K - 5.30am on Saturday October 16th saw Mark and I bleary eyed in at taxi heading for Dakshinkali, a shrine dedicated to the Hindu God Kali who many Nepalese Hindus worship through animal sacrifice. The ceremonies start at about 5am and when we arrived at about 6.15am there must have been over a thousand people queuing with their offerings – coconuts and marigold garlands in many cases but also a large number with chickens or goats. Although the atmosphere was thick with incense, in many ways the scene resembled a line at the supermarket rather than a temple. The 2 or 3 queues wound down a gorge to a tiled area with several small alters. There were 2 men there – one dealing with the coconuts and the other dispatching the chickens and goats. K - We are now in Kathmandu, Nepal and experiencing the usual cultural onslaught that is Asia - noise, traffic, dirt and smells coupled with vibrant colour, beauty and frenetic energy. We are staying in touristy Thamel - chockablock with shops selling fake North Face mountaineering gear, DVDs and other tourist "essentials" but it's very convenient and makes a good base camp. You see - here 3 days and I am using trekking terms already! Although wandering around the streets, people watching and snacking on momos and samosas is almost adventure enough we have forced ourselves to venture slightly further afield. On our first day we hired a taxi for the afternoon and headed off to a couple of temples. Pashupatinath is Nepal's holiest Hindu site (80% of Nepalese people are Hindu) but unfortunately despite the ... read more

K- 8 weeks on and we are back in Stellenbosch celebrating our seven year wedding anniversary..... and no - sorry, I have no tips about avoiding the 7 year itch except that upping sticks and traveling around the world doesn't seem to be doing any harm (or at least keep him/me in sight most of the time!) We loved it so much here that we have come back for a couple of nights (with a rented car!) and are treating ourselves to several gourmet lunches at various vineyards. Today's extravaganza was at Jordan Vineyards - stunning views, and rabbit ravioli with broad bean and asparagus (me), mussels en papillote (Mark); pork with baby beets etc etc (Mark); artichokes with barley, sunflower, smoked artichoke heart etc (me); fabulous Jordan sauvignon blanc and "The Prospector" 2008.................and for dinner- ... read more

K - This week we had our first unplanned travel adventure when, on our way to Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast our car broke down on a very remote stretch of untarred road. Basically a U bracket sheared off and our rear suspension fell off! Mmm…we had a spare tyre and loads of tools but spare suspension brackets – nope, we were all out of those! Apart from the fact that we were still 20K from our destination this was not an area where we would wish to leave the truck unattended and also not an area where we wanted to spend the night. It was also a road where, in the following 4 hours, we had a mere 8 vehicle pass us. Fortunately we had cell phone coverage and after a frustrating hour we ... read more

K - Some time ago I alluded to my newly formed elephant phobia. This is one of the causes.....this photo is not zoomed. We had just engaged in a Mexican stand-off with this large Bull elephant from about 3 meters. You do not reverse away from an elephant that close (well, you don't do it twice!) and because 3 other cars had already blocked the road in front we were unable to move past it. Instead we were locked eyeball to eyeball waiting for one of us to do something. Finally I guess the elephant blinked first - moving towards us before neatly sidestepping us and walking sedately through an improbably small gap millimeters from our wing mirror. This was our second close encounter in Etosha (Namibia) and is about the last time I saw an ... read more

K - We have just spent a great week “killing time” as we wait for our Indian visas which we applied for in Durban last Monday. We were told they would take 5 to 7 working days so we headed off to the Drakensberg – a mountain region in South Africa. Absolutely stunning – yet again the photos don’t do it justice (have I taken any photos that do anything justice I wonder?!). We energetically did a couple of hikes in the beautiful mountains and treated ourselves to a lovely B&B on a farm where we were upgraded to a cottage. This was fortuitous as there was a big electrical storm that night and the tent would definitely not have been fun. As usual we managed to adopt a couple of stray animals – in addition ... read more

K - It is 4 weeks and over 8,000KM since my last blog as Namibia and Botswana are not the easiest places to get connected - at least not when camping. It has been a great few weeks and we have really enjoyed the long drives through beautiful, remote countryside and our camping adventure. We quickly got in to the rhythm of setting up camp and cooking al fresco and disasters have been few - OK, so we flooded a campsite on our second night with a 10 foot water spout but hey, they should put the water pipes lower than a tent peg depth right?! The campsites we have stayed at have all been amazing - whether in size and facilities (posher bathrooms than we have at home!) to basic sites in beautiful, isolated locations ... read more

M – Swaziland is one of those exotic place names I can remember from my childhood. Perhaps I heard it on the news or maybe I saw it on a map but I suspect it is more likely that I saw it on a stamp - yes I did collect stamps as a kid! We needed to get to Durban from the Kruger to visit the Indian Consul and cutting through Swaziland is the quickest route. Swaziland is an odd place. Both it and Lesotho sit like islands within the North East of South Africa. Due to the need to deposit our passports at the Indian Consul in Durban for a week to get our Indian Visas we couldn’t actually go to Lesotho but I wasn’t going to miss out on Swaziland! Swaziland is a small ... read more

M – There have been times on this trip when we have felt like we were either submerged in an episode of the Discovery Channel or, for those Brits reading this, sitting in the truck with Sir David Attenborough filming one of his many documentaries. The short series of photos that follows was taken from the car when a troop of Baboons blocked our path. It started when Kate happened glance down from the passenger seat and began laughing at the lack of endowment of the fellow in the first shot (see the photo to the right). The rest of the photos took less than a minute, the only missing shot was of the female offering herself to the male. My favourite of the group though is the two differing expressions on the male and female ... read more
