Was Mike naked or not? Well arrive back in in Tokyo and just get settled into the hotel and first thing get the blog off and catch up on what you have all been doing on facebook. Facebook is a little bit of home for me finding out what you are all doing. Anyway a good friend (Amanda) sent me a message through facebook to facetime her. So quick like a shot I try using my MacAir and cannot seem to connect. So try via my phone and hey presto there is Amanda talking to me from Starbucks at the Fort in Manchester - isn’t technology brill. So we are catching up on what is going on from both Amanda’s perspective and mine and Mike decides to wave at Amanda. Now picture the scene I am ... read more

I suppose you have all been wondering - where is Mike and Paula’s blog! Well I can tell you the hotel that I suggested said it had wifi but when you tried to connect you just could not do so. Not only that we had to get a taxi to it - the hotel Mike suggested was across the road from the train station and probably had wifi! Does not stop there as we try booking in at the hotel reception and they have no booking for us - they can find a room but it was a smoking room and not a Japanese Room that we booked - Decided that keeping head down at this stage was a really good thing as anyone who has seen steam coming from Mike’s ears knows this was a ... read more

I am in trouble again - I keep on losing my umbrella which acts as a sun barrier - sorry to mention it but it is cracking the flags here and has been since we arrived in Japan. Anyway, this time I left it on a bench - but true to form when we got back it is there ready and waiting for me to pick it up again. England we could take a leaf out of the Japanese way of life. Everyone is polite, cannot do enough for you and appears to be totally honest. Well I think Mr F is getting into the spirit of being retired - yesterday we were walking along and he stopped suddenly - whats wrong I say "in a loud voice he says where's my hat, and again anxiously ... read more

Asia » Japan » Okayama » Okayama July 16th 2012

Well after catching a train from Kagoshima to Okayama we are now in our hotel room just unloading the rucksacks off our backs. It was funny but at Hiroshima station four westerners joined our train and too be honest I thought "we're the only westerners on this train" - sounds like "I'm the only gay in the village", ha ha. Cannot add any photos as the wifi in our hotel in Okayama is really bad - sorry. When arranging our trains for Takayama and then onto Tokyo the queue ended up being out of the building as the poor man behind the counter was getting flustered with our request. I did say to him once he had completed the bookings "you speak very good English - to which he beamed and said do I" ah bless. ... read more

Well up early and off on another train journey - glad we got the Japan Rail passes as we have really used them. Anyone going to Japan you must purchase these outside of Japan and I can honestly say it will save you an absolute fortune (this is my advice for today! see also getting wise whilst in Japan). I had decided that we were going to experience an onsen and also a natural sand bath. Well after and 1 1/2 hour train journey and then transfer by bus for another 10 minutes we arrive at Ibusuki Sunamushi Onsen. Mike is really apprehensive by now and is thinking what the hell has she roped me in for this time. Up the escalator we go and join the queue. The lady then takes our money and gives ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kagoshima » Sakurajima July 14th 2012

Well started the day off well got up and got the bus (yes, Mike does travel on a bus - only when PJ makes him though, ha ha) and then the ferry over to Sakurajima. Mike did a risk assessment prior to us going as he worked out that the volcano had erupted 4 times a day this year and today it would not erupt. Sometimes good having an actuary in your company as they can work out the odds - just thought should I take him to the horse racing, might win a million!!!!! We took a foot spa which is from the volcanic water - it is supposed to be medicinal, does that mean it cures everything - course it does I am in Japan and in the land of plenty - with so ... read more

Last meal with our adopted friends was brilliant we had oysters, squid and pork and chicken tempura washed down with a couple of beers (yes, only a couple). Anyway whilst eating our meal we were watching TV and noticed that they were showing landslides in Japan. We asked what was going on and they said to us in pidgeon Japanese "no wowies souf (not quite Japanese but that is what it sounded like)". We explained we were going south (or souf, ha ha) - "ah so" they said "no go souf, bad". We showed them on the map we were going to Kagoshimo - "oh bad, bad" laughing at us. We decided to get up early and go to the information before we set off south to Kagoshimo, the lady there said everything ok - so ... read more

Well today started off well. Went into the bathroom and started brushing my teeth, with yes you guessed it Savlon. I screamed from the bathroom as soon as I realised I had done it (Savlon does not taste like colgate, I can tell you!). Anyway after washing my mouth out a million times I decided to use toothpaste - good call or what. Then we get a train to the ferry terminal to go over to Miyajima. Miyajima is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It has a toril (which is a shrine which floats on the waves when the high tide is in - told you I am getting so educated it is unbelievable!) and is one of the most photographed sites in Japan. Anyway on the ferry as we can see the toril from the ... read more

After a good night sleep in a really small room - and I mean small. We decided to go to see the A-Bomb Dome which is a stark reminder of the destruction that happened in Hiroshima. The bomb exploded 600 mtrs above the ground and 160 mtrs south east of the dome. The bomb caused total distruction 2 kilometres from the centre and around 140,000 of the 350,000 inhabitents had died by the end of 1945 (the bomb went off 8.15am on the 6th August 1945). I have added a picture so you can see what is left standing. Everyone inside was killed but this part of the building survived. We also went to the Peace Memoria Park where there is a children's peace monument which was inspired by a little girl named Sadako Sasaki. She ... read more

Well first thing whilst still in Nara we went on a guided tour of of Todai-ji which is the Great Buddha hall. It is an amazing sight the Buddha is the beggist in Japan and it is supposed to be one of the greatest sights in the entire Japanese history. Our guide was 74 years old and his English name was "OK" he was a really nice man and had studied many years ago at Cambridge University. We are getting really embarassed about how well a lot of the Japanese speak English and our Japanese is crap/non-existent. I must admit I kept my eye on Mike, especially after last night with him reading about Buddhism. I kept on expecting him to go missing and then turn up in a trainee Monks robe - thank goodness that ... read more
