Kakadu National Park First stop for the day was Mary River Roadhouse, on the way into the national park – the bloke running the information here was very helpful giving us plenty of maps, and detail of where to fish and which parts of the park were open. Unfortunately as the wet season has been so big (the biggest wet on record), most of Kakadu is still closed due to water levels and large sightings of saltwater crocs, however he still managed to point out some places on the map, as well as ‘local’ spots which we enjoyed travelling through. Only 6km north of the roadhouse, we visited ‘The Rock Hole’, another little waterfall and swimming area. Not far from here, we set up camp at Kambolgie campground, leaving the Jayco chained to a tree ... read more

Nitmiluk National Park As the sun rises to the East, it was a late start the drive from Kununurra towards Nitmiluk (Katherine) National Park. We stayed 58km west of the township of Katherine at a freecamp – Vince Connoly Crossing, here we waited for the Triton’s oil to cool before doing an oil and filter change as the odometer now reads over 105,000km. The following morning we set off for Katherine, fuelling up at Caltex (25.2L @ 158.9c/L) – just enough to get us back from Nitmiluk gorge. The gorge seemed to span as far as the eye could see, as we hiked for what seemed like hours along the ridge and towards the Southern Rockhole. Here we found a nice waterfall and tranquil waters which were so inviting after our long walk. Lucky this ... read more

Kununurra We had decided to soak up Jenny’s hospitality and stay in Kununurra for a few days, finding the weekend a perfect opportunity to go for a drive with Jenny and her boyfriend Shane. We headed towards Wyndham, visiting The Grotto – another beautiful swimming hole that held many small black bream and a couple of water monitors, with a rope swing which Lachie made good use of. Had a Barra burger and beer at the Wyndham Pub before making the steep drive to 5 rivers lookout. Over the next couple of days we explored the region, enjoying the cool waters at Valentine Springs and Black Rock Pool, as well as walking up Kelly’s Knob to enjoy Kununurra’s sunset over the town and local farms in the distance. Besides stocking up on food at the ... read more

Broome to Kununurra We started off this segment of our trip at the fuel bowser again – Broome Caltex – 85.8L @ 161.9c/L. It didn’t seem far down the bitumen and we had already reached Derby, where we discovered a boab prison tree used prior to 1887 to hold captive Aboriginal people until a boat could be arranged for slavery in the pearling industry. Nearby we found Myall’s bore and cattle trough with a fully functional windmill to supply drinking water. After having a chat with the tourist information centre, we found out that Derby has the largest fluctuating tidal waters in Australia – on that particular day varying from 2 to 12 meters. As we arrived at the jetty, it appeared to be on the change of tides, with the current coming in at ... read more

Karijini to Cape Leveque and Broome The weather over the last few days has been predicted to be a bit wet and overcast, making some of the gorge walks in Karijini susceptible to flash flooding. We decided to check out the highlights of Port Hedland (which was not much), before continuing on to Broome. On the drive in to Port Hedland we passed many mine sites run by Rio Tinto, one in particular was by the side of the road – a large Salt evaporation pond (and a massive pile of salt!). Nearby, we found another Rio Tinto mine with machinery so large that the blades appeared about the same length as our ute! It was a very quick stop in Port Hedland, fuelling up at Shell – 91.46L @ 162.9c/L, noticing some of the locals ... read more

Cape Range to Karijini The coastal winds have been picking up the past few nights, so we decided to move on to a more central Western Australian location. We started our drive into town at Exmouth early, fuelling up at Caltex – 91.2L @ 182.8c/L. From here, it was a long drive with many cattle roadkill, one every seventy kilometres or so! The road trains don’t even seem to break for upcoming herds of cattle. After getting more fuel at Paraburdoo (just enough to get us to Tom Price) – 9.1L @ 164.9c/L, we drove on towards a supermarket and yet another visitor centre to get some more maps and local knowledge on Karijini National Park. Fuelled up all our tanks at Shell (Tom Price) – 95.2L @164.9c/L and headed into the National Park to ... read more

Exmouth and Cape Range(Ningaloo Reef) We had camped at New Beach just south of Carnarvon, where we checked out another 1 mile jetty (a few hundred metres shorter than Busselton’s). We headed to Woolworths to stock up on food, and fuel at Caltex -98.3L @ 166.0c/L and decided to continue north along the coast. Although the Easter long weekend had come and gone, school holidays seemed to fill every resort throughout the Coral Bay and Exmouth area. Being a bit late to get into the National Park to camp, we stayed at Yardie Homestead Caravan Park $30/powered site, which enabled us to power all our batteries and charge up the camera before spending 5 nights out in Cape Range National Park. We woke up at sparrowfart and waited in line at the Ranger’s station to ... read more

Our Easter Travels Perth to Carnarvon Easter Friday On our drive north amongst all the city slickers who were trying to escape the hustle and bustle for Easter, we decided to stop near Cervantes at Nambung National Park to see the amazing Pinnacles. Hundreds of these sand and limestone formations could be found within this desert landscape despite its’ coastal location. We continued along the coast passing Jurien Bay and Coolimba. The roads were packed with many Aussies and tourists in a rush to get somewhere special this weekend, so to avoid the coastal cities and the sound of generators running all night, we headed to a place just north of Port Denison – here we set up camp at Dongara East Rest Stop for the evening. Easter Saturday We made an early start setting ... read more

Fremantle to Perth and around We arrived and set up at a Big 4 14km from the city of Perth, cheaper than what we thought - $38 powered site/night. The past few days we’ve explored the Perth Mint, Rottnest Island, Kings Park and some more amazing beaches. Although we weren’t allowed to take photos inside the Mint, we did get to find out what our weight was worth in gold – Lach only being slightly more valuable than Sheree, having a value of around @ 2.5million dollars! We entered the ‘gold room’ where there were multiple set gold bars, as well as nuggets on the walls and tables for display. Although there were only 4 visible cameras in this area, the guide assured us there were over 100 hidden ones... this was NOT the time ... read more

Margaret River to Fremantle & around Along our journey up the western coast from Margaret River, we stopped at Busselton to check out the longest wooden piled jetty in the southern hemisphere. It was an amazing 1840 metres in length, now used only for recreation. We explored the beach and its surrounds for a few hours, then continued on to Honeymoon Pool after fuelling up at Busselton Caltex – 81.6L @ 1.489 with a docket. This little camping spot was a gem - $14 unpowered for the night, not far from Wellington Dam; with a beautiful clear stream right in front of our camp. It reminded us so much of the river at Bright – only several degrees warmer in the evening! The next couple of days we spent exploring more of the coast, including Mash ... read more
