A nice quiet night in a bed, in a building! Even though we were in a motel and not a shelter the internal clock went off by 5:30AM. We had packed most of our gear last night so little needed to get done. Final showers and shave, breakfast of oatmeal then off to the trail. We made a stop at the post office to mail out a map no longer needed and the card for our camera. 8:30 and standing by the road with our thumb out trying not to walk the two miles uphill to the trail. Ten minutes went [View Full Entry]

What a crew at the shelter last night, 10 tents in all. One family group was a bit loud until about 8:30. The scouts were quiet until morning. We slept soundly except when a branch or small tree broke somewhere in the forest waking us both up. The scouts banged a big pot about 6AM rousing the entire area. We tumbled out of the tent by 6:30. All was well with where I had hung our food, it was unmolested. Breakfast was made while we watched everyone pack up and head for the road and home. Before we had finished [View Full Entry]

The rain made it to the tent about midnight and the fly was damp the rest of the night. A couple more hikers came into the shelter after we had retired. We crawled out of the tent about 6:15 this morning. The rain had stopped earlier but the trees held more water than a wet duck dog. Making breakfast I was talking with the new hikers. Turns out that one of them was the son of a co-worker of our son-in-law in Rochester, NY. Both of us knew about the other and had been on the lookout hoping not to [View Full Entry]

What a place to stay! We started to roll out of our bunks about 6AM. I went up stairs to find Bill working on breakfast with fresh coffee ready. More good conversation and food to match. By the time Dick finished picking people up last night there were five of us at his home for the night. All five were at the breakfast table for omelets. There is a third guy who helps the Mayor, Butch. Yesterday while I was showering he took CC to Glenfield, NJ to pick up our next food resupply. This saved us having to do a [View Full Entry]

Wind rustled through the trees all night singing quietly in our dreams. No rain fell on our tent only small things dropping off the trees now and again. Temps stayed near 60 degrees so sleeping was comfortable. The two guys in the shelter started to stir about 5:30AM. We rolled out at 6:30. Breakfast was done, tent packed up and we were on the trail by 8:30. The trail for the first four miles was our last in NJ. Crossing into NY the rocks returned, but these weren't the PA variety. They were spiny backbone ridges that required some climbing skills. [View Full Entry]

We were waken by a commotion about 3:30AM. Seemed one of the guys woke up and saw Violet getting up to answer the call of nature. Her headlamp inside her tent appeared to be in the wrong place he thought. He woke up the other guy to see what he believed the out of place lights moving through the woods was. He laughed and told him who it was and to go back to sleep. Rain continued all night long stopping sometime after 3:30. We were all up by 6:30 working on breakfast. One of the more humorous events of the [View Full Entry]

Rest is over; time to hit the trail again. Up by 6:30AM and having some fresh fruit for breakfast. The two guys who said they were going to be out early were still in the bag when I went into the hostel. So much for the early risers. Seems when the young guys hit town, no one gets up early the next day. The other two guys are zeroing today, so I didn't expect to see them up this early. We had everything ready to go by 8:15. The sky is fairly clear, a light breeze blowing, and the temp in [View Full Entry]

Peaceful night of rest at the hostel. The one other guest staked out the sofa for his bed so CC and I had the bunkroom to ourselves. We spent the day lounging around, doing laundry and eating. We received some Trail Magic, a free ride to the laundromat. We had to get a cab back. Three guys who had passed us earlier came into the hostel for a break. They had all taken zero days elsewhere and we had passed them. I had a small rip in my long pants and I had tried to repair them. I got one [View Full Entry]

Not a bad night in the shelter. The temp only dropped to the high 50s and my bag worked ok. We were up by 6AM and on the trail by 7AM. No oatmeal to cook just bars and crackers. The last miles to town were almost the best we've done in PA. The trail wasn't all rocky and went through some very beautiful gullies with rhodie thickets streams and a real nice waterfall. The weather was clear and by the time we hit the bottom of the mountain it was in the mid 60s. We arrived at the hostel and the [View Full Entry]

Not a bad night, temp only dropped to 50 degrees. CC and I snuggled when I got cold so all was good. We got up and out of camp by 8AM. The day was warming quickly and soon we were both sheding layers. The main story today is the rocks again. They beat us for the past two weeks and they beat us up again today! We saw some wildlife, three deer and an Eastern Box Turtle. Most of the day was a green blur, head down trying not to break something. This is the last shelter before we hit town. [View Full Entry]
