Nitmiluk National Park

As the sun rises to the East, it was a late start the drive from Kununurra towards Nitmiluk (Katherine) National Park. We stayed 58km west of the township of Katherine at a freecamp – Vince Connoly Crossing, here we waited for the Triton’s oil to cool before doing an oil and filter change as the odometer now reads over 105,000km. The following morning we set off for Katherine, fuelling up at Caltex (25.2L @ 158.9c/L) – just enough to get us back from Nitmiluk gorge.
The gorge seemed to span as far as the eye could see, as we hiked for what seemed like hours along the ridge and towards the Southern Rockhole. Here we found a nice waterfall and tranquil waters which were so inviting after our long walk. Lucky this area was elevated – so no saltwater crocs here!
We returned to Katherine to fuel up again (at Shell – 87.3L@ 151.9c/L), then drove towards Edith Falls where we camped for only $9pp/pn enjoying a hot shower after setting up camp.
It was an early start the morning we headed on a walk towards Sweetwater Pool which took around 2 hours to get to the destination that boasted a large lagoon area where we were certain freshwater crocs were inhabiting. Just a few hundred metres further upstream we came to a safer more risen waterfall region where the water was crystal clear and flowing along some rapids.
On our walk back to camp we stopped at Edith Falls which seemed to be very popular amongst wicked van backpackers – being only 2km return from the carpark.
After a quick swim underneath the waterfall we returned to enjoy a nice quiet and generator-free camp in the Nitmiluk National Park.
