We had planned to get up early, but due to the lack of glass recycling at seven, we failed to rise before half ten. We went to MarcPol (marco polo) to buy food for a picnic and then went in search of a bus that could take us to the other side of the water. We arrived at the stadium market in the Prague district around noon which was evidently too late. We weren't however too late to get a feel for the place. It was the biggest stadium in Poland and held 70,000 but at important games it held 100,000. It is currently only used for this market (supposedly the biggest in Europe) but the Polish government wants to turn it back into a stadium again. The market was big, but had lots of similar ... read more

Sightseeing was to be the main aim of today. We were woken by the ruckus outside our window which is a phenomenal amount of glass being smashed into recycling bins. We set off in the general direction of the presidential palace. Despite having stumbled across it yesterday, we decided to start our sightseeing there so we could photo it. As we were walking down the royal way, we saw the police escorting an important looking car past us. Outside the presidential palace we saw a large group of soldiers lined up and knew something must be happening. We waited and waited, but they just stood there. Just as we were giving up we saw some movement and the band with the soldiers began to play; an important type person left the palace and got into a ... read more

We were woken up this morning by the two girls that seem to take forever to get up in the morning. It seems to be a reoccurring problem that we are amongst the last to go to bed and the first to get up. This means we are always dressing and undressing in the dark and trying to be as quiet as possible. We decided that today we would do a bit of shopping and generally get to know the city. Our umbrella was stolen last night at the bar which was a shame. Better the brolly than the pda though. After looking at a few very Polish shops Such as H+M and C+A we headed towards old town. It was around this point in the day that we decided we were hungry and wanted a ... read more

Today wasn't ever going to be much more than a day 0f traveling, but we didn't know just how long we'd be traveling for. The train for Warsaw left Vilnius around twelve, so after using up our leftover money in the supermarket we boarded our train. This journey was too a tiny station at the south of Lithuania called Sestokai which we had to go to in order to avoid Belarus. It was a pretty uneventful journey but I did finish my book which was fantastic. I'm now stuck with Rob's old book which is a bad crime thriller. The train from Sestokai was an hour and a half late, which was a devil because there was nothing to do. We kept ourselves amused by playing hopscotch and watching a suicidal ant. Fun. We finally arrived ... read more

We had a nice long sleep in again today and neither of us particularly wanted to get up. When we did get up we headed across the city to the bus and train stations to plan our escape route to Poland. Turns out whichever route we take we're spending the full day traveling. We went for dinner back at the veggie restaurant. Rob finally got his falafel, and I had a vegetable crumble, all very satisfying and yummy. During dinner we booked our hostel in Warsaw. We're going back to dorm life, but hopefully it'll be slightly livelier than Vilnius. After dinner we had a gentle meander around a square we hadn't seen before. We made a decision to try walking to the Coke Cola Plaza again. We didn't really have anything else to do, so ... read more

We woke early this morning, but easily fell asleep again until midday. The weather was overcast and didn't really inspire us to get up and do anything. When we did eventually get up neither of us was particularly optomistic about the day ahead. First stop was cathedral square to find the tile that the human peace chain ended at. We really couldn't find it anywhere, so after a quick look around the cathedral itself we headed up to the Gedimino tower. It was around then that we realised we were exhausted. By the time we'd climbed to the top we were shattered, this could be due to a lack of decent meals. This was duely noted. On the way down from the tower we saw the three crosses hill which is where three monks were executed ... read more

We woke early and eager to find a different hostel to move to. Tourist information suggested a hostel not far from the old town so we went and had a look. We decided it was better than Paupio our current hostel, so we took it. By twelve we were settled into our room and ready to get to know the better side of Vilnius. Instead of trawling round the city looking for lunch we settled for Double Coffee, a Starbucks type chain we had been avoiding but had been recommended in Riga. It wasn't as expected and had a good menu ranging from toasties to sushi, all at cheap prices. We both picked burgers, chicken and cheese, a cheese burger being a lump of fried cheese in a bun. We were pretty sick of typical "old ... read more

Today we got up and dressed in comfortable clothes in readiness for our journey to Vilnius. Breakfast was delicious again and appreciated more for it being our last. We went to catch the bus to Juodkrante but found that it only ran every other hour, so we had a rather pleasant hour reading by the lagoon in the sun. Juodkrante was rather fun. We left our bags in a random hotel and set off up witch's hill. This is a walk around a forest, but there are statues of witches, goblins etc scattered around. Some of the favourites included a seesaw, a slide and a really cool bench. After getting the ferry back to Klaipeda, we grabbed some food from a supermarket and headed for the train. Our train left Klaipeda at five and we arrived ... read more

We woke at nine and went straight down to breakfast. It was yummy. There was an array of food available, even the obligatory curd tart. We spent most of breakfast debating whether we'd be asked to pay, but we weren't. Yesterday we'd seen pictures of "The Lithuanian Sahara" so we decided to go on one of the set walks around that. By set walk it was more of a walk in the general direction of a set walk that probably existed. Once we were at the top of the hill the view was amazing; the dunes stretched out below and the lagoon on one side with the Baltic sea on the other side. At the top there was also a large sundial built in '95 but partially destroyed in '99. The dial was surrounded by a ... read more

We were the last to rise at half nine. A guy in our dorm told me that i'd been talking in my sleep, something about being lost and alone on an island, quite embarrassing, but I have heard other people talking in their sleep before. We packed and left early and walked the 2km to the ferry port. We got there just in time to catch a ferry over to the Curonian spit. The Curonian Spit is described in Lonely planet guide as heaven, well with the sun shining and the bus route we took, it seemed pretty heavenly. We pretty much decided on the bus that we wanted to stay an extra day, and that was before we saw the room. We walked in and instantly I thought either they'd given us the wrong room, ... read more
