Early this morning we were woken up by the most tremendous thunderstorm I ever heard in my life. The whole building shook with the thunder and the lightening was so bright and frequent. I was rather scared as the storm was right above and it was so loud. When we woke up again (Rob woke me up) it was rather bright so Rob got up and checked the time. It was just before nine and we had planned to sleep in till eleven. We got up leisurely and had a mixed breakfast of bread, cheese, yoghurt and fruit. We then slapped on the sun cream, as it was the hottest day so far, and went and caught the bus into town. We got off where everyone else seemed to, in the modern shopping area of the ... read more

Well we started this morning rather tired still from the night before. We hastily got dressed and left for nine. Eero drove us to the port and rather kindly helped us through checkout. The boat that took us was a catamaran and it was a pretty quick crossing, just under two hours. There was a proper passport control and our passports were scrutinised rather well. Leaving the port in Helsinki was rather fabulous. You walk alongside the water towards some of the most impressive buildings. It was about this point that we decided that both sets of our parents would love Helsinki. We stopped off at an old fish market and bought some baguettes. I had mozzarella, falafel and tomato and Rob had reindeer meat. He won't be getting presents this year. We went to the ... read more

Today we had no plans to do anything but we did have a well needed sleep in till eleven. We walked down to the local shop and bought some fruit, bread and juice. Eero came and joined us and we had a quick look around a Russian market before going home to eat breakfast. We then looked on the Internet for tickets to Helsinki and bought some for approximately twenty pounds for a return journey for the both of us. Rather cheap for a two hour journey. In the afternoon we went to the Tallinn open air museum and spent a few hours there. It was rather fascinating and we learned a bit more about Estonia’s endless history. Bits that I found the most interesting were the articles about the women in soviet occupation times. They ... read more

Not quite the cosy hideout we had in mind. After trying to get some sleep for a hour and a half we gave up. Every single person in the airport wanted us awake. They had a noisy crane thing, people dropped things, wheeled rattling trolleys past us etc. So instead we decided on a film. We switched on the pda, plugged in the headphones and started the film. Slowly bit by bit more people began to impede on our hide out. Around half three we were made to move by an airport official wanting to open a gate. Seeing as though there was no space anywhere we decided to actively wake ourselves up. We both freshened up in the bathroom and then got a pleasant surprise when we found out that checkout was open. We checked ... read more

Our day started bright and early with a 9am wake up.I say wake up, but neither of us really slept thanks to a wonderfully comfortable sofa bed. After a mad dash to tesco to buy rob a sleeping bag and to nationwide to change pin numbers we returned home for a quick breakfast and then went on our way. We arrived at newcastle airport with over an hour till check in. They let us check in early which we did whilst ken took pictures. we said goodbye to rob's parents and then went and got a pasty to eat. After We'd eaten we went through to departures and mooched around the shops. Boarding went very easily and we were on the plane before we knew it. The flight was ok, but there was a massive jolt ... read more
