Last night were gambled! LOL, seriously, we were invited, the whole teaching staff, to a wonderful evening, hosted by our CHinese friends, to celebrate the autumn and the full moon. We ate a type of cake called a moon cake, a nice combination of nuts, seeds, and sweets, had a feast at which the food just kept on coming, and drank many, many toasts with Chinese beer (which is really good!). After eating and eating and toasting and toasting, it was time to bring on the gambling! Using a large red ceramic bowl, we tossed, in turn, a number of dice, of which the magic combination was 4 fours. Andy explained how this was significant, but honestly, in all the excitement, his explanation was lost on me! What we did enjoy, though, was taking turns passing ... read more

Yesterday was an interesting day! The three amigas, Dawna, Joyce and I decided to go exploring on our own, using the book MAGIC XIAMEN as an inspiration and also our maps. We figured that, armed with our transit passes and our three good brains, coupled with the generosity and helpfulness of the Chinese people, that no matter what, we would be ok. And we were. And we did get lost! Oh, how we got lost! LOL We rode the BRT which is the rapid bus transit system perched high above the city on concrete pillars. We started out by regular bus and took a bus that we had taken before, but which took us to a different drop off point. That should have been our first clue that things were not going to go as planned. ... read more

Today, felt like a normal day! Hallelujah! LMAO! The big yellow ball, I think it's called the sun, well, we haven't seen it in so long I've forgotten, shone, and we had a staff meeting and got our assignments. I am teaching 2 English classes, a dramam and a music. Cool. AND I get 3 days in a row off--Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and I work Thursday-Sunday. I like it. Rich and Diane, 2 teachers who are here for 10 months, and hail from Cambell River, on Vancouver Isand, BC, took Joyce and I on an adventure this afternoon. After having lunch together as a large group at Dad's Kitchen, we hopped on a bus and Rich, the human GPS, as Diane likes to call him, took us to the fabric market where we saw the most ... read more

Ok, so, yesterday, I needed a LOT of sleep. I came home in the afternoon, and crashed onto my bed at about 4 pm. I slept till midnight. Rose, showered, took out my contacts, (!! LOL) and took a trip to the kitchen as my stomach was rumbling. I turned on the light and saw it......! OMG. A cockroach ON THE COUNTERTOP!! EW, EW, EW!! I froze in terror and disgust. It scuttled away before I could even think about ending its miserable life. More bleach, was all I could think. Tomorrow, I will rebleach the counters. And all the dishes. And....does this mean, they could be in my cozy bed, my refuge from all this CHinese insanity? Aaarrrrrgggghhhhhh! That thought was the worst. Could the cockroaches come home in my suitcase? OMG, I cannot have ... read more

Today, at a nice downtown bookstore, I bought myself a small coffee press, some ground coffee beans and I am hoping to make myself a real cup of coffee tonight, if my stomach settles a bit. I am back at the apartment, after having gone to meet some of our new students at the school early this morning. I am thinking working conditions at home are not so bad right now! LOL The air conditioning in the whole office tower where our school is located is off today. Inside our classrooms it was 27 degrees and I am unsure what the relative humidity is, though it has to be at least 80%, so it felt much, much, hotter to me. We did manage to get the classroom cooled down to 25 degrees, but I gotta say, ... read more

Yesterday, I went on a most amazing excursion to Gulang Yu, a small island off Xiamen. Big surprise, we all arrived sopping wet. Like Spongebob. I've expanded with all the wet--oooooo expansion is never good! LMAO! But if I were SpongeBob Squarepants, I would have to kill myself if I had to be wet like that all the time.....course, he IS a sponge, but it's no wonder he and Patrick are such FREAKS! LOL Ah, I digress...back to Gulang Yu, this is, by far, the most intriguing place I have ever visted, and I don't think words are gonna cut it and so I'm gonna let the photographs and the video do the 'splainin', capiche? Many thanks to Elise for shepherding us all over there, and being our translater, when we needed someone to speak or ... read more

The sun has made an appearance! Hallelujah! You can't see it, but trust me, I AM doing a happy dance! LOL Also, it helps that I just spent 45 minutes skyping with Aiden and Harley and have an update on with what they have been up to. I am lying on my bed, so happy to have internet here in the apartment now, and thinking about how it is so interesting that I have the temperature on my room air conditioning set to 25 degrees celsius and am feeling that this is cool. !!! Did you just fall over? Oh, sorry. LOL, Yes, this is me...what a shocker, eh? Yup, this feels cool. I actually sleep with it about 23 Celsius and stay under my quilt all night long feeling good. No, really! I can hardly ... read more

Ni hao. I have awoken very early this morning. Seems my body is not to be fooled. It knows that way back home, in the province of Manitoba, it is actually 9 in the evening, and why are you sleeping, dammit? LOL I am writing as I sit in my balconyish type alcove off my bedroom. It is a large window with an amazingly large ledge and I have it open to the early morning air. There are insects and birds singing. And, much to my amazement, a rooster crowed and crowed his morning greeting to me. I do believe that is the first time in my life I have ever been greeted in the morning by a rooster. For me it was a magical moment. As I gaze across at the 11 story apartment directly ... read more

The rain is steady this morning, and at times, absolutely pouring onto the streets. When I rose, very early this morning, after having crashed heavily and slept for 9 straight hours, one of the first sounds that greeted me was that of someone's car alarm! LOL There were several that blasted into the early morning. That and the rain, and me at my computer, trying to straighten out the mess the upload made of the pictures.....lol, oh well. What else have I got to do? I gotta say, I am so hungry, and there's not a pizza joint in sight, or even a McDonalds. OMG, I would even eat there. I was a bit afraid to go wandering in the dark last night, and so tired I opted for blogging and bed. And I may go ... read more

I made it to Xiamen, China today at about 10:00 a.m. local time. I am beat. I was met at the airport by Andy, one of the employees with Tianjiao, with a sign with my name on it, and a huge bouquet of the most beautiful and fragrant flowers! I am tonight, in a hotel called the Home Inn while my apartment is being prepared. I am so tired! I have slept in small fragments, here and there. I slept a bit on the long plane ride to Beijing and a bit on the short one to Xiamen. I stayed up since I got here, it is somewhere around 7ish in the evening, on Monday the 29th, and I see by the clock on my little notebook here it says it's 2:29 am back home . ... read more
