Today was the trip to above the Arctic Circle!! A trip I have been wanting to make since I was in Alaska when in the Air Force. Had an opportunity then to go above the Arctic Circle, but could not make the trip then. We traveled the Dalton Highway, also known as "The Haul Road". This is the road featured in "Ice Road Truckers". Much of the road I recognized from the show without the ice and sneaux :-). This was around a 400 mile round trip from North Pole, AK. The road was rough, but found it to be not as bad as others had said. No windshield dings, no flat tires, no major issues. There were a lot of frost heaves, gravel, and clay/dirt stretches. The bridge over the Yukon River was very interesting. ... read more

Started the day with sleeping in and then enjoying a breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, and biscuits. Then a visit to Santa's House located next to the RV park. Following that a trip to Wal-Mart in Fairbanks. When we returned we had dinner of hotdogs, coleslaw, chips, and chili with dessert of ice cream.... read more

We loaded up and headed to North Pole today. On the way we did see another moose and red fox. Both were on the move and did not take the time to pose for a photo. We stopped at the Delta Meat Market and sampled elk sausage, buffalo sausage, and other. We bought some ground buffalo to make some "finger food" one night. We stopped in Delta Junction, the northern end of the Alcan Highway for some photo's. Arrived at SantaLand RV Park in North Pole. Really enjoy this park, it has a Santa theme complete with a HUGE Santa at the front, each street name after reindeer, each hookup has a sneauxman, elves abound around the park, and the trees are trimmed with lights. The park is next door to Santa's summer home here in ... read more

Today we decided to ride up to Chicken, AK on the way to the Top of the World Highway. Can go no further than Chicken due to a storm washed out the road just past Chicken. Chicken is interesting - population 5 - 6 year round and swells to a whopping 25 - 30 during the summer months. The entire town consists of a General Store, a Bar, and a restuarant, two campgrounds, and a gold dredge of past years. 62 miles from the intersection of the Alaska Highway to Chicken and all along the way are each of those 62 miles and little else. When we got back to the campground, we went over to the pavillion to work on blog, listen to some country, bluegrass, and gospel music. We also tried the pancake toss ... read more

Went to the gift shops and came back to the RV park as I (Shelby T) got a little nauseated. All got better and we had a WONDERFUL steak dinner (cooked on the "Smokey Joe")with salad and baked potato at our motorhome. Dessert was ice cream with OREO cookies. Aleta was taking pictures without a flash at 12:00PM outside the motorhome. Plans are to ride to Chicken, AK tomorrow.... read more

Trip was going fine until we got to Haines Junction then the road turned into the "Road to Hell". Twelve miles per hour was, at times; to fast. Frost heaves - areas where the ground had frozen and thawed causes "whop-de-doo" like road surface. Arrived in Tok, staying at the Sourdough Campground for the next three days until 7/15/2010. Jack and Aleta tried the "pancake" toss to win breakfast, but had to eat the same as Barbara and I as they did not put the pancake in the bucket. :-) For dinner, had Jack's chilli and taco chips at Barbara & Jack's.... read more

Still at Toad River, but took a road trip today of around 70 - 80 miles on up the Alcan Highway. We visited Muncho Lake which has an absolutely beautiful blue jade color caused by almost flour fine particles left from the glaciers which are suspended in the water. I don't know if the photos will do it justice. We also traveled on up to Liard Hot Springs and took a dip in the upper most pool. It was definitely hot to me, but Aleta says not so hot :-). The scenery along the way was great. Along the way up, I noticed smoke coming from Jack's truck and pulled over about the same time Jack was signaling to stop. We quickly discovered that a hose to the transmission pump was loose, tightened it and went ... read more

Traveled on to Toad River. One thing I have noticed, each small community such as Toad River has their own electricity generator to power the small community. Got to the park early, short pull today as the last two days have been in excess of 450 miles and need a little rest. Got settled in had dinner of Hamburger Helper, biscuits, and baby lima beans prepared by Aleta and Jack. Park has free firewood, so we built a fire in the fire ring at the site. While sitting out by the fire and looking at the lake/marsh we saw one moose which by the time we went in had became three moose. One cow, one yearling, and one small bull. The bull had a very small rack. They were to far away to get good photos ... read more

Got to Fort St. John today for Jack to get the windshield "star" repaired. After a bit of downtown driving we arrived at Peace Glass where the guys that do the repair were at lunch. We parked in their parking lot and had our lunch also. The guy who repaired the "star" was very friendly and informative. Cost of repair = $25.00. We arrived at Fort Nelson, and paid $4.63 per gallon for gas. The nice gentlemen at the Husky gas station was very friendly to both Jack and myself as the pump was running. He fancied himself as a stand up comedian and wasn't really all that bad :-). We paid the bill and moved on down the road a bit to the Triple "G" Campground for the night. Dinner at Jack and Barbara's of ... read more
