ANNE FRANK We walk to Anne Frank’s house, it’s easy enough to spot because even though it’s not even 9am the queue to get in is already over 100 people long. Apart from the line of people, there is really nothing else to make this building any different from all those around it; it’s just an average house, in an average street opposite a canal. Fortunately I bought tickets on-line before we left Perth so we are able to bypass the line (something I definitely recommend, the only possible disadvantage is that you have to nominate a day and time), we just walk to a separate entry door; ring the bell and we’re in. The first room we go into is an empty room except for a TV on the wall. This plays a video outlining ... read more

Breakfast at the hotel is basic but perfectly fine, I’m happy because they have Rusks and Tim is happy because he can make toast, smiles all round. First up this morning we head to Madam Tussauds Wax Museum. In front of it there is a huge open square where buskers are already setting up (including the worst busker we’ve ever seen, wearing coloured tights and just standing in weird positions, maybe his morning coffee hasn’t kicked in yet…)and on the side of the square are horse and carts for hire. We see people walking around, very tired, still wearing white from the party last night. Big night for some! There is already a long queue waiting to get tickets, so glad I bought them on-line before we left home so we get to bypass the line! ... read more

This morning we are going to see where Mum lived with Aunty Rene and Oma and Opa, I’m so excited! So off we head with Carmen the Garmin leading the way. As we get close and turn off the main road, suddenly we are driving in laneways so we park in the first empty spot we see (cowards!) and walk the rest. We head to Strobloemstraat (straat means street) and hunt for Mum’s house. The street is really quaint with trees down the sides, the houses all join together and are 2-3 floors high. They all have small front gardens, most full of flowers, a little fence along the footpath. We find Mum’s house and sit out the front like paparazzi taking photo’s. It looks the same as the others but the gutters are painted where ... read more

Javier and Carmen were sneaky this morning and snuck into our area in the inner city with their cars to pick us up, sneaky, sneaky! So the plan was to get loaded up with our gear and get out really quick before the police saw them. That was the plan… Everything was all prepaid so all that was left to do was pay for one bottle of water and bolt. But then the hotel tried to charge for breakfast, got that sorted and then it was 2.25 Euros for the water so I paid that, then the printer didn’t work and he scuttles to another office for our receipt, finally he comes back and says he needs 2 more cents! Finally, 20 minutes and 2 cents later we are on our way! So we drive to ... read more

Tim is so excited today because we are catching up with Javier, his good friend and crazy Spaniard that came to work with Tim at C.A.L.M (or D.E.C as it is now called, typical Government department, change the name regularly and the public don’t know who to complain about!) for one summer back home. Javier came at 10am and we went for breaky at the same place as we had lunch yesterday coincidentally. We all had a traditional Spanish breakfast of toast with olive oil and a tomato puree on it. Wasn’t sure what to expect with olive oil instead of butter, but it was really yummy. Tim had orange juice that was fresh, fresh. Javier said that it is the only juice you get fresh in Spain because there are orange trees everywhere, even in ... read more

Breakfast at our hotel was basic but still had everything to keep us satisfied; it just didn’t have the 30 plus choices from every corner of the globe that we probably wouldn’t have eaten anyway. Went for a walk around the Cathedral opposite the hotel. Just that alone is a huge area. There were more souvenier shops than I’ve ever seen in the one area, literally every second or third shop was a souvenier shop with the highlight being all things Flamenco, I expected everything to be about the Bull Fighting. There were plenty of horse and carts on the offering for rides. They looked a whole lot healthier than their counterparts in Egypt and Jordan. We never took up the offer of a ride and so can only imagine what the price would’ve been, bit ... read more

Big day of travelling ahead of us today. Our breaky that was supposed to arrive at 6am didn’t turn up, and neither did the porters to collect our bags at 6:20am, perhaps the Kenyan guy reminisced too much last night and forgot to put the requests in… No worries, we can have breakfast at the airport and since we don’t have much luggage we usually take it ourselves anyway. Jump into a taxi to the airport, there are plenty waiting of course, it’s Dubai! The flight to London is over 7 hours but there’s plenty of movies and tv shows to keep you amused, even Tim’s works this time, usually he gets the only one on the whole plane who’s is broken! We sit next to a really nice lady from London who has been living ... read more

It’s Aquaventure water park day today! Because its attached to the hotel, lucky us get it included and it also means we don’t have to queue up behind the 100 plus teeny boppers who have obviously got no school today! The only thing we need to pay for is a locker, but with hindsight we didn’t need to get one. After putting all our stuff away in it we had a walk around and saw that most people left their gear under the pool lounges, so we trek back and leave only our good camera and my purse in there, I know, we could have just left them in our room - duh! So we claim our piece of Dubai land to call home for the day, even if it is only 2 square metres, and ... read more

We are so excited, today we are off to go and stay at the Atantis - The palm Hotel, it’s the centre piece at the top of the man-made island in the shape of a palm tree. So it is with much excitement we pile into our taxi tell him we’re going to the Atlantis and head off - in the wrong direction… I eventually manage to get a word in when the driver stops talking on his mobile long enough to hear me to ask where he is taking us. To the airport he replies! So when I convince no we REALLY DON”T want to go to the airport he finally turns around and we get going again. When we arrive, strangely he doesn’t take the 15 AED overspend off… We walk into the hotel ... read more

What’s going on back home? For some inexplicable reason, Australia actually made it onto CNN News because apparently we now have a new Prime Minister (ess), what tha!!!! Women now officially rock Australia! It’s made even more cool because I’ve spent the last 3 weeks in countries where women are lucky to be spoken to, let alone run the country! DUBAI CITY TOUR After breakfast we are picked up for our tour of Dubai. At the start it is just the 2 of us but we are told there are 6 more people to pick up. Our driver is Shoki, he is from Pakistan and has been living in Dubai since 1992, so he has seen Dubai grow a lot. He tells us that Dubai has become what it has in the last 38 years. There ... read more
