We had been concerned about how to get a slow boat down the river. The Thais said boats went from their side, we should be there at 8.00 the next morning and pay them the £4 to go down the river including getting a Laos visa. All untrue! The guidebooks are not clear and when you arrive at the river on the Thai side there are many fellow travellers hanging round, confused and asking each other do they know what to do. We can be definitive on the way by boat Houayxai to Louang Prabang: The slow boats go only from the Laos side. It may be difficult to travel if you do not buy your tickets the day before. Do not expect to be able to book a seat, as the agents tell you, when ... read more

Welcome Back To Thailand

It is 12 years since we have been to Thailand and maybe we have a rosy coloured view of how nice it and its people are. We taxied to a stop in our beautiful and massive Airbus A380 and the man driving the catering truck raised it to our level. He saw us both through the window and gave out a beaming smile and waved. Welcome back to Thailand. Ninety minutes to clear Immigration and we were soon on our short flight to Chiang Mai. Our hotel was fantastic and only £28 per night. We were soon out having a snack and cheap beer with friendly Thais. Chiang Mai itself does not have much to commend it, no fabulous temples or like, however, it has some charm and we enjoyed it. The main reason for being ... read more

We arrived in Dubai at 1-00am but our taxi driver could not find our hotel and we had to drive around a bit until we were welcomed at about 2.00am. Next morning we went for a walk round and found that although Dubai was very modern it is more like India than an Arab country; indeed Arabs are hard to see amongst all the Asians that do the work. 90% of the people on the street are Asian and also 90% of the people on the street are men, this may reflect their views on women. Terry had been ill for two weeks before we left and Michelle was further worried about him in Dubai as he had started to tip taxi drivers! However, he fell short of tipping restaurant waiters so she felt better over ... read more

MISTAKES We should have gone at a different time of the year when we could have missed much of the rainy season. Ten days on New Zealand South Island was not enough. Thirty five days in Fiji was too long. HIGHLIGHTS Inevitably we will be asked what was the highlight of our trip. Well, they were: Hong Kong - Hot, humid, dirty, loud, but we loved it. Australia - Best beaches and the people we stayed with. New Zealand - South Island knocked us out. Seeing Milford Sound and the helicopter ride over the glaciers we will remember all our lives. Fiji - Best snorkelling we have ever seen and the friendliest people we have ever met. Cook Islands - Just absolute paradise when it is not raining. So the highlight was New Ze - No ... read more

Our first shock on arrival in Los Angeles was changing money, as the exchange rate was $1.21 to the pound, far less than when we were here last and far less then we had budgeted for. We only had two days in Los Angeles but luckily we spent it wisely. We arranged a full day sightseeing bus tour which took us round all the sights and we had them described by an excellent tour guide who entertained us with his comments as only Americans can do. We moved on to Las Vegas which has grown immensely since Terry was last here in 1984. Apparently, the population has been doubling every 3 years, it is now a city. We had booked into Circus Circus and from our room on the 23rd floor we had a panoramic view ... read more

Reflections on Rarotonga

Rarotonga is probably the most idyllic place we have ever been. The whole island, except the north, has a continuous glorious beach and beautiful lagoon. The lagoon is great for swimming, although snorkelling was a disappointment. Much of the coral is dead and ,therefore, there is not the amount, nor variation, of fish that can be seen on other islands. The best snorkelling we found was on the south coast by the Fruits of Rarotonga cafe. Rarotonga is without the litter and general poverty seen on many tropical islands - no hassle and no beggars. Grass verges are cut and gardens maintained. Accommodation is reasonably priced and similar to Fiji mainland, however, the food, taxis and eating out are more expensive. The island is served by a 20 mile road around the perimeter and an hourly ... read more

Since our last blog regarding the Cross Island Trek, two Americans have been lost whilst doing the crossing. A 30 strong mountain rescue team were called out and the Americans were found huddled together at 8.00 am the next day. Next door to us we have had a Czeckoslovak couple, Jerry and Daniela. Jerry is a civil engineer and Daniela an aneesth aneasph - a doctor who puts you to sleep. They have lived in California for about 8 years. They are both always happy and Jerry always loud. Last Sunday they decided to renew their marriage vows at a local church and got dressed up for the occasion. We did not attend the ceremony but shared in a celebratory bottle of Spumanti with them later. They are a lovely couple and we were sad to ... read more

Wednesday was very hot and we went looking for a good place to snorkel. We stopped for a while at one beach, then drove around and into town for some shopping. Terry, who considers himself a world expert on putting sunscreen on had forgotten his lips and the bottom of his nose. The result was that he had blisters all over and he had trouble eating and drinking. Next morning the weather was cloudy so we decided to walk the Cross Island Track. It said in Lonely Planet that it was 'hard but possible' without a guide. It takes over 4 hours and ends at a waterfall 1 km from the sea. We set off from the north side with lots of water, cereal bars, mosquito repellent and, of course, paracetamol (for Terry's knees). After about ... read more

Happy New Year to everyone. We are sorry if anyone sent us a text, but the Cook Islands does not have ANY mobile coverage for modern mobiles. At Auckland airport we bit the bullet and paid 100 pounds for a small Nikon camera. We decided that in the whole scheme of things 100 pounds was not a large amount and we should have better photos, even under water ones. We came through customs in Rarotonga at 3.00 am Wednesday morning, strange, as we left Auckland Wednesday night!!! We were met by our taxi driver who put garlands of white hibiscus flowers around our necks. A 20 mins drive brought us to our bungalow at Muri Lagoon. We were amazed, a lovely bungalow with full kitchen, dining room, bathroom and bedroom, all relatively new. In it was ... read more

Foughts on Fiji

We enjoyed and will never forget Fiji. The locals were so friendly and this appeared to rub of on our fellow travellers who were by far the friendliest we have met and we found many who we now call friends. On the Yasawa Islands there were beautiful beaches, super snorkling and fab food. However we were there too long. All the resorts include compulsary food packages (anyway there are no shops), so we paid the same as people (like our sort of friend David) who eat double what we do.! Also we were obliged to pay the resort's prices for drinks. We stayed on 3 Yasawa Islands, the cheapest cost 70 pounds per night and the much hyped Octopus Resort a resounding 162 pounds per night! When you multiply that by the 25 days we were ... read more
