Well it’s Mobile Explorer’s first trip abroad and it started okay - well okay ish as Mike was driving and he nearly killed us twice and I had lots of adrenalin going through my veins when passing large lorries - how the hell am I going to cope being driven on the wrong side of the road with Mike driving on the wrong side of the van - oh no will I make it a alive!!! So we get to the P&O ferry at Hull and although I have been reading up about you are not allowed to take any dairy, meat and vegetables if I am honest I had packed them this morning and then thought better of it as I am sure Holland, or as it is now called, the Netherlands has supermarkets! Well it is a lovely day out there today and we have decided to go to Bamburgh first in the Motorhome. Mike drove and we had a stroll along the beach and had as everyone does a nice cup of tea or coffee if you are Mike. We found that you could stay with a Motorhome or Campervan in the car park overnight for £12 overlooking the magnificent castle. This is not bad if you can get in at the Lobster Pot for an evening meal - so I have noted this down in my book as this could be a little gem overlooking the castle and seeing the sun rise or sun set, not sure which one would look best! Off we then pop to Alnwick and I decide in my wisdom not to park ... read more

We decided to take the motorhome out for a few days to check everything was working okay before we ventured overseas to meet up with over 40 Carthago motorhome owners in Denmark. So yesterday we arrive at a nice quiet site called River Breamish which is near Alnwick. Well when I asked where the site was Mike insisted it was in Beamish and we could visit the Beamish museum, so as you can tell mine and Mike’s sense of direction leave much to be desired. Up relatively early as we have had a few really early mornings recently with me doing a 2am - 6am shift at Samaritans and then some late night zoom calls on strategy and then to cap it all an early start at Garth Prison (as a Samaritans and not an in-mate ... read more

So decided not to get up early as if honest already been to the Acropolis but not inside the Temple of Zeus so going there instead. We have checked in for our flights as we now have a stop over in Frankfurt as our original flight has been cancelled. The hotel has kindly let us stay in our room until 3pm when the taxi picks us up which is great news. I can now have a shower before we start our travels as our flight is 18.30 and we do not get into Manchester until 22.55 with a 2 hour stopover in Frankfurt. I thought I would put a photo of the welcome party for the German dignitaries yesterday - I wonder what will happen today! So we get to the Temple of Zeus and the ... read more

So we wer up early this morning and decided to go to the funicular to see if it is running as it is a Bank Holiday Monday just like at home. Anyway, thank goodness it was working so we decided not to get a return ticket but a single and we would walk down. It is the first ever funicular that I have been on that was carved through rock so there is absolutely nothing to see apart from a tunnel. However, when you get out and you see the views from the top of Lycabettus Hill they are truly amazing and take your breath away how big and sprawling Athens is. There is a chapel at the top and I went into the Chapel of Saint George of Lycabettus which was founded in 1834 - ... read more

So the day started out with Eric, Sue, Mike and myself going to find a little place for breakfast - then we realised it was Sunday and not only that but a Bank Holiday weekend so after a little stroll realised not a lot would be open so we made our way back to the hotel for breakkie. As the breakkie was not included we made sure we had enough to keep us going for a while. We left Sue and Eric as they were catching a taxi to the airport and I really wanted to be on the front row for the changing of the guard outside Athens parliament. I was not disappointed as it was a spectacle- very unlike our changing of the guards but totally traditional. I must say their walk is unbelievable, ... read more

We arrived in Santorini and it was as beautiful as it is in the photos with the blue domes and the white buildings. We found an amazing spot to have lunch, and of course a drink, which seemed to hang off the cliff front - probably why the bill was quite large for what we had but hey ho we are on holiday. Not much else to tell you about apart from it is a stunning island. The next day we sailed to Monemvasta which we have been to once before and it is a walk to get to the walled city which does not allow cars. Once again what a pretty place, not as touristy as Santorini but beautiful - again we had a spot of lunch on a balcony overlooking the sea. You would ... read more

So after a day and a half at sea we are now in civilisation as the Captain said to me on the bridge (hey, look I know the lingo). We arrive in Rhodes at the tourist jetty and it is the old part of Rhodes which I remember is beautiful. We decide that we would leave the ship - it did not take that long for us to decide that and walk into the old town. Once in town we see shops, yes shops with nice things in not like in Egypt - hang on here Paula I am saying to myself you did not go into any shops in Egypt, so I am being a tad naughty there. I have been looking for a nice white handbag for my holidays and if you know me ... read more

Our adventures carry on in Egypt. Well after arriving yesterday at Port Said and having to give all our passports over even if we were not getting off the ship and then being allowed to get them back - this Egyptian passport fiasco is getting a bit annoying. Anyway this morning we decide that we are going to have a stroll around Port Said. What can I say about Port Said. Well the streets are really disgusting with glass, rubble and just general rubbish so not a good start there to be honest. We walk around a corner and there is a church and if there is a church there is Eric wanting to go inside. Now normally that would not be a problem in most countries but we are in Egypt. We should have known ... read more

So today we are going through the Suez Canal which is one of my bucket list items WHY I have no idea but it is. I could have got up really early like other passengers did to see us enter the canal but to be honest did not quite make this so got up at a normal hour and saw we were already going through it. Well the Suez Canal is what I can describe as okay but not something I would rave about apart from the engineering of it - I cannot imagine how this could happen and how it was engineered. And time would tell that I had missed almost nothing by not getting up at the crack of dawn but I now know it was a spectacular sunrise so maybe I am wrong ... read more
