I'm setting off on the 18th Feb on a round the world trip for a year. I am going to use this blog to keep everyone at home updated with where I am and what I have been up to.

South America November 12th 2010

The journey from El Chalten to El Bolsen on the famous route 40 would take 2 days with 2 drives of 12 hours and an over night stay. I had not heard that much about the route but Thijs told me the landscape was pretty rugged and definitely worth the effort. We set off on our basic bus at least compared to the luxury we had got used to in Argentina. The road was all dirt or gravel which made for one bumpy and dusty ride but the scenery was very interesting at least in terms of how different it was with barren flatlands leading to towering hills and mountains. It was very desolate with very few other vehicles on the road. As a result it was a surprise when we suddenly found a house in ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales November 4th 2010

The bus from El Calafate was relatively easy until we reached the Argentinian border where for some reason it took the border officer an hour and a half to stamp 30 exit stamps - ridiculous bureaucracy! In contrast the Chilean border despite us having to fill in the immigration forms and have all our bags searched only took 45 minutes go figure. On arriving in Puerto Natales we headed to our hostel called Erratic Rock which was run by an American guy. From the moment we walked in the door the service and friendliness was one of the best I have had anywhere. The owner was really open and chatty and you could tell he was the kind of person that you could talk with for hours without realising the time had passed. Our purpose for ... read more

South America October 29th 2010

My bus ride down from BA was supposed to take 20 hours but we had only made 60kms out of the city when our bus broke down. Thankfully the bus broke down next to a cafe as I was stuck there for 4 hours waiting for a replacement bus. As a result of the delay by the time I arrived at Puerto Madryn I was pretty done with sitting at the bus and was happy to walk along the sea front to my hostel. Puerto Madryn is a tourist town famous for the national parks nearby with various types of wildlife to enjoy. I instantly liked my hostel on arrival it had a very friendly family feel to it with really nice staff, rooms and a communal area. I booked to do a trip to one ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires October 20th 2010

My flight from Auckland landed in Santiago but due to my long stay in New Zealand I had less time than I had planned for South America as a result I decided to cut Chile out and head straight to Argentina. Due to my limited Spanish I was a little worried about my arrival into BA and getting myself to my hostel but in the end like most travel concerns it was easy as I got a bus with a company recommend in my guide which despite taking almost 2 hours dropped me right at the door. I was staying at Millhouse hostel which had been suggested to me by a friend and is reknowed as a party hostel and english speaking haven in the heart of BA. I was lucky as there was a really ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Southland » Queenstown September 18th 2010

We awoke in Wellington after a heavy night all tired and hung over knowing we had the notoriously rough north to south island ferry crossing to look forward to. So with some reluctance we got on the bus and headed to the port. In the end we were lucky as we had a pretty gentle crossing considering some of the horror stories I had heard which was good as we were able to enjoy the views as we left the harbour and catch up on some sleep. On arriving on the south island we headed to the town of Nelson which is the location of the Abel Tasman national park. The hostel we were staying in called Fern Lodge was run by an English guy who had lived in the region for over 35 years and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Central July 23rd 2010

I arrived in New Zealand pretty excited to see the country as I had a lot of good things from people I had met travelling about the amazing scenery and cool things you are able to do. I checked myself into the Nomads hostel in central Auckland not realising this would soon become my home for some time. I had two goals for Auckland book my bus ticket to see New Zealand and get checked out this distortion I had had in my right eye for a few months. The bus ticket was not a problem as I found a great deal on a company called Kiwi Experience which a lot of my friends had raved about. My eye was another matter as I had to see a doctor who charged me $100 just to tell ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands » Yasawa Island July 13th 2010

My journey to Fiji was pretty arduous as I left Darwin at 1am to fly to Brisbane arriving at 5am with a 2 hour stop over before my next flight to Sydney where I had another 3 hour wait for my flight all this meant that I did not arrive in Nadi until 7pm and I was pretty shattered. I had one night on the mainland before I set off to see the Yasawa Islands. I was staying at a nice hostel called Aquarius with very friendly staff and service a good sign for things to come. Fiji is rugby mad so I was able to enjoy my nice dinner and beer whilst watching a highlight from the New Zealand vs Wales game from earlier in the summer - having been starved of rugby for the ... read more

I decided to fly to Darwin as just to show how vast Australia is the bus journey from Cairns to Darwin takes two days. I was pretty excited to go to the national parks here as I was looking forward to seeing another side of Australia which would be very different from what I have seen so far. I arrived at my hostel Cavenaghs in the late afternoon to discover it filled with Aussies here on holiday as Darwin is one of the few large towns/cities in Australia that stays warm all year round. The hostel/hotel was different from all the others I had stayed in before as it had dorms on the bottom floor but the rest of the place was more like a holiday hotel with nice rooms and a pool. However I was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City June 28th 2010

We arrived in Cairns in the evening and it was clear to see that this was a party town as even at 8pm there were people stumbling in the street. We had booked to stay at Gilligan's hostel which titles itself as the 'Ultimate Backpacker Experience.' It was a very nice hostel with everything a traveler could want nice rooms, a pool, big kitchens, loads of computers and of course a great bar/nightclub attached to the hostel. Our first evening in Cairns was the England vs Germany game so we had no time to waste and so after a quick shower we found ourselves prime seats in preparation for the game. By the time the matched started there was a huge selection of Germans standing at the front as against stereotype they had not turned up ... read more

I left Byron Bay on a 3 day slog to get to Frasier Island which took me firstly to Surfers Paradise. This town was a cross between a cheesy European beach resort and a poor mans Las Vegas with horrible looking steak restaurants and seedy nightclubs all over the place. Thankfully we were only there for one night and chose to just get a good night sleep. The next day I headed back to Brisbane for one night where I said my goodbye to my mate John and had an interesting night in a club which as it was ladies night offered girls clothes for all the blokes to wear in order to get cheap drinks which certainly made for an interesting evening. We headed the next day to Noosa Heads which is a picturesque area ... read more
