The downward trend is very much over. Today is the greatest climb of the circuit, nearly 1700m. Christina, Jamie & Kim lefy for Pokhara this morning so our group is gradually reducing in size. Yet another wet and overcast day unfortunately. Darren befriended a dog in Tatopani which insisted on following us this morning. It seemed keen on coming to Ghorepani with us so Darren accosted a local returning to Tatopani who agreed to carry 'Rupee' back into town. Today was another long and tough daybut on arrival in Ghorepani we treated ourselves to Yak cheese & crackers accompanied with hot chocolate and rum, a surprisingly good combination. The dining room heater was fired up with plenty of dry wood so by the time Dal Baht arrived we were well on the road to recovery. Arriving ... read more

Today was a long trek, a fraction under 15 miles and a huge descent of 1400m. It was an early start from Kalopani at around 7am. I managed to locate the girls guesthouse last night (they were the only trekkers in the whole village bar one American guy) so the four of us walked together today. Whilst it started brightly the weather again deteriorated and it was overcast most of the afternoon. Hari found us a plum tree for some extra sustinence and by the time we arrived in Kalopani at around 5 ish we had been on the road nearly 10 hours and were quite ready to experience the hot springs of Tatopani. A couple of San Miguels in the hot bath was a welcome end to the day. Tatopani lies at 1190m, we have ... read more

After a few apple ciders last night and a mustang coffee (loadsa whiskey and a dash of coffee!), I wasn't too lively this morning. Some of our group are moving on to Kalopani or Tatopani today and others are taking a rest day in Marpha. Due to a dusty road being constructed between Jomsom and Ghasa the route from here can be a little unpleasant due to passing jeeps, dust and high winds. Darren wants a rest day and will take a jeep with Jamie, Kim, Marcus and Christine tommorow to Tatopani. Having succesfully negotiated Thorong La I am reluctant to use and transportation around the circuit so will go with Hari to Kalopani 19km today and then Tatopani tommorowand meet darren there. A couple of the girls, Jane and Min are doing the same but ... read more

We departed the Shangri La in tour group style fitted out with our new white scarfs. Classy. Off we marched for Jomsom where we planned to stop for lunch, get some cash and grab a shave. Another gorgeous sunny day in the Himalayas, bright blue skies overhead. We walked through a valley which seemed as though it should be a riverbed but apparently it remains dry throughout the year. Light aircraft started whizzing overhead as we approached Jomsom. Jomsom has daily scheduled flights to Pokhara (wind conditions permitting). On arrival we broke away from the group and spotted a German bakery and coffee shop. We poped in and found 4 of the group from the Chris Bonnington anniversary expedition we had met in Manang last week. Suberb, Chris was with them this time! What a nice ... read more

After a mega sleep and a hearty breakfast we took a gentle stroll up to the temple at Muktinath. Muktinath is a sacred town fo both hindu's and Buddhistsand both share the temple grounds with the Hindu temple alongside the buddhist Gompa's. Hari washed his face from all 108 cows head which spout water. Hari say's this promotes health and long life. We also went inside the Buddhist Gompa where a natural gas flam glows from the earth. Shortly after 12 we started the short and very downhill trek to Kagbeni. After yesterday's 1600m descent the thighs are hurting and this is another 1000m drop. After negotiating another 'Hari shortcut' which left me caked in mud we stopped at the Romeo & Juliet Lodge in Khingar for a swift noodle soup. The trek today wa hugely ... read more

The big day is here. I slept fairly well and woke up feeling pretty good. I will ascend to High Camp and make a decision from there. Darren, myself and Peter had breakfast at 0430, porridge and tea for me, 2 boiled eggs for Dazza. The weather is great, clear blue skies and no wind. We began to ascend at 0515 just after first light up the steep scree slope. All the other trekkers went flying off whilst I pigeon stepped my way up the mountain with trusty Hari right behind mewilling me upwards. It took me 90 minutes to reach high camp, slow but more importantly I wasn't completely wasted and would be able to push on for the pass without the assistance of a horse. After a lemon tea at high camp we left ... read more

I had a much better nights sleep and my heartrate is a lot more comfortable now. Hari wanted to give me a little 'test' before we set off for Thorong Phedi which is the final frontier before the pass. We climbed up probably 100m above Yak Kharka on a very steep trail. I went very slowly and was able to reach a decent height without any serious discomfort. Thorong Phedi is around a 450m climb and I was sure I could do that, the question was what sort of condition I would arrive in ready for the pass the next morning. We set off with our trekking buddy Peter who had arrived last night from a tough excursion to Tilichio Lake. I inched my way up the slope at the end of the yak grazing area ... read more

I had a shocking nights sleep due to some pretty regular and uncomfortable palpitations. I think maybe I got 2-3 hours sleep only. I'm not sure if it's being caused by a weeks heavy exertion or the altitude and resulting lack of oxygen - probably a combination of the two. Either way it's not good news as I'm breathless and slightly feint after simply climbing a flight of stairs. We are still 1500m below Thorong La, how the heck am I going to get up and over the pass? If things don't improve I will need to make alternative arrangements however inconvenient that is. If you get into trouble at 5400m (nearly 18000ft) and need medical attention it isn't going to arrive in a hurry. We sat down today and made some provisional plans which would ... read more

Darren woke up this morning full of cold and generally feeling pretty rotten. After breakfast he perked up a little and we decided to move onwards even if only to the next village of Gunsangat 3900m. We made Gunsang fairly comfortably although I am now moving very slowly indeed. Moving at any speed is leaving me gasping for breath which is a tad worrying seeing as we are still 1500m below Thorong La Pass. we took a long break at Gunsang, enjoying the views from the Marsyangdi Hotel across to the Annapurna massif. The sun was still shining although the clouds around the peaks were beginning to darken. By the time we reached Yak Kharka the wind was up and the sky completely overcast and within 30 minutes of arrival snow was steadily falling. We arrived ... read more

Today wasn't a rest day at all. When climbing to high altitude the popular mantra is 'climb high, sleep low'. So, the concept today was a short daytripto a higher altitude, say 3-500m and then return to Manang for the night. Darren had a heavy cold this morning so skipped the morning excursion to Gangapurna Lake. Gangapurna soars over Manang along with it's glacial lake. I climbed the steep trail around 300m along with Peter and Jane (who we met yesterday)and got some great views across to Manang and the peaks of Pisang and to the north Thorong La where we will be heading soon. It was hard but manageable, we returned to Manang for some lunch. Over lunch a rather rowdy crowd came in and introduced themselves. They were a very friendly group of Brits ... read more
