The last month of my trip … I took a 2am bus from Cuenca to Guayaquil (Ecuador most populated city) to catch my 10 am flight to Baltra, Galapagos. When we got to the island, we had to pay a 100$ entrance fee. I thought everyone knew that but apparently not. An American women (how am I not surprised) with her 2 sons said: ‘’You guys are trying to rip us off! We are not paying that!’’ She was asking everybody around here if they knew it and they all said she but she continued her scene. After I passed the customs, I took a first bus, then a ferry and then another bus to Puerto Ayora, where I was going to stay for the next month. This is called South American style: Why build a ... read more

After leaving Huancayo, it was the beginning of my true experience of backpacking alone in South America. I had 5 weeks to do so before heading to the Galapagos Islands for the last month of my trip. Marcahuasi Hike (May 23 & 24) Leaving Huancayo, my first stop was Marcahuasi. To get there, we neede first to hire a private drive to Chosica (6 hours), then wait 4 hours in Chosica (not a problem as I had my first proper salad for months) and finally take a local bus to San Pedro de Costa. The ride from Huancayo to Chosica was crazy, as we had a typical Peruvian driver who was driving fast and dangerously. I did this trip with three American friends from Huancayo (Mary, Jen and Carmen) and we were also meeting my friend ... read more

Overview – Volunteering Experience (2nd Month) Since the three guys have left the place, it has been quite in the house. I moved up to sleep on the second floor because the nights were getting colder and it was warmer in the room upstairs. NOTE: I watched many of the NHL playoff games as I missed hockey. Initially, I was watching the games on my phone. However, after a while, I couldn´t stream the games on my phone so I was going to an Internet place that was close to my house. It was so funny seeing the kids staring at me watching hockey as they probably never seen that in the life. Huari (May 2) On Sunday, I went with the girls (Stefany and Gwen) to a little village near Huancayo called Huari. If I ... read more

Overview – Volunteering Experience So far, my volunteering experience is going pretty well. Initially, I was supposed to be on different projects, such as Microfinance and others. Due to circumstances, I ended up teaching English in an Elementary school for about 5 hours a day (2nd and 4th grades). With time, I got used to it and I like working with kids. However, I also realized that I am not very patient with them. As the kids didn’t really have any exposure to English language, I am pretty much teaching the same thing to both grades, and those things are very basic such as colors, greetings, etc. I have classes every day from 1pm to 6pm. My mornings are always the same: 1) Waking up at 7:30am (or earlier if one of the brothers put some ... read more

*** NOTE: Sorry for the pictures, but I put only those that I already uploaded on facebook. I gave the USB key I had (with all my photos) to Zeljka (that got bak to Canada) before uploading my blog. Lake Titicaca (March 8) From La Paz, we took a local bus to Copacabana, which is the main Bolivian city on the Lake Titicaca. We had to take a ferry to cross a lake at one point. Actually, we were on a boat and our bus (and all our stuff) was on a separate ferryboat. The trip was really nice. At times, I felt like I was in Croatia. We spent one night in Copacabana (with a beautiful sunset) before taking a boat to the Isla del Sol. It is to be noted that Copacabana is a ... read more

J-22 February 16 2015 (Holiday – Feriado) After a weekend in Oruro, I got to Sucre at 7am. First thing I did (even before saying Hi! to my family) is to take a shower as I didn’t have one since Thursday. My family thought I would go to bed after (because they thought I was tired) but no! I actually went to the market with one of the cousins of the family. In the afternoon, I worked on my blog … To get home from the Internet Café, I had to run (very fast) as kids were throwing water balloons and it was so cold outside!!! At night, I was chilling with my family and doing my homework. FUN STORY: My family (and the other two American women that study in the same school as me) ... read more

J-8: February 2, 2015 For my second week of classes, I got a new teacher. I went from Jorge ´´Grande´´ to Jorge ´´Pequeno´´, or Jorgetito. Two new students started this week: two 70+ years old Americans. They are nice, but ask some weird questions to the locals. For example, during lunch time (as they are eating in with ´´my family´´), they asked my host brothers: Why is your country so poor? Is this president also corrupted like the others? Etc. The rest of the day I didn´t do much. I studied at La Recoleta with the beautiful view of the city. At night, we went to eat with friends in the ´´Mercado Central´´. This time, I tried Tojori (a drink made of corn which has an interesting taste), banuelos (something similar to donuts) and a cheese ... read more

My first blog post will be more like a diary because I will be living in Sucre for 4 weeks and live like a local. This also means that I won’t have 1000 of pictures as my goal is to not look like a tourist (which is hard). After those 4 weeks, when I will be travelling around Bolivia and Peru, I will write blog posts about places I visit (not on a daily basis) and I will have much more pictures … J-1: January 26, 2015 At 11 am, I got to Sucre from Santa Cruz where my host family was waiting for me at the airport with my name written in big letters on a piece of paper (you know, a touristic thing that we see in movies). It was a short 35 minutes ... read more
