Days 39 - 41. There wasn't really too much to do in Shanghai. Our hostel is from the same branch as the one in Beijing so it's been good to relax there for a few days. My camera broke so i had to buy a new one for 100quid (more than 3 days budget!!!) so i've been laying low for a bit. On the first day here we were all starving so went to try and find a Mcdonalds (eating real Chinese is great for dinner but breakfast and lunch is a bit too much). We turned right from our hostel and walked for about 45minutes and found nothing. Later that day i'd go for a walk and go left - and find a Mcdonald's and KFC just 200 yards down the road. Our morning walk was during rush hour and the noise, smog and traffic was unbelievable. Shanghai is not a place to be walking around if you have a hangover. The sheer volume of bikes is quite a sight, but i haven't been able to get a decent picture yet.
One morning the smog was really thick, you couldn't see the huge buildings that were in front of
you. In a way though, it's better than Beijing as people let you go about your business and don't try and force things on you. You can happily browse a market (by market, i mean just a blanket on the floor by a main road with a few bits of crap on it) without being bothered. That night we ate out and people would be staring through the window at us whilst we ate. I think it's because we have funny eyes compared to them.
Today (Saturday 11th October) we leave for Guangzhou on another overnight train. I'll be celebrating my birthday there so if anyone is in the area feel free to drop by!!

Looks like your doing well and have gone quite a long way. Just a quick comment to say have a good birthday and we will make sure we raise a glass to ya back home (probably not but you get the gist)
