Nervousness, apprehension, excitement. These are but only three of the words which can describe our feelings as we approached the run up to the countdown of the beginning of our trip last week. 8 months travelling around Asia, a region which we both love and have visited on a few occasions, but feel we still need to scratch much deeper than just the surface. And now the day is here! After months and months of planning, researching, saving, packing up our flat and belongings and saying goodbye to family and friends, we are sitting in the Virgin Clubhouse Lounge at Heathrow airport waiting for our 1st class 12 hour flight to Tokyo! Thanks to the air miles Scott has racked up over the years by flying to San Francisco for work we were able to upgrade ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao April 19th 2012

On all previous visits to Thailand, Ko Tao has always been our 'nearly' island. So many times we have planned to go and at the last minute changed our minds or just ran out of time. Well this time, even though we were having such a blast on Koh Samui and the fact that we had heard that Tao itself only really catered to divers, we decided it was something we must see, even if just for a day or two. Boy are we so glad we did, so much so, that we ended up staying a full 4 days and at the time we were there could have gladly agreed to stay there for the rest of our lives! We were up early for the fast boat from Samui to Tao and arrived just after ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui April 16th 2012

Although an island we had visited on our travels before, the weather then was pretty much torrential rain the whole time so we were both excited to be going back to Samui. We had originally planned to explore a bit more of the island this time, however, as we were on such a short time frame and arriving in the middle of Songkran, we again based ourselves in Chewang. Our flight arrived from Bangkok on time to probably the smallest and cutest airport either of us had ever seen, the weather was glorious and as we waited for our luggage we couldn't wait to get to our hotel and onto the beach. After a short delay the luggage started coming round the small conveyor belt and after a while out came the super soakers with their ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok April 13th 2012

Wet, wet, wet. Nope, not the 80's Scotish rock band - Welcome to Songkran, the Thai New Year! What originally started as a way of paying respect to people by pouring a small amount of water on them (by capturing the water after it had been poured over the Buddhas for cleansing and then using this "blessed" water to give good fortune to elders and family by gently pouring it on the shoulder) has now evolved into a full on 3-5 day water fight - with the emphasis on fun and ice cold water buckets rather than for an religious or spiritual reasons. We arrived from Chiang Mai into Bangkok at around about 8pm and quickly jumped into a taxi heading for Khoa San Rd where we had pre-booked our selves into one of the more ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai April 8th 2012

Hooray, we were finally back in the land of smiles! After deliberating for a few weeks on where to go on our next two week holiday, we got a great deal on some flights to Bangkok and couldn't wait to get back to Thailand, probably our favourite country, so planned an itinerary that would re-visit some of our favourite places from 2010. First stop was Chiang Mai (CM) in the North of the country, and after a long but good flight with Thai Airways we collected our bags in Bangkok and checked in for our short Air Asia flight to CM. On our previous visit we were mid way through a 4 month trip so stayed in a budget guesthouse, but as this was a holiday we decided to treat ourselves to a lovely hotel called ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi January 7th 2012

Delhi was not exactly what we expected, and not in a good way! We had read and heard really mixed reviews and experiences about this city, most of them pretty negative, but we went with an open mind and tried to see the positive side of things here, although by the end we both agreed it wasn't our favourite place we had visited, and would even go so far as to say we severly disliked the city and would never return here. Anyway, back to the start... We landed in Delhi in the early evening from Mumbai and straight away noticed the drop in temperature, it was really cold here! We got a taxi to our hotel which was located in the 'backpacker' area of Paharganj, near New Delhi train station, even though it was actually ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai January 3rd 2012

We arrived in Mumbai in the evening on January 3rd after a short flight from Goa and headed outside to get a taxi, where the chaos and poverty of this huge city was evident straight away. It was dark by the time we got a taxi but we could clearly see the massive slums we were driving through, with people sleeping on the dirty streets, dogs and children sharing water, and people begging. Checking the taxi doors were locked, the driver slammed on the brakes when a fight broke out on the road in front of us and someone went flying across the bonet of the battered car. Sleepy Goa this was not. We had underestimated the sheer size of Mumbai and almost 2 hours later finally arrived in South Mumbai in the Causeway area where ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Calangute December 26th 2011

After 3 flights, 3 different airports and 21 hours of travelling we finally arrived in Goa, our first stop on a 2 week trip to India. On first exiting the airport we headed to the outdoor taxi rank and immediately had to barter the price for a taxi - welcome back to Asia! Our hotel was in the beach town of Calungute, about 45 minutes away through winding rainforests and dusty side roads, and at 8am it was already hot, so after dropping our bags at our cute looking accomodation (a small-ish blue guesthouse called the Seagull) and changing, we went for a stroll down to the beach. The beach here was lovely, really wide with yellow sand and clear warm sea, and lined with small beach shacks, (although not as picturesque as the Thai beaches), ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas June 18th 2011

After a great few days in San Francisco, it was time to board our flight to Las Vegas, where we were meeting up with both of Scott’s brothers and their girlfriends for 3 days of partying. Vic’s visit was a surprise to them, they all thought she was at home in London while Scott was working in San Fran and then visiting Vegas on his own for a few days! But as the the girls had been asking her to please come to Vegas for months we knew they would be happily surprised. We landed about 11am after the short flight and got a cab from the airport to the strip where we had splashed out and were staying at the new Cosmopolitan hotel, located centre strip between the Bellagio and Aria. There is nothing like ... read more

San Francisco is without doubt one of my favourite cities in the World. I have been fortunate enough over the last 5 years to have travelled out here many times for work and always enoy it. However, I was more excited this time than ever been before as Victoria would be joining me out there for a few days before we both hoped over to Vegas to meet my brothers (and their better halves) for a long weekend of partying . . more on that to follow in the next blog. I had a pretty un-eventful flight on a cold Monday morning from London Heathrow to SFO and managed to get a few hours sleep as I would be heading straight to the office for a few hours once I landed at around 2:00pm PST, Victoria ... read more
