Today I’m skipping our two morning dives so I can get my online homework done for the day, buuuuuuut…….the internet isn’t working. So that’s cool. Apparently us Americans used three days worth of their very limited bandwidth within a two hour span last night. The internet provider cut us off for 24 hours. We do three dives a day. On the evenings that we do a night dive, we skip the after lunch dive. Since we'll have spare time before the night dive, we’re heading back to mainland Utila to check things out. That’s why I opted to do my homework this morning; the night dive doesn’t start until 6:30pm, then dinner, then we’ll be whipped. Breathing that tank air takes everything out of you. .....Walking around here at night is neat, but you have to ... read more

Today our dive leader let me borrow his dive computer. It’s the first affordable computer sold to divers called the Skinny Dipper. It tells you how long you’ve been down, your depth, and the time you have left to safely dive. No memory, no beeping, no buttons, no fancy graphs, warnings or features. Bare bones necessities and it is great. Plus, it works, which is a major improvement from the one I rented. I couldn’t get down at first because I got rid of some of my weights on the previous dive. Alex followed the wrong group and was long gone before I got down. The boat driver gave me another weight and I buddied up with our dive master, Marlo. She carries around a three-pronged spear. There are these awesome looking Lion Fish that are ... read more

The day started at 6:30 in the morning. Our dive equipment was transported to the boat and we headed to breakfast. The first dive of the trip is an easy one that is mostly for everyone to get their weights right and acclimated to the water. I didn’t do so well. Actually, I didn’t “do” at all. I freaked. I’ve gained a lot of weight since we bought my wetsuit and on top of the tight fit, over the years, I’ve developed a lot of anxiety. I kept telling Alex I should just rent a wetsuit and leave mine at home, but he talked me into just trying it. I felt like I couldn’t breathe before we even hit the water. Once we did, attempting to let all of the air out of my lungs so ... read more
Hola Honduras!
Puddle Jumper to Utila
Our fancy (scary) plane

You guys are going to be so jealous when I get back to Michigan with this rockin’ tan…….on my hands. That’s one downside to wetsuits – awkward tan lines. We made it safe and sound to Utila; an island off of Honduras near Roatan (where we went to complete our open water followed by our advanced diving certifications). Utila is sought after by divers in hopes of getting a glimpse of the large whale shark beauties. It is a shark that is as big as a whale, but eats mostly plankton. It is the largest fish in the sea and can get up to 40 feet long! Once we arrived in Honduras, we had to take a commuter plane to Utila. It was a small, I want to say 16 passenger, plane. Old planes with loud ... read more

We headed south with friends, Chassen and John...the trip was sure to be interesting if nothing else. Neither of them have left the country, both are single, ready to mingle, and excited to take on Cabo. The resort was incredible. I had no idea what we were in for and it wound up being perfect. The boys each got their own bed and a private bath. There was a living space with a full kitchen. Alex and I had a huge master bedroom & a private bathroom with jacuzzi. Our room, their room, and the living space all had an ocean view with sliding glass doors to access the patio. There were a couple of padded lounge chairs on the patio. Chassen and John slept out there a couple of times. Where we were staying, you ... read more

Once we were out of the canyon, we crashed for a night in Flagstaff, then headed south to Sedona, Arizona. We stayed at a motel for the night that a middle age hippie couple bought after falling in love with the area. There had been a flash flood just days before we got in and an article in the paper with pictures of cars flipped, roads washed out, and other damage to the area. Frankly, I was too sore to really enjoy Sedona and I would like to go back. There are a lot of trails in the red rocks that would be great for hiking. We visited one vortex site and walked around town. From then on it was a race against time. We tried to follow some of Route 66, but we were simply ... read more

UPDATED: January 3, 2009 I saw a t-shirt that said, "I Love the Grand Canyon" with a hip design that I kind of liked. I decided that I would wait until after we hiked out of the Grand Canyon before I made any purchasing decisions. I wound up buying a shot glass instead If they had a shirt that said, "I might love the Grand Canyon a few years from now when the incredible pain from hiking to the bottom and back out is a distant memory"....I would have bought that one. We were off to a good start heading down the South Kaibab Trail. A couple hours into it I thought to myself, "this is great...I could do this all day!" Our bags were heavy with water. While there are a couple water stations on ... read more

Whoa. Since my last entry, we have driven all around the state of Colorado, visited Utah, and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back. We originally planned all these great places to see...Yellowstone, Yosemite, etc, but between concert tickets I bought for a show in Colorado and a last minute opening for the hike down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the time restraints eliminated a lot of options. However, it did create the chance to see a lot more of Colorado than originally planned. I'd like to start by saying how much I appreciate: A. Hiking Boots B. The car is officially our home. Car chargers, dirty clothes, random fruit and bags of chips.... Our belongings are in every crack and crevice of that thing. If you're planning a trip out west and would like to hear some reviews, I'll make an entry at the end of places we have been to for sleeping, eating, and anything else I can't think of at the moment. Currently, I'm sitting in our room at a Holiday Inn in Colorado, Alex is sleeping, and it's only 9:35 p.m. We've been tent camping, but the need for wi-fi to e-mail freelance projects and electricity to juice up a few batteries brought us here. I didn't shower for almost four days. The layers of sweat, sunscreen, and Off were past due for being scrubbed off. We camped in ... read more

Here's some of the pictures from our hike where we saw: Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, Mosquito River, and some guy hanging out in the river wearing his jeans with a mile walk back to his car wearing said jeans. He did say it was worth it though, so hopefully he still felt that way by the time he got back to his car. We skipped Mosquito Falls. We were spent and took in about all we could handle of the "wow factor" for one day. A lot of these pictures you can't tell that there's a 150 - 200 foot drop from our trail to the water. While there is only one picture of the trail with the steep drop directly next to it, a lot of the hike was like that. The view was amazing, ... read more
