It’s an early start as we join villagers for a 3 hour train ride to the small town of Bassi. It’s times like these that I find most fascinating. As the train pulls up and everyone impatiently bundles there way onto the carriages you somehow scramble through the sea of people to find a spare couple of feet to yourself. There’s no luxury on these trains. You’re luck if you’re able to find a wooden seat at the most however there’s something captivating and intriguing about it all. It’s here that you can really interact with the locals and experience everyday life in India. There’s so many interesting people that I find myself staring at and can’t help but grab my camera and snap away at the locals. Although there doesn’t seem to be much order ... read more

Crazy ass drivers

We travelled through some of the most remote and magical villages and farmland to reach Bundi city (Blue City) in Eastern Rajasthan. I’m busy capturing photos of the locals as our crazy driver recklessly speeds through some of the largest pot holes known to man so it’s no surprise when we suddenly hear a humongous bang as one of the rear tires burst and our 4x4 comes to a skidding halt. I swear driving in these areas is like something out of an Ace Ventura movie as I bounce here there and everywhere trying to hold on for dear life. Luckily this happens only 15 minutes into our journey before we're fully into no mans land where we'd have been waiting hours for a replacement car to arrive. Thank god it wasn't long before we're back ... read more

Today was spent at Ranthambhore National Park one of the original project tiger reserves. It’s a beautiful park full of lakes, scrublands and ruined palaces. Unfortunately we weren’t lucky enough to see any tigers that day but it was still well worth the trip. I definitely prefer rural life in India rather than the hot and crowded city streets. ... read more

It was back to the city today as we headed to the ‘Pink City’ of Paipur. After visiting Amber Red Palace we stopped off at a local shop where they produced carpets of all descriptions…Dad you’d have loved this place! They showed us how they’re made and I was surprised to hear it can take anything from 3 to 9 months to produce a high quality rug by hand. Once they finally got the picture I was in no position to splash out and buy one they eventually let us go. Once rested we took ourselves off to watch a Bollywood movie at a fabulous theatre house in town. Extremely tacky but great fun. ... read more

Another early start as we made our way by local coach to the middle of rural Rajasthan where we stayed in a former fort now converted into a beautiful heritage hotel. Sitting back window wide open allowing the breeze to cool me down as the morning heat shines in. I drown out the noise of the locals and continuous beeping from the roads by plugging in my music and loosing myself as I gazed into the fields of rural India. Amongst them were beautiful women dressed in gorgeous colourful saris tending to the crops whilst men worked on construction sites or in the roadside stalls. Children ran free and happy as they played on the street or bathed by the lakes. I did however snap back into reality on several occasions when our crazy coach driver ... read more

A morning of sight seeing in the deserted Mughal kingdom of Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km from Agra was followed by a visit to the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary now home to more than 400 species of birds. It was great to get away from the hustle and bustle of the dirty cities and spend some time in a more rural environment. The fresh air was so inviting and the calmness of nature therapeutic. ... read more

We arrived in Agra where we spend the morning at Agra’s Red Fort. The outer structure just remains but it’s clear from the descriptions given that there was vast amounts of money, jewels and rich materials present for the king and his people. The detail on the building is amazing. The long awaited afternoon soon came round and it was time to see one of the worlds most instantly recognisable monuments - the Taj Mahal. It didn't disappoint! ... read more

Our first official day was spent in Old Delhi. We took the surprisingly modern Metro across town. I was shocked at how advanced it was. Security was tighter than England and they had everything from the oyster card system to air conditioned carriages. We visited one of Delhi’s oldest mosque’s and joined the crowds to walk in the bazaars of the old city, immersing in the noise and smells of the crowded narrow streets and alleys where people went about their everyday lives selling everything from silver, copper, brass and spices. Amazingly animals such as cows, goats, dogs and even the occasional monkey wandered the streets unfased by hordes of people and vehicles. It was bizarre to see areas of progression and wealth alongside streets full of homeless families and huge amounts of litter. Sadly many ... read more

I've decide to get into the swing of things and during my stay in India I was keen to fit in as much as possible. I headed to the local market in search for a caftan (a traditional Indian top). Once again I’m leaped on instantly but keep my cool and refuse to be bullied into buying the first thing I see. I finally decide on one at the bank breaking price of 200 rupees around £2.80. Oh how I’ve so over packed, apparently the best is sill yet to come! So evening arrived and it was time to meet the others. Usually there’s a group of around 10 or 12. We only had 5 of us. 6 including our lovely tour guide. The up side was the immediate bond that’s formed creating a small family ... read more

After a hassle free flight I’m dropped off at a pleasant hotel in New Delhi where I have the following 24hrs alone before meeting up with the group I’m spending the next 2 weeks with. The half hour journey from the airport already gives me a glimpse of what’s to come and my bodies pumping with adrenaline. The vast number of people and cars roaming the streets in the most chaotic manor, horns honking for no particular reason so load my ears feel as if there about to drop off. The people and buildings have so much character and the colours beaming from women’s saris, fruit & spice stalls and the vast numbers of markets is so eye catching. The midday heat is unbelievable and immediately drains you of any energy that still remains. It seems ... read more
