Abandoned Oh my god - I often wondered whether there was actually a train from that train station in Rocky we dropped you at - if only I'd know you'd spend 16 hours in a truck stop! Many apologies for abandoning you, remember to check timetables next time before some more nasty english folk push you out the van and leave you at the side of the road!
Stupid Pens Really weird as I just packed my favourite pens in my backpack so I'd have them to write with...bit of a staple!! Did you catch any of the World Cup fever there? Certainly it's all over here!! 4 more sleeps and I'm gone!
Hey Kris -
My sister Isla is in Sydney. If you are going back there, you should look her up. Drop me an email and I will give you her contact info.

My Country It's so funny reading blogs about the city that I live in and that I am from...I just don't see it the same way...which is why I guess I am off to Africa. But it's cool to see it from someone else's perspective!
yellow dart, you should be a lawyer thanks whoever you are for the praise and support! I now am racking my brain trying to guess who wrote this. Thank you Dave, Jana, Shiplack or Nichole (Those are my top 4 guesses).
Peace and Love!
Hey Kris. I must say that I am very impressed that you are still in possesion of your camera. Not only have you not lost it, but you are actually making use of it. The pictures and stories are great, keep up the good work.
No apologies needed! This response is a bit late as you are now on a different continent; however, I have to come to the defence of my old friend Mr. Sardines, a "citizen of the world" (for the record).
There is a fundamental difference between a traveller and tourist. "Travelman," thinks there is no distinction so from now on I will be referring to the aforementioned as "Touristman". The difference is one of self-realization versus self-indulgence. A traveller is on a journey as opposed to a vacation. A traveller is open-minded to learning and experiencing new things. A tourist (man) hides behind tourbus windows and fortified hotels seeking to catch an artificial glimpse of the indigenous culture to keep as a kitchy souvenir or mount on the wall like a prize. The rest of the vacation is spent in the sun sipping exotic cocktails and haggling over prices of trinkets that can be bought wholesale from their sweatshop of choice.
A traveller learns a lesson about sustainability and must rely on himself to find his own way. The traveller, carries a pack and can't afford to burden himself with accumulating material wealth. The one luxury a traveller can afford is a camera, taking pictures that matter - have meaning, and memory.
"Mr. Happysnaps" is a fucking tourist, and every other traveller with a camera is consciously aware of avoiding this dubious distinction. Some believe you capture souls within a picture. If that is the case, then tourists are pornographers and travellers are prophets.
So "Touristman", next time you get on your soap-box telling people where to go, consider that you don't have to suck on everything that gets put in your mouth! The world and society are continuously changing and evolving. I think the traveller will be the one that will be able to tell it like it really is.
Duey: Have a great ride in Oz!
As if I can't believe you're still being so hardcore! More hardcore than ever! I think to top it all off you should try to cut yourself purposely and go swimming in a tank of sharks and then we'll see if you're the real deal, Mr. H.C.
Previously: Moved to England to teach high school english- gave up, quit and left for round the world trip. Traveled through the Middle East, SE Asia, Australia, NZ, and Fiji prior to arriving back home to Canada. Spent the next school year trying desperately to be the cool substitute teacher who tells stories of wild adventures and remembers what it was like to be a teenager... Failed miserably. Lived and worked in Valencia Spain with my girlfriend (now wife!) Dennie for 2 years, and taught highschool drama. After a year teaching Grade 7/8 at a community school, I now teach high school histo... full info
