The Kimberley Drive The drive from Katherine to the Kimberley region was really picturesque, with its constantly changing scenery it made the journey through the small towns of Australians northern outback a really enjoyable experience. One minute we were driving through a rugged hilly area, the next through a vast endless plain filled with bizarre shaped boab trees and other random plantlife and exotic features. Our first stop after Katherine was the tiny dot on the map of Victoria River, population of about 50 or so. The campsite was basic but nice enough and we met a curious but comedic old Aussie bloke who had converted an old Greyhound bus into a motorhome which was literally four times the size of our van, big enough for its own specific beer fridge. We could only dream. Losing ... read more

Exploring the Northern Territories Finally we got our campervan and home for the next month. After a mess up by the rental company we spent two nights in Darwin making the most of the great weather and things to do, as well as the $3.50 meals at the pub, and headed off for Litchfield National Park. Altough being so close to Kakadu, Litchfield was a world apart with its easily accessible sights, completely different landscape and environment and was also a lot smaller in size. We went for a dip in the Wangi Falls to cool off towards the end of a long drive and set up camp for the night, which due to the stifling heat of the evenings we found pretty hard to do without just collapsing in a heap. The next morning we ... read more

Touring the Top End The train journey on the famous Ghan up to Darwin offered incredible views of the Aussie outback and a really unique experience but unfortunately possibly the worst nights sleep ever due to the not-so reclining seats and noise of the train. So it was with a fair bit of exhaustion we entered Darwin and the very next morning (we hadn't planned this very well at all) were back on a 4WD truck for a 2 day trip around Kakadu National Park. With only 9 on a trip meant for 16 people there was a lot of space and a lot more food and opportunity to befriend our guide and learn as much as possible about life in the Northern Territories and the environment. We started with a boat cruise along the Adelaide ... read more

Swags, snags and a load of big rocks We stepped off the plane at Alice Springs tiny airport to the scorching heat and clear skies that we had long since forgotten after a winter in Melbourne. We also were filled with trepidation as it had been a while since we had travelled and since then we had settled down in our nice flat and had money coming in so it was going to be a complete change again. The next morning arrived and we were straight on to our 3 day trip around Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta in the red centre. There were 23 people in our group and only the 3 Brits and a real diverse spread of nationalities and walks of life. The first day after stopping at a tiny roadhouse we ... read more

Autumn and Winter in Melbourne We managed to fit a bit more into the final couple of months in Melbourne despite the fact that we were working full-time and triyng to save for the rest of our trip. We paid a visit to Melbourne Zoo which had an excellent collection of bears, lions, tigers and monkeys, all in a huge natural setting with plenty of wandering space for both us and the animals. We also took a boat cruise down the Yarra River on a sunny Autumnal day from Southbank to the quaint seaside town of Williamstown, just the other side of the bay from St Kilda. Somehow we even managed to end back up at the Neigbours Nights again where we got to meet (and abuse) the 'stars' as well as receive another rasping performance ... read more

Birthdays and Visitors Just in time for Suze's birthday, Jane and Betty came to stay for three weeks to celebrate it and spend some time exploring more of Melbourne and its surrounds. We spent Suze's birthday on the beach with a big bbq, a spot of cricket and some swimming in the sea in nearby Elwood which was a very Aussie birthday! After spending a week or so around Sr Kilda we went down to the Great Ocean road wth Jane, stopping in at a couple of really nice apartments along the way at Lorne and Apollo Bay which was pretty much right on the beach. We also visited the Otway Flyer treetops walk which was great walking around at the same level as the tops of the massive trees in the area, and even managed ... read more

Settling down We spent all of January fruitlessly looking for jobs. The economy was shaky and nobody wanted to hire Brits so we consoled ourselves by taking up jogging around Albert Park and relaxing on the beach as well as going out with friends around Melbourne. We both had numerous interviews with agencies, and in between stopping businessmen getting mugged (ask Paul...) and seeing Suze's aunty and uncle we were pretty much busy the whole month just seeing some sights and doggedly trying to get jobs to pay the rent. Back to reality, back to work Suze managed to find a telesales job in the city working on commision, not the best job but in a great location in the CBD and it was money coming in which was important. Paul got a telesales role for ... read more

Happy Christmas Melbourne! Arriving back in Melbourne felt a little bit like coming home. Not only did we get the opportunity to spend Christmas with Suze's family, they also made us feel really part of the family, even as far as buying us some presents to open on Christmas Day morning! With Suze's Aunty's family all being Greek-Macedonian it gave the holiday an even more interesting feel, if having a walk around the estate on Christmas Eve evening in shorts and t-shirts wasn't different enough, we ended up with a giant lamb on a spit for Christmas dinner and although it was a totally new experience we really enjoyed it, as well as keeping in contact with home as much as possible to fel like we were involved with what was going on back there too. ... read more

Touching down in Oz Alas! We arrived in Sydney, excited to be back in Australia and in familiar territory. We stayed in Base in the middle of the city and started out by seeing the usual tourist places such as the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge (can't get tired of those views) and we head to Darling Harbour for some food in the evening and a quiet stroll. We also had the opportunity to a little bit of Christmas shopping, it was starting to feel a little more Christmassy now with all the decorations up around the city but still difficult to get used to the heat. We speant a really nice day in Bondi checking out the shops, not that we could afford anything mind, and some time by the beach and also spent ... read more

Party island, woop! After another grim boat ride we found ourselves in Ko Pha Ngan, famous party island and home of the original 'Full Moon Party' which we had timed our trip to be able to go to. Upon realising that we had fairly nice accommodation but cold showers for another four nights we hired a hog and head down to the town of Haad Rin where most of the action was concentrated. The main beach, albeit slightly reminiscent of a town in southern spain full of british holiday-makers, at least had a really beautiful beach and after a bit of exploring managed to find a really quiet section for a quiet drink. The drive back to the hotel was crazy, at one point I literally thought we would have to get off and push the ... read more
