Jordon - Petra Revisited Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra
Day 20 I firstly must apologise to those of you following our blog, my spelling at times has not been very good. My only excuse is that I am usually putting up the daily blog at the end of the day and I am tired after a long day. Also the internet here is a little bit temperamental. I am starting this blog with a few things that have happened to us other than our travels. I was in the room when housekeeping came in to do their work for the day. I asked them to put two sheets on the [View Full Entry]

Day 19 saw us up bright and early and at breakfast at 6.30am. We had to meet Issar in the Foyer of the hotel at 7.30am. The reason for the early start was to miss all the tourists!! Of course we are not tourists!!!! We met our Petra guide Mahmood and set off for the sites of Petra. Mahmood was an excellent guide and we enjoyed his company. The first hiccup was that a horse ride was organised for us, and we thought that we would be going in a horse and buggy but no, it was to be on a [View Full Entry]

Jordon - Kings Highway Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra
Day 18 saw us travelling down the Kings Highway from the Dead Sea to Petra. On Chelle’s blog earlier on this year she commented that this day was a huge day and we can only heartily agree. We are both exhausted, we left the Dead Sea at 9am and arrived in Petra at 5.30pm. Our first stop was at Mt Nebo. The place where Moses was buried and where he showed his people the Promised Land. I had a little incident at the toilets at Mt Nebo. I was in the toilet when someone tried to come in. I squealed and [View Full Entry]

Day 17 I forgot to write yesterday that when we arrived back to our hotel we were stopped by a very nice gentleman who insisted that we come into the restaurant where lunch is served. We had just had our Starbucks so said, ‘that we had, had our lunch,’ but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. I ended up being given a dessert to taste. It was a traditional Jordanian dessert. I have to say that it was delicious and it was free!!!!!!! Issa picked us up at 8.30 this morning and we set of for the Jordan River and [View Full Entry]

Jordon - Ajlun Castle Middle East » Jordan » North » Jerash
Day 16 saw us in the afternoon travel to Ajlun. Issa our driver suggested that for an extra 30 Dinars it would be worth our while to go and visit the Islamic Castle of Ajlun. We readily agreed and so we were taken on a very interesting drive through the countryside to Ajlun. Some of the driving through the townships was very interesting, as nobody stayed on the correct side of the road, they just drove where they liked!!! Add to this men walking all over the road, and you had quite a colourful situation to view. Graham took some really [View Full Entry]

Jordon - Jerash Middle East » Jordan » North » Jerash
Day 16 Before I start today’s blog, I must record an incident that happened on our flight from Frankfurt to Amman. We had a wonderful steward and he looked after us so well and he was very caring. He was however we think just a ‘little gay’ Graham decided to lie down and have a sleep. I looked across at Graham to see our steward wrapping Graham in a blanket and patting him on the bottom. Just before landing Graham came back from the toilet with a big grin on his face and told me that our steward was sitting down [View Full Entry]

Jordon - Amman Middle East » Jordan » North » Amman
Day 15 saw us arrive into Amman Jordan from Brussels and Frankfurt at 2am on 11.12.08. We had a very interesting drive to the Brussels Airport but if we had be leaving today we would have had snow and probably would still be at the farm. We heard this morning that Frankfurt Airport was closed today with snow. Lucky escape for us I think!!! Arriving into Amman was very interesting. We were met by our Official from the Tour Company who was to look after us and help us get our Visa’s for Jordan. He was great, but we had to [View Full Entry]

Frankfurt  Europe » Germany
Day 14 dawned dark dull and freezing cold as is usual in the north west of Belgium. I really could not get used to the fact that it was still dark at 9 o’clock in the morning, as it was this morning. I guess each day it gets darker as they head for the shortest day. Graham went off for a tour of the farm and all the war time debris. He said “it was amazing”. The farm was under German control for the duration of the war. He saw Grenades, Gas Bombs, Shells, Rifles, Bayonets and Sabres. It has all [View Full Entry]

Looking out the window from the lounge at Brussels Airport

Day 13 arrived freezing cold, I really mean freezing cold. I am wearing so many clothes that I look like a little roly poly!!! In fact I was wearing two coats today as well as four layers of clothes. Our hostess turns off the heating at eleven o’clock at night and then during the day to save power. I can understand this but today we asked if she would leave the heating on as it is just so miserable. We visited the Memorial Museum at Passchendaele this morning, and spent three hours there. We were very lucky as Charlotte our hostess [View Full Entry]

Menen Gate Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Ypres
Tonight we went across to Ieper to the Menen Gate to hear the Last Post played at 8 o’clock. Every night since the end of the 1st World War the Last Post has been played, except when the Germans stopped the playing of the Last Post during the 2nd World War. A British Army Base took over and played the Last Post every night from 1940 to 1945. When the 2nd World War finished the Last Post once again was played at the Menen Gate and has played every night since. We went into Ieper to have dinner earlier in the [View Full Entry]
