I was in Port Arthur a few months after this
http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/april/28/newsid_4297000/4297487.stm
There was a small memorial there and some flowers. I wonder if it is still there.
And a strange but true story. At Port Arthur there is an outdoor restaurant so we all had lunch there. The salad was made from leaves picked from the garden out back and had worm on them! I think 2 people's salad's had worms!
Suffice to say we left sarcastic comments in the restaurant guestbook as in
Very Fresh Salad!!!!!! Enjoyed the worms
and many more.
Can't remember of course what we wrote after all these years
Happy Birthday Mate Looks like your doing well and have gone quite a long way. Just a quick comment to say have a good birthday and we will make sure we raise a glass to ya back home (probably not but you get the gist)
Glad you are enjoying it so far, keep reading heading across russia next although god knows how il keep it updated.
the costs for the trains are... L"viv - Kiev approx 10 euros (although we went 2nd class, 1st class is recommended unless you are a very good sleeper ) - 10 hour train... Kiev - Moscow approx 40 euros each (1st class) - 12hr train and Moscow St petersburg is about 51 euros each - 8hr train
Train costs Just out of curiosity Pete, how much are the trains between L'viv-Kiev, Kiev-Moscow and Moscow-St Petersburg?
Thoroughly enjoying the read by the way! Good luck!
Excellent post Pete, a most entertaining read, i particularly like the half hourly updates through the night. Have fun in Krakow, its heaving with bars restaurants and clubs in and around the market square (Rynek Glowny)
The blog is a bit backwards? anyway....
Sorry about Mitch, man this changes everything doesn't it?
In the guidebook for western europe, it will tell you about train passes (http://www.seat61.com/Europe.htm) and bus/coach passes (ilke this http://www.eurolines-pass.com/index.php?id=113) and (http://www.busabout.com/)
Mitch.... R.I.P xxx Pete.... thought you would at least make it over to Eastern Europe before Mitch decided to give up the ghost.... never mind... What an adventure you've got before you now. I said to Nancy... had you of been in Spain you could have bought yourself a donkey from the Donkey Sancturary... that would have been a sight... seeing 3 young English People trekking around the globe on donkeys...
Hope you're enjoying the cuisine....
Fran
