Well night one completed sleeping in a typical Japanese house called a Ryokan. We had to be back and the lights off before curfew which was 10.30pm last night. So before finding somewhere to eat we had a walk around, Nara it is such a lovely place, it was well worth staying than just visiting for the day which most people tell you to do. We were back in plenty of time for the curfew which was good as at one stage we got a little lost as there are so many little side streets you keep thinking did I go down this one or not. Anyway as getting into bed Mike noticed the pillows were full of rice and were hard - so he was not the happiest bunny in the world, sleeping on the ... read more

Well got the train to Nara with no hitches at all we must be getting good at this and we even got off at the right stop. We thought Kyoto had a lot of history and also very typical Japanese but hey ho, it has nothing on Nara. Mind you we arrived at Nara train station and looked at the map and spoke to the lady in the tourist information centre and she said it is a 15 minute walk to where we are staying. We arrived in the hotest time of the day and guess what Mike wants to walk - WHAT I exclaim, are you sure - it is hot out there i.e. 90 degrees - yes he exclaims I want to feel like a real back packer. Well that came to haunt him ... read more

Well out for a meal and a drink. How hilarious we were arguing all the way and then found a market stall that cooked gyoza for us as we ordered so fab and so fresh unbelievable. Then we found another place walking over cockroaches this reminded me of Nepal but not quite as Nepal where I was staying was infested with them in my bedroom. Anyway met 2 couples at a bar and what fun they were but unfortunately got back to our hotel and realised I had left my glasses behind. Without my reading glasses I am lost as cannot read a thing. Anyway my hero on steroids (if you do not know what I am talking about here see the anti-histamine blog) went racing from the hotel and went back to the bar. Now ... read more

Well up and adam this morning and off to the temple Tenryu-Ji in Arashiyama it is one of the world heritage sights. We started off by getting the metro and then a tram. We went into the first temple which was called the "Temple of the Holy Dragon". Once inside it was beautiful, the roof was painted in a blue dragon and wherever you were in the temple the dragon's eyes were on you. Anyway we sat down and then a monk came out and started to give a lecture to everyone in Japanese - it must have been good as he had the crowd a few times in laughter - shame we could not understand a word he said - we need to brush up on this Japanese language. After escaping the temple without the ... read more

Well woke up to a scream from Mike from the bathroom - only to find him shouting I have taken my steriod tablet that I should only take for a major asthma attack, instead of my anit-histamine that I need to take. I was expecting the incredible hulk to come out of the bathroom - but hey ho no Mike emerged as normal. Anyway this started a hunt in Kyoto city centre for a chemist to find some anti-histamine tablets. We went to first chemist trying to explain what we wanted by sneezing, rubbing our eyes and saying fever - to which we were surrounded by Japanese looking quizically at us - saying fever, fever. I thought at one stage we were going to be quarantined, ha ha. We made a hasty escape with a few ... read more

Forgot to show you Mike carrying his rucksack in Tokyo waiting for the Bullet train (does'nt he look a natural). Well nearly day one in Kyoto finished. Parts of Kyoto are what you expect Japan to be like. We have seen a number of Geisha girls. It seems really weird when they are walking down the street next to western clothed Japanese girls. We found the Ponto-cho avenue which is one of the oldest tradiitonal avenues in Kyoto. To be honest we fell upon it by accident. We decided that we would get something to eat here as it was so quaint and some of the cafes/resturants overlooked the river. Anyway after much deliberation we could not find a cafe/restuarant overlooking the river so we chose the other side of the road. It is unlike Tokyo ... read more

I forgot to mention - when standing in the queue for the Tuna auction the people in front said "so you were here for our last earthquake" - so I was right Mr Fairbairn, it was an earthquake and for once I was not exaggerating (which I must admit is a first). Anyway downloaded another picture from the auction for you as it is an amazing sight and we have also been told that they are moving the fish market in the very near future and when they move it they will no longer let the public in. We have now arrived in Kyoto by the bullet train which is an amazing journey, Richard Branson take a leaf out of the Japanese train system. Mind you since being in Kyoto it has not stopped raining - ... read more

Hi everyone - well you know I said we had to get up early to get to the Tuna auction - well spoke to the concierge in the hotel last night to find out what time the first metro started and they said we needed to leave real early - guess what time we had to leave? I bet not one of you guessed this 3.20am, yes I did say am!! Anyway we needed to get a taxi as the metro does not start until 5am - Anyone who knows Japan knows that getting a taxi is like daylight robbery. Mind you saying daylight robbery in the middle of the night seems stupid but hey take my word it is day light robbery. One point for all you readers out there (that is if there is ... read more

Last night we went to find somewhere to eat that was not to expensive but authentic. We fell upon this little cafe that was full of Japanese and had to choose what to have from a menu that you could not decipher - but gordon bennett it was fantastic - still don't know what we ate. Anyway this jet lag thing came in handy today as we needed to get up early to get to the fish market. In the Discover Japan Lonely Planet guide it said you needed to be there by 9am to see the stalls, however, the fish market opened at 5am. Well we got to the market at 6.30 that meant leaving the hotel shortly before 6am (told you jet lag came in handy). Anyway the book does not tell you about ... read more

Well talk about jet lag we kept on waking up and then finally woke up at 11.44am. Still in work mode we jumped out of bed and rushed out the door to catch the bus into Shinjuku metro station. When we got there we suddenly remembered we are not a timetable anymore ha ha. Anyway first stop was to the Imperial Palace where the emperor and imperial family live. Anyway as anyone knows trying to read Japanese is extremely hard (and that is being nice) so we asked at a travel agency and they did not even know what we were talking about, even when I showed the lady in Japanese where we wanted to go. So true brits we eventually found it (just like the true brit Sherlock Holmes). Attached a photo for you to ... read more
