... read more

It’s been a couple weeks since I returned from Fiji and there has been a lot happening – but I’m going to save that for another blog. I have a few more weeks at home too before I return to work on the ships – again more in another blog. But this last weekend, I took a mini trip into the southern states for a wedding! I met Logan the first time I worked on the Destiny. We lived across the hall from each other and were really good friends. We were reunited a year later on the Glory and at that time he had just started seeing Cristina. They did another contract together and Cristina has since moved from Romania to Arkansas. They invited me to their wedding at their home in Arkansas and I ... read more

Today is my last day in Fiji. I haven’t done much with it. Yesterday’s Seaspray tour was my big farewell treat. Today I just lounged in my bed until I had to check out of the dorm. I spent the afternoon reading, sorting and editing photos on my computer and just taking time to reflect. Coming to Fiji has been at the top of my travel list for years. I’ve “planned” on making the trip here multiple times only to make other life choices or have things come up and get in the way. I began to fear that seeing Fiji was going to become the thing always said I’d do and never did. But I did it. I have such a great sense of satisfaction the entire time I’ve been here, just knowing that I’m ... read more

It’s my final full day and night in Fiji and what a great way to spend it! First thing this morning I took the bus back to the Denarau Marina to catch one of the ferries. I rode out to Mana Island where I then transferred to the Seaspray – a tall sailing ship. Right away we were greeted with champagne and snacks for a light breakfast. We sailed around Mana and headed off to the West, past more of the Mamanuca Islands. We were headed for Mondriki – the uninhabited island where the movie Castaway was filmed. We anchored off shore and I jumped into the water. I swam/snorkeled my way along the island’s reef and eventually reached the beach. Mondriki is so beautiful. It’s amazing how even though a major Hollywood movie filmed there ... read more

The last few days I’ve been hopping around to different islands, some good, some not so good. From Mantaray, I went to the island of Waya to the Octopus resort. I’d planned to stay at Octopus for 4 nights and was really looking forward to it. I’d only heard good things about the resort, that it was really nice. My guidebook had it for the top pick in the Yasawas. Unfortunately though, I only ended up staying one night . . . The resort was nice. Very nice. It’s not a backpackers resort at all. It gears to families, middle-aged couples. They just happen to also have a dorm for budget travelers like me to stay in to enjoy the resort. I first realized that I was not the market they were catering to when I ... read more

Two days ago I left the Northern Yasawas. The Yasawa Flyer (the boat I’ve been getting around on) went through the Blue Lagoon before we headed back down south. I stood up on the top deck and took photos, enjoyed the view one more time. Later that afternoon, I arrived at Mantaray Island where I’ve spent the last couple nights. Mantaray Island is named because in the waters nearby Manta Rays swim in the channel. Seasonally, you can snorkel with them. My guide book as well as a few things I’d read online before I left home said that the season went through into October, so I’d thought perfect, I’ll be able to see them. Once I reached the Yasawas however and met other travelers, I’d heard that the manta rays had already left! Sure enough, ... read more

One of Fiji’s most famous spots is the Blue Lagoon, from the movie of the same name. For the last 6 days I’ve been able to see the lagoon across the water from the islands I’ve been staying on. But today I finally went there. The resort where I’m staying offers boat tours over there every morning and afternoon and there was a group of us piled in the boat this morning. It was a slow ride over. The water is really choppy today and the boat we were in was just a small motorboat so we were being tossed around with the motor just going slowly. But we made it without losing anyone - just getting really wet from the water splashing. We went over to the far side of the lagoon first. Our captain ... read more

This afternoon, right after lunch, I said farewell to the island of Nacula where I’d been staying on a stunning beach. Then I cross the water to the next island over, Tavewa, where I’ll be staying for two nights. I’m staying now at another backpackers resort called Coral View. It doesn’t have the gorgeous beach out front, but I still really like it here. The property is spread out. All the buildings are within gardens. The pathways are lined with bushes with brightly coloured flowers. And my bed is super comfy! I spent some time exploring the property and the area around it. Behind my dorm is a pathway that leads to another beach on the Eastern side of the island. It’s nice but when I went over it was low tide so it wasn’t the ... read more

Yesterday I had another long day of “nothing” on the beautiful beach at Oarsman’s. Actually, I organized my photos and got this blog up to date which took plenty of time. I lounged in the hammock too, reading. I avoided time in the sun to let my skin have some relief from the sun. Today is the day I leave behind the beautiful beach here and move on to another island. But first, I took a long walk this morning along the side of the island. I walked to the end of the beach where my resort is, across a long row of rocks, along a couple more beaches and eventually reached a sandbar that stretched out into the ocean. Along the walk I saw literally hundreds of hermit crabs. Every step I took cause multiple ... read more

Exploring Sawa-i-Lau Caves . . .

Today rather than “just” spending time on the (gorgeous) beach where I’m staying, I signed up for one of the resort’s tours. Soon after breakfast, myself and three other guests boarded the resort’s small motorboat and headed out across the stunning sparkling blue water. Sawa-i-Lau is a small island, one of the most Northern islands in the Yasawas. The Yasawa islands are made from volcanic rock, but Sawai-i-Lau is limestone. On the island is a cave system that you can swim in and that’s where we headed. It was about half an hour by boat from our resort on Nacula to the beach at Sawa-i-Lau. The views along the way were beautiful but the sea is pretty choppy today so the ride was rough. From the beach, we took a set of concrete steps up, then ... read more
