K - Whilst in Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon) we visited the War Remnants Museum covering the American War. It consists mainly of photographs including many by journalists killed during the war. There is also a very moving section highlighting the ongoing effects of Agent Orange and other chemicals used during the conflict - a second generation of children still being born with severe disabilities. It is thought provoking and highly recommended if you are ever in Saigon. Although HCMC is a nice enough City we decided to spend our last couple of nights in Vietnam in the Mekong Delta. The Delta is a popular tourist trip from HCMC but in order to make life harder we elected to travel on our own. After all nothing beats spending a day a little confused and nervous as ... read more

M – Next stop Hoi An. I thought Hoi An was an odd place. At first I really wasn’t sure about it. It is has a lot of tourists and is quite twee. I was really expecting to want to leave after a night but it grew on me. Rather like Antigua (Guatemala) you have the western tourist necessities on offer but it is pretty easy to wander off the track just a little and before you know it be amongst the locals. Hoi An is 4km from the coast and on the river. Virtually every other shop in Hoi An is a tailors or shoemakers. Whatever you want to wear they can make it. Turn up with a few photos of your favorite item of clothing or a designer dress/shirt and they will produce a ... read more

K- A rare mistake by our usually infallible head researcher led us to take an overnight train to Dong Hoi in order to tour the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) in central Vietnam. On arriving at 8am we discovered that a trip to the DMZ was going to be impractical but fortunately our infallible researcher had a back up plan and by 9am we were in a taxi heading to Phong Nha Cave - a UNESCO World Heritage site that no-one appears to have heard of. Or at least no-one we have so far met on our travels here. On arrival we met Tony, an Aussie who was trying to make sense of the rather un-user friendly price board. It was in English but may as well have been in Vietnamese. After some help by our taxi driver ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi February 9th 2012

M - We arrived in Hanoi in the North which according to Kate is a bit of a foodies city. Well this was her excuse for spending several hours our last day in Bangkok on the internet researching Hanoi’s local specialties and looking for restaurants! I wasn’t exactly complaining as I am always the beneficiary of her research in this area. Let the eating begin! We checked into our hotel then first stop we had to, and I mean we really had to, have Bun Cha! Bun Cha are like little pork burgers. Kate had found a place on-line that was well known for them but we asked our hotel reception if there was anywhere closer. They send us off down a little side street to a cramped little locals place with diners spilling out onto ... read more

Asia » Burma » Eastern Burma » Kalaw February 3rd 2012

K - We traveled from Bagan to Kalaw on the worst bus of our trip to date. We are used to uncomfortable chicken busses but they are usually cheap. This bus had cost us $14 each and my seat was collapsing (poor guy behind), there was no suspension to speak of and to top it all it left at 4.30am – and we were stuck on it for nearly 10 hours. One of those days when you question the decision to travel on a budget! It was worth it though. Kalaw was the start point for a 3-day trek to Lake Inle and it was fantastic. Our group of 3 French people, a Lithuanian, a Swiss and 3 Brits - all of different ages (21-58) - gelled really well and we had a great laugh. The ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Irrawaddy River January 20th 2012

K- 4.30am saw us on the local ferry from Mandalay to Bagan. Fortunately we got there early enough to secure a couple of plastic chairs by the rail - some tourists had grabbed rather too much of the deck and were reluctant to give it up and the locals were basically spread over the rest. We turned out to have grabbed an excellent spot and the next 12 hours gave us a really good taste of life along the Irrawaddy. A few hours after sailing we watched the local women applying thanakha, the yellow cosmetic/ moisturiser / sunscreen made from a bark. The paste is ground on a portable mortar and flat stone and it was fascinating watching how much care was taken in applying it - a compact mirror being passed along with the stone. ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Mandalay January 18th 2012

Kipling wrote a poem about it, Frank Sinatra and Robbie Williams sang about it and now I’m blogging about it. Somehow I doubt my words will become as well known as theirs but here goes. .. (FYI, Kate thought I didn't know who Kipling was, but as we Brits all know - Mr Kipling bakes exceedingly good cakes!) We arrived in a dark but already active Mandalay at 5am in the morning after an overnight bus journey from Yangon and a tuk-tuk into the city from the bus station. The journey from Yangon was pretty comfortable if a little cold in a deluxe reclining seat with the air conditioning blasting. Fortunately our bus was not decked out in full Barcelona livery like the one we saw at the service station otherwise Kate may have refused to ... read more

M - Last time Kate went gallivanting around the world Myanmar (Burma as it was know under the British) was on the no go list as the west were boycotting them because of their oppressive regime. As such Kate like many others didn’t travel there and this and the boycotts mean that Myanmar has been pretty isolated from the rest of the world for many years. Things look to be changing and no doubt the influx of foreign tourists has already begun increasing significantly. Currently though Myanmar receives a fraction of South East Asia’s tourists. In April Myanmar holds probably its first open elections since Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD party won the last one in 1989. As you may be aware she was promptly put under house arrest after these elections and then the world ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok January 12th 2012

K- Actually six nights but who is counting?! We are loving Bangkok. I will let the photos do the talking for the impressive major sights (Grand Palace, Wat Po etc) but although they are spectacular what we are really enjoying is (as usual) the food. There is food everywhere. Every type of Thai cuisine you have ever heard off plus alot you havent! It is impossible to walk more than about 5 meters down a street without being able to buy a different snack - satay, pad thai, mango & sticky rice, noodle soup, Tom Yam, scorpions, grasshoppers (yep - see photos!) etc etc. Everywhere. For 50 cents to a dollar a piece! We are in heaven and it is fortunate that we are also walking miles each day as the calorie count must be obscene! ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Western Province » Colombo January 6th 2012

K - I am writing this at Colombo airport. We are sad to be leaving Sri Lanka which is a beautiful island - full of variety with beaches, hill country, ancient cities etc. but we are excited to be moving on to Bangkok. We will be spending a few days there while we apply for visas to Myanmar (Burma). We have spent the last few days on the beach at Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa. The former was a little too cramped and touristy for us and had the worst restaurants we have encountered so far in our travels - surreally bad service and average food. The food scene is actually the only area of Sri Lanka that has disappointed us. In general the Sri Lanken people are very friendly and hospitable but they don't really have a ... read more
