What an amazing day including shades of Russian, Mexican and more mountain climbing. After a terrible sleep or non-sleep, I should write--une nuit blanche--as the French say, I rose up and drank my 2 cups of coffee and even with my snivelly nose and sneezing I actually didn't feel too badly and so I decided to haul my ass up the mountain with the crew, Diane and Rich, Dawna and Jim. Dawna and I tried for about 25 minutes this morning to catch a BRT train, but had to retreat and catch a bus after realizing that we were never going to get downtown in the morning's rush hour. The trains would stop but were jam-packed and nobody exiting at ALL and in the end we decided to "fugged-aboud-id" lol and we retreated and decided to ... read more

It is Tuesday morning, and here I sit, sniffling, because I god da code n by doze iz blugg'd. My body has betrayed me by hosting some crappy cold viruses. Sheesh ka-BOBS! I so hate having a summer cold. BAH! I was supposed to work last evening, but as the day progressed and I felt worse and worse I decided to stick around home and take to my bed. So there I was. WAH. LOL. Feeling sorry for myself but happy that we won a lot of tissue during our mid-autmumn festival gambling, so at least I can take care of the inevitable runny nose. LOL Luckily, my cash card worked yesterday, and I managed to make a large withdrawl. I literally marched straight over to the bus kiosk and I put 100 Yuan on my ... read more

I am so frustrated by the way this blog doesn't work sometimes. I had uploaded a Moon Cake video to be included with the Moon Cake blog...and everything indicated that it was attached....except that it ISN'T! ARGHHHHH. So here it is. I do apologize. I cannot seem to figure out WHY this blog acts so erratically. It just does. It makes me crazy. Sigh. Patience.........is really a four letter word, even though it's not, if you get my drift. ... read more

I just couldn't believe my eyes! I had heard shouting outside, and the volume of the voices was certainly escalating. I wanted to see what all that ruckus might be about...of course, DUH, the men involved were all speaking rapid Chinese (well, let's face it, even non-rapid Chinese is a problem, lol). Peering below from my shower window I saw two of the guards from our apartment complex arguing loudly with a young man. The shouting quickly escalated into shoving! OMG, was I really seeing/hearing this? WHACK!! Then the guards commenced with their nunchuks (no idea whether this is spelled properly, lol) on the poor fellow! The victim howled and sprinted the hell outta there, guards hot on his heels, slashing at the air with the wicked weapons! Yelling and hitting and fighting. Yikes!! I don't ... read more

I keep forgetting to add these photos of Mooncakes. Rich had gotten a fancy big box made up of a bunch of individually wrapped mooncakes from a student. He shared them with us because, well, honestly, moon cakes aren't all that yummy. LOL Of course, in the spirit of adventure and travel, I did eat a few mouthfuls here and there...but I must say, I have spit out most of those mouthfuls because mooncakes can taste hideous. They are beautiful to look at, but they are not so beautiful tasting in the mouth! LOL The best mooncake I had was at the restaurant celebration we had with the school staff, where we did the gambling and I won all the personal hygiene products...still wondering if there was a message there??? LOL At any rate, here are ... read more

My feet are sore. LOL Wednesday, I spent over 3 hours walking or hiking. Today, I bet I walked for at LEAST an hour and a half. The 3 amigas, as we like to call ourselves, headed out shortly before noon to meet Rich and Diane at the School. We decided to be brave today and do something that really scared us, just to prove that we were alive...we crossed our street at the crosswalk. Now, in Canada, that is not a big deal....here, it is a miracle to arrive alive on the other side. The cars/trucks/bicycles/buses/taxis, they don't slow down. You step tentatively out from the curb....they whiz past you while you slowly advance....frozen stiff in fear and when the coast is clear in each lane (there are 4 of them in each direction just ... read more

Monday night, 5 of us went to the massage parlour! *Gasp!* Yup, lol, now, I assure you that it was all quite innocent and just a place where one goes to get a deep tissue massage. Now, this is not a gentle Canadian massage, this is get into, and I do mean INTO yer muscles, ouch, ouch, ouch, a little tickly at times, 2 hours of total body massage. One even gets a head massage. The masseuse that I had was a young woman in her twenties who had the most amazingly strong hands! I couldn't believe it--she had musician hands. Well, DUH, I guess she has masseuse hands! LOL She got her fingers dug into places in my muscles I didn't even know existed. Yowza! My muscles were sore the next day, but I will go ... read more

Sorry to send you another email so quickly after my last entry, but I have been sorely frustrated by the workings, or NOT, as the case may be, with this blog at times. I had successfully uploaded the video to the last entry, or so it said, then published it without attaching it! ARGHHHH!! So, I am trying again. ... read more

I am sitting in my wonderful temperature controlled apartment, set to 24 degrees celsius and am drinking an ICE cold coke zero. Ahhhhhhh. Today, was a very good day. For one, I had the best meal ever, since I've arrived. Dawna and Joyce and I went to a Thai restaurant for our mid day main meal. We had sweet and sour pork, curried chicken, beef satays, mixed veggies, spring rolls and the bestest, BESTEST most thirst quenching lemony tea. Mmmmmmmmm. We ate like queens, and it was an "expensive" meal here, about 180 yuan or about $10/each Canadian. OMG, can you believe that? It's definately cheaper to eat out here. The restaurant was so clean, it had soap and handtowels for wiping up your hands after and yes the awful squat toilets, but hey, the other ... read more

Well, things have gotten a tiny bit hectic with school starting today--t was generally chaos at the school, and if I had any illusions about how the children's behaviour was going to be--rather, how wonderful I imagined, and the key word here is IMAGINED, it was going to be--let me be the first to inform you that those illusions have been completely and surely shattered by day's end. LOL Ay karumba, as Bart Simpson would lament. Kids are kids are kids. Period. No matter where they live. Especially boys. Thursday, was a day of rest. None of us ventured outside of the apartment. My stomach was really feeling off, and since I knew I didn't have THAT much beer with the gambling, I think it was the food. Who knows. Maybe I am poisoning myself with ... read more
