We are in China and well! Food bugs have been eradicated and weight we may have lost due to food borne illness is quickly being found again in the form of dumplings and perfectly fried noodles. Having a blast, proper update to come on some later date, until then .... Viva China!... read more

Laos is a truly amazing place. We have had the pleasure of spending the last 2 weeks in this beautiful albeit rapidly developing country. At the moment we could be better (2 days ago I spent a 9 hour bus ride holding my stomach, only to purge all contents at the stops, since late last night Andrew has decided to copy me and has been ridding his body of internal contents for the last 12+ hours), but at least the scenery is beautiful and the people are extremely friendly. So we have pretty much (unintentionally) followed basically the same route that I took through Laos 4 years ago. It is amazing to watch a developing country in the midst of development. So much has changed in 4 years - there is now a supermarket and a ... read more

"Happy happy" is what the local people say as they squirt and dump water on you while someone else is smearing watered down talc powder on your face and your arms. We managed to arrive in Bangkok at the start of the Songkran Festival. A festival that celebrates the Lunar New Year, representational of the Thai, Khmer and Lao New Year as well. So here is how it works. You arm yourself with something, squirt gun, bucket, water bottle with holes poked ... then you take to the streets, any streets and you squirt people. It is great fun - most likely the biggest and longest (lasts 3 days) water fight in the world. Best thing is everyone participates, old and young. It is a pretty common sight to see groups of people dumping buckets of ... read more

Selamat Pagi (good morning), We've traversed half a country and not updated the blog, our bad. Last we checked in we were leaving Singapore, the country of 'nice'. Assuming we were heading back to 'not so nice' in Malaysia, we crossed early in the morning to give a good shot at getting north to Melaka. We were whisked through the border and to a bus station in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Things appeared normal for Asia: choked air full of smog and exhaust, vendors yelling to buy this or that, food scattering in the breeze with rats and roaches scurrying after it. Then we got on the bus. Wow, 'nice'. Air con, leg room, and chairs big enough to rival lazy-boy recliners. I might get used to travel in Malaysia. A few hours later (although I wouldn't ... read more

Quick entry with no photos - sorry. We left Indonesia for Singapore on the 21st of March. Third country so far. Singapore is different, feels a bit more like Western Europe than Asia, actually feels more advanced and modern than Western Europe. Singapore is nice. You can drink tap water here, there is no possibility of food born illness, there is no and I mean NO litter and despite all these nice things the city still has a heart beat. There is a lot of ethnic diversity here and some very interesting Ethnic neighborhoods. We have explored the neighborhood where we are staying, Little India as well as the Arab Quarter, Chinatown, Orchard Road (major shopping street), the Botanical Gardens and many other parts of this interesting little place. Best description we can come up with ... read more

So I guess we have not really done any entries in Indonesia. Here is a recap: Bali- We arrived after 7 weeks in Australia and well felt a bit like we had landed in Australia. Don't think I ever need to return to Bali. Extremely touristic, beaches literally covered in trash and lots of Australian tourists in Beer Bintang tank tops. Not that there is anything wrong with any of that, just not my cup of tea. On one day we did manage to find a waterfall with no other Westerners and that was nice, but that was about it. Java- From Bali we took a mini-bus, then a ferry, then a bemo, then a bus, then a minibus to our first destination - Mt. Bromo or Gurung Bromo. Now that was amazing. We arrived as ... read more

We're in Indonesia! Covered Bali and parts of Java (including a very active Mt. Bromo - was spewing lava high into the air), then took an overnight boat to Sulawesi. We're in Makassar now, heading farther north on the island tomorrow. After a couple weeks here we're heading back to Java then on to Sumatra. Enjoy the pictures, we enjoyed taking them. ... read more

Do you ever get that feeling, first thing in the morning, like you’re completely lost and have no bearing on the world around you? Mostly it’s dark, but there seems to be a faint glow of green. A strange sound comes from outside, probably what woke me up in the first place. Sounds like… sounds like… sounds like an orangutan laughing. Can’t be, where the heck am I? Now there seems to be something yellow around me. Now another strange sound, something possibly chewing something? Figure this out Andrew. Hmm.. Australia, the land down under. You’d think the yellow and green tent I’ve spent the last 35 days in would scream ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie Oy Oy Oy’ every time I woke up. But no, I guess driving all around this country, sleeping in different national parks ... read more

... so far in the 15 days we have been on our roadtrip around Australia we have had 1 completely dry day. I guess the rain and leaky tents just make it more fun. We left Brisbane on the 9th and from there headed south along the coast. We stopped over in Byron Bay, lots of hippie, surfer folk there - we watched the sunrise at the lighthouse in Byron (the Eastern most point on continental Australia). That was pretty awesome. After a couple of days we ended up in Sydney where we stayed 2 nights. Everything was super expensive but the city had a lot of great parks. We went to the Australian National Museum and that was spectacular - taxidermy animals, tons of skeletons, displays containing all of the reptiles, bugs and birds on ... read more

We arrived as scheduled on Jan. 2 to Brisbane. Hailey greeted us at the airport and transported us to our new home base for this leg of our trip. Spent the first two days and nights exploring Brisbane. A really pretty city with a lot of public parks and nice river front walks. We headed over to Daisy Hill, a local park and Andrew had a chance to see his first wallabies and koalas. On our third day in Australia, Andrew and I took the truck, some provisions and a ton of maps and books and headed out for a couple days. First stop was to go out for a bush walk up Mount Greville. It was a gorgeous walk up a gorge filled with ferns, mosses, occasional flowers and a ton of spiders. The spiders ... read more
