I woke very early around 0530 and got up to enjoy the spectacular view of Annapurna II from the decking of our guesthouse. The evenings and early mornings are cold now so long trousers and fleece top are necesary. We took a walk up to the Gompa at the very top of Upper Pisang after breakfast. I stuck my head inside but it was rather dark despite a few candles burning. There seemed to be a lump under a red blanket so we didn't want to disturb a monks sleep and made a quick exit after making a small donation. We hit the trail at 9am and the familiar pattern soon emerged with Darren striding ahead, me behind and Hari bringing up the rear with the packs. There are very few trekkers on the trail at ... read more

We have arrived in Upper Pisang after a superb trek today through some marvellous scenery. The walk was a lot easier than either of us expected, we managed to get away at 8am sharp and arrived Pisang around 2.30 with the usual lengthy 90 minute lunch stop. More and more snow capped peaks are revealing themselves now and on arrival in Pisang Annapurna II dominates the skyline. 100m above Pisang is Upper Pisang across the river and up a steep staircase up the hillside. We are now at 3300m, nearly 11,000ft and that extra 100m really hurt. It was worth the effort however as much more of Annapurna II is revealed up here. Even with the wispy afternoon clouds which form around the peaks it looks quite spectacular, a huge wall of ice rising up above ... read more

I slept well last night despite the 0330 wake up call from the Gompa (Buddhist temple) on the hill where the monks carried out a ceremony in the middle of the night involving a tanoy musical broadcast of the Buddhist anthem followed by a horn blowing performance. Bewfore setting off this morning we visited the Gompa where maybe a dozen monks were inside spinning prayer wheels and studying. We also saw the memorial to the British trekker who died in the 1995 landslide at Bagarchap which killed 11 villagers and 9 trekkers. Today we passed through connifer woodland and reached the largest town since Besisahar, Chame after a 530m climb. Overlooking Chame is Annapurna II which looked splendid approaching the town. Late afternoon has brought the usual cloud cover but we should wake up to a ... read more

Let me tell you a little bit about Hari. Hari is 48 years old, father of 4 and has worked as a porter in the Himalayas all his life. He has recently developed his English and wants to become a guide. On this particular jaunt, Haris is acting as porter-guide carrying my 60L pack and offering insight where possible into local culture. Up until today Hari has been doing his thing, leading us both in the right direction, moving himself and my pack (and his own daypack) steadily onward and upwards in outstanding heat and without it seems even breaking into a sweat. Hari is eager to please and always ready to share a smile and a joke. Tonight we arrived in Bagarchap, a small village right on the doorstep of some of the bigges mountains ... read more

Today, whilst a shorter hike than yesterday was actually quite difficult. Very undulating and again very hot on the trail. We left Bahundanda just before 8am and descended steeply, weeving our way past rice and millet terraces. We stopped at Ghermu Phant for a drink and then crossed the river again to Syange via footbridge number 5. The trail then takes a steep slope up valley. We passed numerous packs of mules coming in the opposite direction and saw one poorly looking animal with an open wound where his pack had been tied perhaps a little too tightly. Before arriving in Jagat for lunch Hari had us rockclimbing a fairly steep and rocky shortcut which he claims saved us 40 minutes. Haris is 48 but he flew up that wall of rock not only with my ... read more

We were both asleep by 2200 last night as we were completely exhausted after the long trip from Kathmandu. After breakfast this morning we hit the road at 0725. Turning left out of the guesthouse we immediately descended a rocky path to the riverbed which offered great views across the valley basking in the early morning sunlight. Not a cloud in the sky. So, within 5 minutes of departure I'm already thinking this is absolutely amazing. Then, Hari's mobile rings, ' Hello?' Er what just happened to my remote Himalayan experience? 'I'm in the mountains!' Unbelievable! The mobile was soon put away and we followed the river which soon twisted to the left. Daz was in front and shouted back, 'Rich, I think you're gonna like this'. After turning the corner we could see snow capped ... read more

The transit bus left Kathmandu dead on 7am. Don't be fooled by the 'tourist' bus title, this wasn't a VIP bus with leather seats and onboard chef. Once the young lady in front had reclined her seat cosily into my groin there wasn't a lot of room for maneouvre. No AC either. Never mind, once we had eaked our way out of Kathmandu traffic and into the surrounding hillside the views were very enjoyable. We followed a winding road hugging the banks of the River Trisuli all the way to Dumre. We arrived in Dumre at 1145 and walked into a right old row. After getting off the bus we were rushed onto a mini bus (by a somewhat beligerant young man) bound for Besisahar. I asked Mr beligerant how much the fare was. '650 NR ... read more

The Maoists called off their blockade of Kathmandu one day prior to our arrival which we were both jolly pleased about. I flew direct with Thai but poor Darren had to endure a connection in Hong Kong plus a touchdown in Dhaka, Bangladesh meaning a late arrival into Kathmandu on Sunday night. I arrived at lunchtime and as I was pretty much expecting it was sensory overload as soon as I left the airport. I was met by the Kathmandu Peace Guest House 'rep' and transfered to our luxury $18 a night accomodation in a rusty old minibus which took 4 attempts to start and stalled 3 times enroute. It was a long transfer as traffic was hideous plus of course napping cows in the middle of the road always delay things a tad. The guest ... read more

Well hello everybody this is Bangkok. It's now 0349 on Sat 07th May and we have had an interesting time here in BKK already. Between 0100-0500 it is only 10 baht an hour in this internet cafe beneath our hotel at Rambutri village, I think darrens backpacker economic philosophy is starting to rub off on me. Today we had a bit of a lie in despite an eraly night last night. We have really not had any early nights since I arrived in Thailand 10 days ago and I think last night things caught up with us both and we were asleep shortly after 10 I think. After breakfast at Lamplu house which is Darrens favourite breakfast establishment it was time to find a replacemnet for my Gulf Of Thailand damaged Canon IXUS. Well that took ... read more

Great day today in sunny Koh Samui. We did the touristy thing and joined a daytrip to Ang Thong National Park which is a group of beautiful islands about an hour and a half off the west coast. It has been a glorious day and very very hot. The islands are famous for inspiring 'The Beach' and it's easy to see why. Shortly after boarding the boat Darren bumped into an old buddy Chris who used to work with him at Amex Sydney, small world it seems. We visited Mae Koh island first which had and amazing lagoon and a viewpoint which was a bit dissapointing actually seeing as their were 3 million tourists trying to make their way up a thin rocky path. Second stop after lunch on the boat was Wua Talap Island which ... read more
