M – I really wasn’t expecting that I would be tucking into a Turkey Dinner this Christmas and I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be cooked by my wife! Kate is a great cook but she isn’t a fan of preparing traditional English roast dinners and is always looking for alternatives to turkey to cook for her Christmas lunch. This year she thought she had escaped the task, but little did she know ... The couple who run the guest house we stayed at had recently returned from 14 years in Dubai where they had gotten accustomed to a traditional English Christmas dinner and fancied trying to prepare one themselves in Sri Lanka. They had managed to source a roast turkey from one of the larger local hotels and a Christmas cake from I don’t know ... read more

K- A couple of days ago we spent 2 hours standing on a packed and rickety bus in Sri Lanka. I havent worked my upper arms and core so much since commuting from Wimbledon to Waterloo every morning back in the 1990s! Surprisingly the 2 hours went quite fast. Much like running, the first 20 minutes was a killer but after we got into the flow it was OK. In fact by the end I was doing the odd boogie to the Sri Lankan hip hop blaring from the bus' speakers - not muscle spasming as Mark alleges. We have not been favored with good weather here and we both have colds so it says something for the country that we are still enjoying ourselves alot. Sri Lanka is a predomnantly Buddhist nation and our first ... read more

M - Our 7 weeks in India seems to have gone so quickly. I was told by everyone that I met that had visited India that it is a complete assult on the senses. It was. I was also warned that you either love or hate India. I definately love it, although I can also tell you that there are times when you are glad of somewhere quiet to go and escape the sensory overload of the north. Goa is a little different! As Arnie says, I will be back... My final blog from India has a few photos from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Kerala was fun and I ate the best fish I have ever eaten in Varkala. The tandooried and grilled Grouper, Marlin, Butter Fish and Barracuda were all excellent. Drinking beer from coffee/tea ... read more

K- We have spent the last 10 days in Kerala, South India. Our first stop was Kochi where we took a day trip in to the beautiful backwaters. The experience was so tranquil that nearly everyone on the trip fell asleep! However, as the tranquility is the whole point I guess they didn’t really waste the trip. From Kochi we took a train down to Varkala, a beach resort set on high cliffs. At least it is at present - my memory has proved a little unreliable on this trip, (much to Marks amusement I have forgotten whole towns!) but I was pretty sure the cliff path is alot closer to the edge than it used to be. this was confirmed by some locals - there is a major erosion problem and I am ... read more

M – My first impressions of Goa were a little mixed. We had taken an overnight AC sleeper train from Mumbai to Margao - about two thirds of the way into Goa. We then headed a little further south to avoid the more populated beach resorts frequented by the holiday packages from Europe in central and northern Goa. The positive - the morning view from the train of the rice fields surrounded by palm trees and lush green hills boded well. I was excited, so much so that I decided to stand in/hang out of the open doorway of the train to suck in some of the fresh air. This is something you can’t do on British Rail! After a few minutes I ducked back inside before Kate saw me hanging out the window or I ... read more

K- Having enjoyed a couple of days relaxation by the beautiful lake in Udapiur we left Rajasthan for Mumbai (previously Bombay). Home of the Bollywood industry (and many millionaires) Mumbai is a lot more cosmopolitan that other cities we have visited and is peppered with grand Victorian buildings, designer stores and every luxury car franchise you can imagine. And there are no cows! However, it is also massively overpopulated and home of the Dharavi slums where over a million people live in abject poverty. The contrasts are everywhere. Within yards of our hotel were restaurants where we could spend $300 on a meal and restaurants where we struggled to spend $3. ... read more

K - The last thing we did in Jaipur (the Pink City) before Mum & Don left was go to see a Bollywood film. The choice was basically limited to Ra-One, a big budget blockbuster which is not the typical boy meets girl, loses girl, song / dance, gets girl back Bollywood storyline. Instead it was a sort of Terminator meets Iron Man high budget film with more special effects than you could shake a stick at. However we were pleased that they still managed to squeeze in the obligatory song and dance sequences, comic routines and completely irrelevant fight scenes. It was a riot. The best bit though is the audience - they do not exactly worry about rustling their sweet papers - instead they shout, scream and holler when their favorite stars appear and ... read more

M – It’s a bit of an understatement to say that I have eaten a lot of curry in the last 4 weeks (2 weeks in Nepal and 2 in India) but even I couldn’t manage this pot of Dal on offer in Varanassi, see photo to the right. I was however tempted by a few poppadoms from the street sellers in Jaipur, see the next photo below. All I need now is an enormous Naan Bread from one of the Balti Houses in Birmingham (Mum – I think the Bombay Paradise has the best?). Anyway, curry for breakfast, curry for lunch and then curry for dinner - it’s a tough life but someone’s gotta live it. Suffice to say my weight loss program is totally shot and I have put on all the weight I ... read more

K- My Mum’s trip to India came about because she (foolishly?) said to me in passing one day that she “had always wanted to see the Taj Mahal”. And so last Wednesday she did. Despite the large and amazingly loud crowds the Taj Mahal really does live up to its billing and we all found it to be very special– it is quite simply the most impressive building I have ever seen. Our next destination was Ranthambore National Park – home of 40 plus tigers. And at 7am on Thursday we were on a canter (open sided truck) looking for tigers. Our morning was tiring and not fruitful – although a leopard was spotted at the end of the morning it was too far away to see clearly. The trip over-ran by about 11/2 hours and ... read more

K- We arrived in India about 10 days ago and were immediately joined by my Mum and her partner Don. We are traveling together from Delhi to Jaipur via Varanasi, Khajuraho, Orchha, Agra (Taj Mahal) and Ranthambore (tigers - hopefully). India is a very tough country to travel – a constant onslaught on all the senses - so we are pretty impressed that they are taking on the challenge in their 70s. To make things a bit easier we have hired a driver and pre-booked hotels and I must say that it is very relaxing! However, we also still have the flexibility to decide what we want to do and when – unlike the big tour bus trips. I was in India back in 2003 and Delhi is still as chaotic, noisy, dirty and crowded as ... read more
