Bangkok and Koh Chang – part 1 Whilst we were sad to be leaving Vietnam, we were really excited to be arriving back in Thailand, probably our favourite country. Unfortunately the excitement was short lived as we discovered that Vic’s big backpack had been picked open (through the zip) by baggage handlers at Ho Chi Min airport, even though it had a cover and padlock on it, and some bits had been stolen which were hidden in secret compartments in the bag – we think they must have been seen as the bag went through the x-ray machine. We have flown hundreds of times and never had a problem so this was a real shock and we didn’t realise until we got to our hotel so not a lot we could do, but hopefully our insurance ... read more

The last five weeks in Vietnam have by far exceeded our expectations and it was no easy decision to finally leave as we have had such a brilliant time here and loved every minute, but as the saying goes 'all good things must come to an end'. However, as another saying goes, 'every cloud has a silver lining', so it is not the end of the world that we are moving onto Thailand next I suppose! When we arrived to Saigon it was dark but luckily our friends were already there so they met us and showed us where they were staying, useful as the alley ways around Pham Ngu Lao (backpacker area) can be hard to navigate at night. On the way we noticed staright away how many bikes there were on the roads and ... read more

The bus journey from Da Lat seemed straight forward enough and we were just outside of Mui Ne when the driver lost control of the bus as he was texting, clipping the kerb hard which sent the left wheels of the bus over the central reservation, so just the right side wheels were on the road. Everything on the left side of the bus (including above the seats) came hurtling over to the right side (including people), luggage which had been stacked up at the back came flying forward hitting people while we all ducked and held on tightly, we thought the bus was going to topple over but it swerved and spun until it finally braked to a sharp stop in the middle of the road. The engine was smoking and everyone was a bit ... read more

The weather in Da Lat was much cooler than on the coast and soon after arriving in shorts and t-shirts we were digging out the few warmer clothes that we had from the bottom of our backpacks to keep us warm for the couple of days we had planned to stay there. After seeing some pretty basic places we eventually found a really nice guesthouse to stay in and set about arranging our activity for the next day - a motorbike tour through the countryside with some Easy Riders. Easy Riders were a group of motorbike riders formed in Da Lat in the 80's who began to take tourists off the beaten path on bike trips, either for one day or for a few days, but not long ago split and went their seperate ways. As ... read more

After being ushered from possibly the worst overnight bus journey of our lives at 5am our first point of call was to find somewhere to stay, have a quick bite to eat and get a few hours shut-eye before getting up to explore Nha Trang. As a few of the other guys we have been travelling with had left Hoi An a few days before us, we had a good idea of the area we wanted to stay in and had soon secured a nice guesthouse with balcony for $9 a night. When we finally got up, we headed down to the beach for a while before walking around the area and checking out what there was to see and do. For as long as I can remember and after doing a few previous 'instructed fun ... read more

'No, i definately don't want to get anything made' I said for the tenth time as we passed the many tailor shops in Hoi An. 'I'm just going to get a suit I think' Scott said. We are not quite sure then how we ended up spending a lot of $$ on three suits, three dresses, two pairs of shorts and a coat! Ahh lovely Hoi An, a UNESCO town which is full of little lanes and car-free streets, has a pretty river which is lit up at night, and a gorgeous beach just outside of town - it's a very likeable place which we spent 5 days in quite happily. It is also full of tailor shops, apparently over 500, and with our love of clothes it's no wonder we ended up with a few ... read more

We didn't expect to stay long in Hue (pronounced H-way, hence the title) and didn't really have anything planned while we were there, but as soon as we arrived we liked the feel of the city and knew we would be staying an extra day or two. The sleeper bus from Ninh Binh wasn't too bad, apart from the Vietnamese dance music blasting out loudly which woke us all up - this would have been great in a club but not on a bus at 6am! We had met another couple on the bus, who actually live in Enfield (small world) so along with Hannah & Leigh the 6 of us set off to find some accomodation. For once we had been dropped off near the centre of town and so found a nice hotel for ... read more

After a brilliant few days in Cat Ba, we decided to carry on south to the small town of Ninh Binh, a journey which was supposed to take just 4 hours. Of course it took longer; we were on a hot, cramped bus loaded with big boxes so there was no room, and it kept stopping every few minutes to get locals on; at one point it did a detour to pick up some extra tyres were loaded onto the roof, and we finally got to Ninh Binh over 6 hours later Ninh Binh is not a pretty town, but most people come here to explore its scenic surroundings rather than stay in the town, which is what we intended to do as well, so after we found a hotel for the night we sorted out ... read more

Halong Bay was a 'must do' for us in Vietnam despite all the negative reports we had heard on it, so it was with slight trepidation that we booked a trip on a junk boat to see the famous karsts. We shopped around the many travel agencies in Hanoi to find one we were happy with and one which could arrange a one day tour of the bay for us but instead of returning to Hanoi, it would then drop us on the island of Cat Ba where we could spend a few days at our leisure...these few days coincided with my Birthday and turned out to be the highlight of our trip so far and the best decision we could have made! So, after hunting around Hanoi for ages for a travel agent who we ... read more

The sounds, the smells, the traffic - as soon as we arrived into Hanoi we knew we were back in South East Asia and were excited at the prospect. After a 10 hour sleeper bus from Sapa we were greeted by the usual taxi mafia trying to charge over inflated prices for the short journey into the Old Quarter so walked a few metres down the road and found a taxi at a fair price. We all sat down in a cafe to ice cold smoothies which were great as the change in temperature was already apparent even though it was only still 8am, then set off to find some accomodation for the next 2 nights. We found a small guesthouse and after haggling the price we checked in and had a quick rest before going ... read more
