What a story
Great blog weaving local facts with the great story of Houdini. Love all those local diners across America. Everyone loves a good waterfall...and love the title. Thanks again for sharing.

Houdini
Pity you didn't have this in the name in your blog Ezra as your detail on the World's most famous escapologist was fascinating. Considering it can get so hot in Oz it would be nice to cool off in the waterfalls. Does that happen in USA?

Waterfall swims, and Houdini
Swimming in the bottom pools of waterfalls happens across the US. I've done it a number of times. The swimming spots tend to be discrete and less-known, unlike the falls in the blog. I considered putting Houdini in the title. Unfortunately, I only have pictures of the waterfalls (the museum prohibits photos) so that's what I went with. Glad you liked the writeup; I found the place fascinating.

Past travels
I'm always happen to see when someone has time to blog about a past trip. Great stuff. Some times you just have to travel no matter the recession. We've done a bit of rafting in our time so glad you got to do the Youghheny. We've never spent any time in Hartford but it sounds like a great place to explore. ..Ah yes, the stadium that almost was.

Old trips, and Hartford
Thanks for the encouragement! When I found my old notes, I realized I should turn them into blogs and share : ) I've learned to like Hartford; different enough from Boston to be "somewhere else" but still easily reachable. As for the stadium, many NFL fans (myself included) are very glad that project collapsed. I still find it hard to believe all this occurred only two years before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady arrived.

The Travel Bug???
We have heard of this bug! But we both think it is more terminal - bugs can be cured... Good for you for packing your bags!

Terminal travel bug
The travel bug is one terminal affliction I'm glad to have. Within two years it outlasted my work situation and led to the trip of a lifetime, the Rites of Passage.

New England Art Scene
A well researched and absorbing insight into the fabulous art New England has on show. Next stop white water to jangle the white matter?

Art in New England
Hartford was surprisingly fun, with many things I hadn't seen before. Thanks for the comments! For whitewater and white matter, I have an entire state of falling water and history (Pennsylvania) to pass though first. It was worth the drive!

I didn't realize that Hartford was a center for art...
when we visited there, we only went to Mark Twain's home. I liked your story about selecting the new home for the New England Patriots.

Hartford
I didn't know about Hartford and art either, until I bought a book on US art museums and both were in it. Very glad I included them on this trip. As for the Patriots, I witnessed the whole thing. It was unbelievable, tragic, and sort-of hilarious. One Boston sports columnist published a list of other significant events Hartford could go after once the stadium was finished: relocate the New York Marathon, move the Sundance film festival to the East Hartford Showcase Cinema (an ugly concrete now-closed multiplex), and so forth.

Lovely lake
Your hiking tour of Lake "Winnie" was delightful to read. Having visited the area several times, I enjoyed reading about it from a different point of view.

Thanks for the comments!
Glad you liked the blog. The guidebook where I found the trail called it the best in the area during October, and the description was accurate.

Love your impressions of the festival
We've been to the one in Reno. Such an impressive sight. We rode in a balloon when we were living in Richmond, Virginia. The flight took us over all the fall foliage. It was lovely.

Wow! What a compendium...
a must read for anyone who wants to visit the US. Thanks for your effort.

What a great summary!
We've been to Wall Drug so it was great to see your photo. Thanks for these great memories.

“party like no tomorrow”
Nice to see an old rocker getting into trance...enlightening! Some names there could qualify for Song of the Week...the Week of "S" which kicks off this Friday evening...look forward to seeing you there.

Nice, but noticed some mistakes.
I found this while looking for other things about my home town of Pendleton, OR. I noticed some mistakes you might like to know about (or ignore as you wish). The first is that, in spite of spending my childhood playing in the Blue Mountains, I have never heard of "Blue Pass" There is a "Deadman Pass' in the area you describe, which is in the Blue Mountains. Perhaps you are referring to that. Also, your statement that "not much grows out here" could not be further from the truth in spite of appearances. The area is one of the most productive farming areas in the country. Within just a few miles of Pendleton, Wheat; barley; alfalfa and grass hay; peas; strawberries; blackberries; grapes/wineries; apples; pears; peaches; Lavender; asparagus; potatoes and many other agricultural products are produced, processed; packaged and shipped nationally and internationally. Not no mention, timber and ranching of cattle, sheep and pigs are also big in this area. The other mistake I will mention is the name of the town where the nuclear facility is. The name is Richland, not Richmond. Best Wishes.

Thanks for the corrections
Thanks for the comments; I strive for accurate blogs. I had to stick to I-84 for schedule reasons, so only saw what was near the highway. I corrected the entry accordingly.

Thus far, the weather has always prevented me from visiting Chaco Canyon...
glad to see if finally improved for you. Maybe someday I'll make it. I attended a lecture by an anthropologist who was an expert on the subject of the Chaco Canyon culture. She said that they laid out the kivas in the pattern of the Plieades constellation, and that many of the tribes in the Southwest also laid out their teepees in the same pattern. Did you hear anything like this when you visited Chaco?

Chaco canyon alignments
Thanks for the comments! For the weather, I got lucky schedule wise. I planned to see many things in the general area, so I could wait for the weather to clear enough for Chaco. It finally happened on the third to last possible day to visit. For the pueblo layouts, the museum and rangers talked more about the cardinal directions and the position of the sun on important days. The stairways of the Great Kivas are aligned almost perfectly north south, for example.
