Washington DC Flying in to DC was exciting!! All the monuments could clearly be seen from the air before we landed and I was full of anticipation! We took a cab to our accommodation - a two bedroom house in a charming street in central DC. That afternoon / evening all we had time for was a supermarket trip to fill the pantry and dinner in a little Italian restaurant down the road. We had flown from mountain time to eastern standard time so the difference was 3 hours - I didn’t mind though after a full-on time at Rocky Point 9pm really felt like 9pm (rather than 6pm)!!! The next day kicked off what would be 4 exhausting days of pavement pounding, I seriously thought that my feet would never recover as I struggled with ... read more

Oh Mex-i-co! We were very excited about this trip to Rocky Point with a huge group of friends! Nick and I (along with Lucas and Amy obviously) were on the road by 8.30am. It took us 3-4 hours to make it south of the border, were we were waived into Mexico without even a glance at our passports!! A real contrast to the high tec American border control just meters away. As soon as you drive over the border you notice the difference, obviously not a lot of money there! The most amusing thing was undoubtably the road signs in Mexico on the way to rocky point. There was sign after sign warning you to watch out for different animals. After a while we were wondering if it was a joke of some sort - really ... read more

Lake Powell & Glen Canyon Dam Once we had made the decision to head for home, it was all go! All of a sudden we had to have everything arranged for the rest of the trip in just a couple of weeks. We were glued to our computer screens in the computer room for hours on end trying to arrange accommodation and flights. The SUV and trailer sold quickly (which was a relief)! We sold our trailer on ebay to a guy in Colorado and as part of the deal we had to meet him ½ way in Tuba City (Northern AZ). This meant we were on the road again! We took the opportunity to see a couple of things we had missed as we came down south to Phoenix the first time. After a sad ... read more

Sedona Sky Harbor Airport is HUGE, as we found out on the Thursday night when we went to collect Lyn and Jeremy!! Eventually we found the right place to meet them and were greeted with hugs and gifts of NZ food!!! (Cant survive for long without the vogals and light ‘n’ tasty!) The Arizona monsoon season did its thing with a small electrical storm as we drove North. After a 2 hour drive we were in Sedona. We had chosen to stay here rather than Phoenix as Sedona is far prettier (it is known as one of the prettiest spots in the state). A couple of months back we had driven through Sedona on our way into Phoenix but couldnt stay and look around as there was no where to park with the trailer! So we ... read more

Phoenix - again? Hey ya'll!!! After a great delay here comes the begining of Part 2 of Nick and Mel's most excellent adventure! A big hello to all our Phoenix friends who are joining the blog - we miss you guys! From Tucson we headed back to Phoenix and the scorching summer heat! When we cruised in the heat was oppressive and we found most of the RV parks were 55+ and didnt want young hell-raisers like us!! Needless to say we were feeling a little dehydrated and rather despondent when we rolled into Orangewood Shadows RV Park (another 55+ park). Nick asked if we could possibly set up camp for a couple of days, Nancy at reception was suitably charmed by him and let us stay - just for a couple of nights though. The ... read more

We went to Biosphere 2 just a little way out of Tucson. Many of you will remember this failed science experiment from the 1990s, where 8 people were housed in a huge structure completely cut off from earth. The goal was to make them completely self sufficient inside a ‘biosphere’ that mimicked earth (for example they had their own ‘ocean’ and ‘desert’). It was to be a step closer to life in space. To cut a long scientific story short the project failed - twice, it has been a research centre and is now a tourist spot. It was fascinating to hear about all the work that went into it. While in Tucson we also went to a little Mexican restaurant called Mi Nidito which President Clinton had visited. They proudly displayed photos of him and ... read more

Phoenix With the traffic delay and hungry tummies we decided to set up camp in a trailer park just outside of Phoenix. Thankfully this one had a pool as even well into the evening it was still 38oC! The next day we drove into Phoenix and once again made sure we picked a campground with a big pool! We went out to see the Arizona Science Centre but got a bit lost with the major roadworks and detours in place. We realized that we had parked a long way away from the centre and just couldn’t bring ourselves to take the hike (it was way to hot). There was no one else out on the footpath so we decided to find another activity whereby we could hide inside in the air conditioning as the locals were ... read more

Grand Canyon From Tuba it was on to the Grand Canyon! As we drove into the canyon there were heaps of scenic points to stop and look. It was 28oC (at 11am) but got much much hotter as the day wore on. One of the first gift shops we came across had a brick tower next to it. You could walk up the narrow winding staircase (about 4-5 stories) and get a great view out over the canyon. The whole interior was covered in Native American artwork walls and ceiling. We found our campsite and hid away from the sun for a while, later we ventured out to see the visitors centre and a couple more gift shops (that sold every type of souviner you can imagine!). We had planned to go to a Star Watch ... read more

Four Corners & Monument Valley I was quite excited about this next destination as we were heading further into the desert! On the way we stopped at 4 Corners USA. This is the only place in the US where 4 states meet. The land is on an Indian Reservation and they have set it up as a tourist spot. It was quite an interesting place, the actual point where the 4 states meet had a concrete monument where we had our photos taken. All around the square monument are rickety old stalls where the American Indians sell jewelry, pottery, arrows and other bits and bobs. They also had a couple of food stalls selling Indian frybread, which as the name suggests is a bread-like dough which has been fried. Eager to try a bit of culture ... read more

Colorado to Arizona Silverton was our next stop, but on the way we drove past the Red Mountains, the sight of a booming mining region in days gone by. Our photos do not do it justice, the rock was a far more intence red, a beautiful contrast to the white snow. Silverton was another beautiful little town with the smallest church I had ever seen! We drove down the main street and had a look but didn't stay long. Then we drove on to Durrango where we stopped for lunch. We drove from there on to Mesa Verde National Park. At Mesa Verde we saw amazing Native American Indian ruins. The most spectacular being the Cliff Palace where the native people set up a series of buildings on a ledge within the canyon. (After all a ... read more
