After almost 30 hours of travel, we made it! Southeast Asia is such an amazing region of the world and so far Myanmar is just as lovely as the rest of the places we've visited. While I'm still a little bummed that we felt it necessary to cancel Bangladesh, I am so happy to be here! On our first day, we explored Yangon on foot in the pouring rain, got lost, I fell down and we just had an all around good time. On The second day in Yangon, we got lucky with weather. The sun actually came out for about an hour in the rain did not appear until around 1 PM. We took advantage oh this break in weather and went to the massive, stunning and very slippery Shwe Dagon Pagoda. In addition to ... read more

So since we did not have access to phones for photos or ease of access to the internet, I have put together some trip notes and details to summarize our amazing trip to Cuba with our bikes! Here are the overall stats: trip was from 6/3-6/21 total distance biked - 815km or 509 miles number of flats - 4(Alyssa), 0(Andrew) pizzas consumed - 20-30 longest distance in a day - 170km or 107 miles number of days on the bikes - 11 average speed - 20-24km/hour or 12-14 m/hour June 3 Left home around 8pm, got to the airport, checked in and said hasta luego to the bicycles... June 4 We arrived in Mexico City around 5am, had to go through immigration, retrieve the bikes, transport them to a different floor, get them wrapped in blue ... read more

Well we found internet, but still no cameras. However, I have a strategy - when we see obvious tourists, we ask them to take our photo and to email it to us when they return to their respective homes... we will see how that pans out. Stats to date: -approximately 400 KM covered -approximately 10 pizzas/each consumed -lots of local music under the night skies -lots of soda (super weird because I hate soda at home) -score on flats 4(Alyssa):0(Andrew) -score of crib games 4(Andrew):0(Alyssa) - so wrong! That's about it. It's hot, the food is edible, the towns and rolling countryside spectacular and the people incredibly friendly and welcoming. Oh and sorry Janna - happy birthday yesterday! Alyssa and Andrew... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Matanzas June 8th 2016

Here we are in Playa Larga, Matanzas, Cuba and all is well. In fact all is great. We spent 2 nights in Havana and since then have so far put in about 200km on our bikes. This will not be a long post and sadly it may be one of the only and even worse, there may be no photos documenting this trip. It turns out our phones don't really like the humid, rainy tropics, so yeah, neither device is working and those were the only cameras we brought. To make things more complicated, for this purpose, access to leisure goods (like cameras) is quite limited here, so no photos past Havana. Immediate thoughts: -people are amazing here and the lifestyle simple -somehow all 200km so far have been flat or slightly up hill and against ... read more

We are in the final stages of preparation for our first ever bike riding trip! At this point, our bikes are tuned up and it seems as if our rigged luggage is going to work. This is a great success as Andrew's bike was initially declined from a repair shop, due to its old, decrepit state and on our longest training ride we discovered a number of glitches with my pannier attachment system and Andrew's front derailleur snapped in half. Tomorrow the bikes will be taken apart and carefully placed in boxes that hopefully will arrive in Havana in 1 piece along with us on June 4th. We fly out of SFO on Friday around 11pm and should land in Havana around 2pm on 6/4 after a bit of a lay over in Mexico City. The ... read more

We spent our last night in Dar es Salaam celebrating my passing of the BCBA exam. We acted totally out of character and booked an executive room at the Serena Hotel and enjoyed all the benefits. We did look a bit out of place arriving to this 5 star establishment on foot with dirty backpacks and clothes that could use a wash... But they didn't kick us out so we were happy! Wow, six days and nights in paradise is really refreshing and a superb way to end this epic adventure! We spent our first night in the Seychelles on Mahe, the biggest and most populous island. The following morning we walked around Victoria, the capital, and bought some fresh fruit and vegetables before boarding the ferry to much smaller La Digue. It is our last ... read more

We will start with savannah - since there are so many big cats in Tanzanian parks we will do a top 5 list of cat moments. Now before that, bear in mind that we camped 4 nights, in a tent, no fences, in the parks, with lots of lions... Yeah that's right, no getting up to pee in the night. 5 - tie between 5a. mama lion and 2 cubs playing around in a big acacia tree in the Serengeti in the evening 5b. Pride of 6 lioness and 3 cubs feasting on what was obviously a zebra - about 10 feet from where we were parked to watch 4 - lioness in an acacia tree with carcass of a wildebeest hanging, fully extended from a large branch - Serengeti 3 - leopards! We saw leopards ... read more

So we climbed Africa's highest peak! And we both made it - a few headaches, some slight dizziness and a little stumbling - but we did it! The highest point, Uhuru Peak, is at 5895 Meters. That's really high. We camped on the sides of the mountain each night on our way up, we had an amazing group of porters, cook and guide to help us along the way. On the 5th night, the alarm went of at 12am and with the wind howling we dressed for our climb. After some porridge and coffee we started our climb. We started around 1am (our guide said we were fast so we started late relative to others) and walked by the light of the moon to the peak. Pole pole (slowly slowly in Swahili) we walked. It was ... read more

We crossed the border into Uganda 10 days ago and were greeted by a very "friendly" man at Uganda customs who did not like the looks of our $20 bills - we had to pay for our visas in US $ - he told us to go back to Kenya. We persuaded him to take 5 of our finest bills and after the line grew to 10 people he grudgingly accepted. Welcome to Uganda! Our first stop was Jinja, a town famed for housing the source of the Nile River. While the sight of the source was not super impressive, in concept we found it pretty cool. We spent a day getting used to things in Uganda, rode a boda-boda, ate delicious local food and did what we do best - wander aimlessly. We ended up ... read more

And into Africa we went. After arriving in Kenya with roughly 30 hours of travel under our belts, we were excited to start exploring. Nairobi was our first stop, and we stared out the windows of our transit anxiously awaiting our chance to get out and have a better look. Problem was, 30 hours of travel really takes it out of you, so the only exploring we did day 1 was both sides of our pillows. We were able to get out for a small walk around dinner time, but we were told to stick to exploring during day light hours as Nairobi can be a bit unsafe after dark. We settled into a nice Swahili restaurant for food, and were charmed by the friendly servers. They we were off on Safari. After many hours in ... read more
