A Small World After surviving our first sleeper bus experience we rolled into Nha Trang at about 6am, when obviously all of Vietnam is in fact fully awake by then, we managed to eventually find a really nice hotel and headed straight for the beach. Paul and Jamie couldn't decide on what to build in the sand, they started off by building a giant toaster, which turned into a kind of Arabian fort complex before turning into just a very big hole. That evening we went out for a meal at a restaurant which offered free rum & coke or vodka & lemonade all evening as long as you ordered a meal, so quite a few rum & cokes later we wandered down to a club on the beach only to be told that it free ... read more

Hue? Huh? Hue? Hey? The first thing that struck us in Hue was the rain, and it pretty much continued until we left. The citadel was being renovated and the boat trips to the temples were writen off due to the weather so we headed off to Hoi An and were welcomed to an intimate little town with pretty houses, friendly locals and more importantly sunshine. It was so hot in fact that we went for a cheeky swim in the hotels pool which was possibly the closest experience you could get to swimming around the Arctic circle. Alas on our day trip to the My Son temples we got well and truly drenched, and, shock of all shocks, our minibus broke down so upon getting to the tourist entrance of the temples we begrudgingly bought ... read more

In Vietnam The Little Hanoi Hotel was amazing, not only did we get a free pickup from the airport (do love seeing a sign with your name on it at the airport) but also a free breakfast on arrival and free fresh fruit and flowers in our clean and spacious room every day, all for the equivalent of about 3.50quid per night. On top of the amazing accomodation it was quite a relief after the expensiveness of Hong Kong to be able to get a cheap beer (apparently the cheapest in the World) in one of the many bia hoi's in the city which was pretty much road-side stalls with childs plastic seats and cups of beer for 3000 Dong (don't start Paul off with the names of Asian currencies) which is the equivalent to 10p ... read more

End of the China trip With five nights of Hong Kong ahead of us we had our farewell group dinner near the markets in Kowloon Bay, Paul ordered the chicken's feet and by the look on his face afterwards I think he wish he hadn't. Food faux pas aside we departed the following day for our home for the next four nights, the monolith monstrosity that is the Chung King Mansions. Don't let the mansions thing fool you, the decrepit old building was full of touts, crooks, immigrants and probably most worryingly Al Qaeda grafiti, only the best for us... The first night we stayed in one section of Chungy Mansions and our hostel was literally like the Shining, a long dark corridor, bed bugs, cockroaches and fusty damp air. The second night we moved to ... read more

The Big Walk We were quite nervous about walking the Longji Terraces as neither of us were in the best of health but we got a feel of it by doing a 1 hour walk up to the first village that we were staying in and even though the terrain was tough going we both felt more confident that the next day we would be able to complete the long trek without perishing. The first village we stayed in was on the side of a hill and consisted of a few shops and a hostel so it was nice and quiet and gave us a chance to relax and soak up the amazing surroundings. That night with not much of a nightlife in the village we decided on watching Borat with the rest of the group ... read more

The Chinese Countryside After a mammoth 22 hour train journey (which stupidly involved more drinking) we arrived at the holiday resort of Yangshou, with its marked-clad streets packed tightly between massive pointed skyscrapers of rock like a large upside-down egg carton. The town was absolutely heaving with Chinese tourists (we'd managed to time our trip to visit one of China's most popular tourist destinations with the Chinese national week holiday...) but that didn't stop us making the most of our two nights in the med-meets-oriental resort. On our first morning we left Fawlty Towers (true to its name we had a broken bathroom light and flooding toilet, which we eventually completely broke) for a cruise down the nearby river that ran through the fore-mentioned giant hills that dotted the whole area. After a bit of a ... read more

Shanghai Surprise! - Stomach Bugs and Death Spheres On the sleeper train to Shanghai a few of us thought it would be a good idea to drink alcohol. Turns out it was a terrible idea, which co-incidentally marked the start if quite a bad stomach bug that managed to work its way around almost all of the group starting with Issy who duly fainted after leaving the train station. Luckily as it turned out Kim is a nurse so her medical expertise immediately came in handy. That afternoon we went to explore the city and it was Suze's turn to have an upset stomach, this time leading to vomiting on the street (the splashback landed on some poor persons bicycle pedals), while Kim again looked after the walking wounded Paul rushed off to get water and ... read more

Back on the sleeper trains The first of our four sleeper trains in China was to get from Beijing to Xi'an, first impressions were that the Chinese sleeper trains were cleaner than the Indian ones (these trains had carpets, wow) and also more organised, our train actually left on time which couldn't be said for any of our Indian trains. The lights were turned off promptly at 10pm and the train was buzzing with activity at 6am so it was a pretty groggy Suze and Paul that pulled into Xi'an early in the morning. To be honest we really didn't know too much about Xi'an so when we got there we were pleasantly surprised by the cities mix of big city skyscrapers and small town charm. Finally in China! After a mammoth trip from Trivandrum to Singapore then finally into Beijing via a McDonalds at the airport and our first taste of meat in two and a half weeks, we got to the Hostel in Beijing and immediately fell in love with the city. There's so much to see and do and the culture was so different to India everything seemed a lot easier, cleaner and friendlier although slightly more expensive, we realised pretty much straight away that there would be no more 50p rickshaw rides. We spent five nights in Beijing which is a lot for us on our travels and we managed to cram a lot in as usual, the Olympic site and Heavenly Palace were really great, at the Palace gardens we saw loads of people singing in groups, doing ... read more

Relaxing in Goa After such a hectic schedule it was really nice to have a few days on the beach in one of the Worlds most beautiful beach resorts. The room and hotel were great and even the locals were much friendlier, as were there just before the start of the season it was much quieter than we thought it was going to be so at some points we had the entire beach to ourselves, with the occasional small Indian child asking us if were married. After exploring the quiet town of Colva during the day and generally getting sunburn, we went to a restaurant on the beach to watch the sunset, which we almost did until it started to pour it down monsoon style so we decided to havea few Indian beers instead and enjoy ... read more
