October 4, 2009 The Bloggers without borders are back in the USA!!! We left our hotel at 7:30am in order to insure a spot on the 10:30 ferry. When we got to the dock at 7:45 there were already people in line. The dock staff told us the crossing had been sold out for 6 days! He assured us we’d get on. The crossing takes about 90 minutes…I sit and read, Bill roams around checking to see if the crew needs any help running the ship…you know, maybe a tip or two on how HE would steer it into the dock!!! After landing in Port Angeles, Washington we took off in search of a town called Forks. If any of you are “Twilight” fans, you know this is the town where some of the movie was ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Kamloops October 2nd 2009

October 2, 2009 Today we drove most of the day. We left the cabin in Johnston Canyon at about 9am. The road out of Banff and into British Columbia was difficult because it started to snow!!! But we carried on…stopped in a small town and ate lunch (the afore mentioned ham sandwiches) in the car! I was disappointed that we couldn’t see the views in B.C. but the fog was so thick that all the peaks were hidden. We arrived at Kamloops B.C. at about 3:30pm. Somewhere along the way the time changed again and we are now 3 hours behind Boston time…It’s getting harder and harder to keep things straight! This morning while getting ready to leave, Donna told us this story. She got up during the night and sat in the living room of ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park October 1st 2009

October 1, 2009 A quiet day that began with a ride to the town of Banff; another beautiful trip with mountain views that left us breathless. The town reminded us of Europe…quaint shops lining streets that sit at the base of mountains that stand like giant sentries…but my goodness how expensive things were. Donna and I had an interesting experience in the grocery store. We were trying to buy a pound of ham to make sandwiches for our lunch on the road tomorrow… (Being frugal) but everything here is in metric and being the ugly Americans that we are…we don’t know what any signs related to size or weight mean. With our first try, we received enough ham to make a sandwich for a mouse… (Could the meat lady not see my size!!)? With the second ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Lake Louise September 30th 2009

September 30, 2009 Where the heck are the bear? Today, after breakfast, we left for a ride up to Lake Louise. We’ve said in the past that we all naturally prefer the US to Canada and how happy we were to be back in the states earlier in the trip…but we all agreed; the Canadian Rockies out do the American Rockies, hands down! These mountains are higher, deeper and grander than any we’ve seen before! They seem to be everywhere. At any given point, we were surrounded on three sides by incredible vistas. And arriving at Lake Louise, we were simply amazed at the picture postcard view! (But still no bear!) We moved further up the mountain to Lake Moraine which was also quite beautiful but bitter cold with a temperature of 40 degrees and a ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park September 29th 2009

September 29, 2009 From The Bloggers Without Borders!!!!!! “Rocky Mountain High”! After driving all day we arrived at our destination in Banff National Park. The ride from Shelby to the border was about 40 miles. The Canadian border guard looked like a 6 year old with a pony tail but she was a feisty one…not at all funny like our friend from the U.S. border who called us hippies. I don’t know why but as soon as we approach these border crossings, I immediately feel like some sort of criminal…guilty of some infraction. Maybe we ARE carrying weapons or illegal drugs! Maybe we DO intend to commit a crime while we are vacationing here…heck, maybe Whitey Bulger IS in the back of our van (although frankly he’d be hard pressed to fit!). During the ride we ... read more

North America » United States » Montana September 29th 2009

September 28, 2009 Today we drove all day up through northern Montana to a town called Shelby. It was a beautiful drive through miles and miles of farm land. On a billboard entering one of the small towns was a quote, “from the mountains to the prairies”…so accurate! Earlier in the day we had stopped at a cigar store outside of Livingston. A man sold cigars right out of his home. He turned out to be quite a character. His family came over on the Mayflower and they had a town in Massachusetts named after them…Brewster! He told John that there had been a large cigar factory in the town but after World War Two, the soldiers all came back smoking cigarettes so the company closed. This man re-opened it and now runs the business from ... read more

September 27, 2009 Well we made it to Old Faithful…Here’s what happened. We all hoped and prayed all night that the road to Old Faithful would be open this morning…and it was. This meant that we could get to see her after driving one and a half hours…which we did. On the way, we kept seeing all of these interesting sights but we didn’t stop because our plan was to get to Old Faithful before the road was closed and then have a leisurely ride back, catching all the other areas. We got to Old Faithful just as she went off…what a thrill!!! There was a huge crowd and everyone was amazed! We watched a short film and were about to do some exploring when one of the rangers announced that they had just closed the ... read more

September 26, 2009 “Take off that Ranger hat so I can slap you across the face.” Today was somewhat disappointing….the fire in Yellowstone continues and the road to Old Faithful is closed. To see it we would have to drive around the park, the northern route, to get there. This would take three and a half hours, one way! We decided to drive north to a town called Livingston, a place Anthony Bourdain had done a show on. We were hoping to first go to Little Big Horn and hit Livingston on the way back. After driving about an hour we realized that Little Big Horn was another two hours! We went directly to Livingston instead. We visited a little restaurant named Pinky’s that Bourdain had highlighted. Donna recognized the owner right away from the show ... read more

September 25, 2009 Fire! Fire! Fire! Yesterday as we crossed through Teton Pass there was a fire that almost obstructed our view of the Tetons. When we left our cabin in Driggs Idaho today, we were hoping for a better view but the fire had left a haze that continued to hide some of the mountains. We traveled through Teton National Park and saw amazing scenery, stopping for lunch at Jackson Lake…fluffernutters again! We entered Yellowstone at the South entrance…so exciting! The ranger at the gate told us that the bridge we needed to take to get to our final destination for the day, Gardiner Montana, was closed for renovations. We changed our route and as we approached the new road we were to take, there was a big roadblock and rangers were telling people to ... read more

North America » United States September 25th 2009

September 24, 2009 Today is a driving day so I wanted to take a minute to record a few things. As I mentioned, we stayed in a town called Ten Sleep last night. The hotel was owned by a woman who had just bought it and was planning many renovations. She’s moved there to be near her sons, one of whom is a Rancher…that’s right, like in a John Wayne movie…there’s a lot of John Wayne-like scenery and people….but I digress. I wanted to tell how Ten Sleep got its name. Back in the days of Indians there were several Indian winter encampments surrounding the town. Each was equidistant from the town. The Indians measured distances by how many nights, or “sleeps” it would take to get from one place to another. Each of the encampments ... read more
