Up bright and early for the 300km or so drive to Calgary for our flight to Montreal. Tim didn’t sleep so well last night, too much afternoon napping and maybe going to the gym late didn’t help so he had a sleep for most of the trip, don’t worry, Sam driving! We use the self check-in machines (there is no other option here) and it prints everything, boarding passes and baggage tags. All we then have to do is take our luggage to the counter and hand it over - they don’t even weight it, if only we knew! We decide to hire a car when we get to Montreal as we have some down time there and I think it will be really exciting to explore as Quebec’s supposed to be such an old traditional ... read more

After breakfast we walked to the lake with the intentions of canoeing but it was $35 for just half an hour, with it being so huge, half hour wasn’t going to get you far! Our hotel has an ex guide dog that you can walk, really cool idea but unfortunately for us he has weekends off - probably a good thing, might have been hard to smuggle him into our room! LAKE MORRAINE So it was ‘off to the Volvo’! We drove to Lake Morraine (just 15km from lake Louise) along with the rest of Canada it seems as the car park was beyond full, people were parking up to 3kms away. Tim dropped me off (still a dashing husband!) and then had to park the car about 500metres up the road, he did really well ... read more

Woke up looking forward to another awesome day in Canada - we are white water rafting the Kicking Horse route and then going to Lake Louise to stay at the famous Fairmont Chateau, the hotel that is always used in the postcards. So we got up early (6am, way too early for Tim) to check out of our hotel and then drive to the rafting place. Because it was so early we had a really good run (so much for the roadworks holding us up as and could have slept in for another hour - sorry Tim! Went to the very exotic McDonalds for breaky on the run, I think it was too early for the guy working there too, because he was none too please when I asked for a Bacon and Egg McMuffin minus ... read more

Got picked up first thing in morning in a really nice van by Berett. There is only the two of us so we are pretty happy. The van is really cool, the sliding doors in the back can be opened and closed just by pressing a button on the wall inside, or even better, can be opened using the door remote! I know, I am easily impressed! We were meant to go to Lake Louise as part of our tour, but because we were going there tomorrow he substituted that for a couple of extra lakes. The advantage of not having to share your tour with 45 other people (insert smiley face here!). SPIRAL TUNNELS First stop is the Spiral Tunnels. We went through here on the Rocky Mountaineer, so it is great to see it ... read more

We had breakfast in the restaurant next door to the hotel. All the waitresses were Aussies, but not the friendly type unfortunately, at least not to fellow Aussies. Walked around town up and down the main street in the morning, lots and lots and lots of souvenier shops. Went hunting for a beanie for me because it’s not exactly warm and I’m a pussy as you all know when it’s less than 35 degrees! Easier said than done because of my pin head, there are heaps of really cool kids animal beanies though, so I have loads of fun trying them all on! Drove to Columbian Icefields to see the glaciers, or more precisely the Athabasca Ice Glacier. The drive is, as we have now come to expect, like driving through a postcard. Beautiful mountains, with ... read more

Today we are driving to Banff, but have to do a post home first. So after checking out we look up post offices in Carmen the Garmin. The first was closed down and had been for years, the second was a postal sorting depot, but yay, third time lucky, if it was closed/moved/gone to lunch, we were prepared to dump it with a ‘please post this note. Because we just couldn’t do this anymore! So off we go to Banff, left about 11am, it’s so very scenic, much better than the Garden Route in South Africa. It starts off vary flat with a lot of agricultural areas then it turned more mountainous with snow and glaciers everywhere you looked. Don’t get me wrong, the Garden Route was really nice and we loved every minute of it, ... read more

After breakfast we caught the train to Calgary’s tiny little skytower. It looked so much bigger in the pictures… But back when it was built it would’ve been the tallest thing around, unfortunately technology and engineering took over and compared the buildings around it, it is kind of dwarfed in perspective. But regardless of it’s lack of height we still had an incredible view of Calgary. It is such a beautiful green city. There was also a glass floor which looked pretty neat looking straight down. Had lunch at cool restaurant, really high ceilings. Looked old world but felt modern. It was called Br & (cool way of saying Brand…) We caught the train and then a bus to pick up our hire car from airport - look out Canada! They upgraded us to a Volvo ... read more

Had breaky in hotel, very basic but they had do it yourself waffle makers! And they were delicious! Tim went to use bathroom in foyer and walked straight back out because they were disgusting, went into another one, came straight back out and asked for the room key to go back upstairs to use ours. Must be pretty bad when even a guy won’t use it!! Caught the train to Stampede, not far to walk from the hotel to train station. Lots of cowboy hats on that train! Arriving at the Stampede ground, there was a queue of people waiting to get in as it still had 15 minutes or so before it opened. But listening to people talk, I could hear accents from all over, English, French, New Zealand, even some other Australians. The atmosphere ... read more

In the morning we were picked up at 6:15am. You would think that because we didn’t have to have breakfast, nothing to pack because we were only there one night and we didn’t even have to take our luggage out of the room that we would have plenty of time, but no, it was still a little early for some in our room so in the end we had to race out room to get on our bus. Fortunately we weren’t the last on the bus! Today we were the first seating for breakfast and lunch - so no scone! Again we were going through a postcard, incredible country! We went past through Kicking Horse River where we will be rafting. We saw a lot of people rafting but we weren’t sure what colour rafts our ... read more

********* HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY TRAVIS!!!!!!!!! ********** Today I wake up excited that it is the first day of the Rocky Mountaineer train ride through Canada, but I also wake up sad that today is Travis’ 18th birthday and we are so far away. I hope he knows that he will be in my thoughts (as he has been our whole trip), but being a teenage boy, he probably hasn’t given his mum a thought! I know he is surrounded by his good mates and Mum and Dad will be spending time with him. We catch a taxi to train station with the craziest driver, he nearly ran a red light - perhaps it’s still a little early for him, or it has been a long night… We check in and meet other passenger while having a ... read more
